Its either too hot or too cold. Not sick so far, but then I don't go out in crowds and I have lots of antioxidants. There is always something to complain about.
Walking a mile or two in those moccasins would do all of us a lot of good.
Scattelogical ramblings and desultory humor - SB - cont'd
No offense, Gloria, I forgot you were one of us! I was just chuckling about how warm 60 is to us this time of year - a heat wave!
I used to write and trade with someone from Arkansas and she wouldn't go to her garden if it was less than 50. I guess it's all what we get used to. On the other hand she worked for the months where it was 100 degrees and quite humid and I couldn't dream of gardening in that kind of weather.
I don't think its as cold as it has been in other years in Alabama (down to 12 degrees F) but it has been cold for a longer. Space heaters are just not adapted to prolonged cold. Not complaining -- just an observation. Maybe that's why the Southerners are so grumpy. They are not used to being this cold for so long.
You never get used to it!
The grass is always greener...
I still remember watching my legs turn orange and purple in the winter in Michigan. Don't remember that it was that cold though. Im sure it was. We had a wood stove for heat, still have scars on the back of my legs from sticking to that stove. I remember being outside more than in for the winter. My uncle had a trap line and since he had polio it was my job to check the traps daily -- on skis or snowshoes through the woods. And we tapped the maple trees in spring. there was still snow when the sap started.
WOW. Amost filled up the white space.
Yea, but when you get there its too hot VG! I could never garden in 100°, I hated to go fishing in 90° with all that humidty in Fla. & I was by the ocean! No way, it's nice in December but when Feb rolls along ...Yikes!!
Well its mostly hot and steamy in Alabama. Its either work out some strategies or else.
For me the best way has been to get up early and then go inside by 1030. Its cooler in the evening but Im usually too tired to work after 6 PM.
This year Im trying trellising some vines to make more shade until I can get some trees up.
I agree with WC. I've been in FL in early May and very late October and felt like I was melting and wasn't even gardening.
orange and purple at the same time, or in sequence?
wow - this thread sure has gone to sleep...
Maybe it saw its shadow.
I'm here! (Attendance being called.)
Me, too!
☺!
Update: 70 degrees here today.
I can see a crocus.
And a gazillion cardinals.
lucky you!
They must be looking for food... I give them shelled peanuts. ☺
Wow - 70! You are lucky, Sharon. How long is it supposed to last?
No crocuses here, yet.
It is supposed to last through Wednesday, then down to about 50 again.
Sure does feel good, though....
Oh, the cardinals have tons of food....they are a happy crew!
Sounds nice!
I did spot the tips of daffodils coming through when I was outside working yesterday! It may be a minor thrill but for February 3rd it was fine with me.
That's a major thrill, Pirl, or it would be up here!
On the other hand, warm weather usually means thunder storms this time of year. Those I am not happy with.
Forgot to look at the daffodils, Pirl...going to check right now.
Daffodils up about 6 inches. Yayyyyy, but a friend sent me a picture of her first daffodil bloom of the year this afternoon, so mine don't look so wonderful compared to hers. Could be that she is in Alabama, though.
She also has camellias blooming.
mumble, grumble..
On Photos one of the ladies form England is posting nice crocus blooms. All in good time!
Oh thats lovely! The leaves are so green...im swooning here!
I told y'all what was coming from Alabama, you should have closed your eyes, Pixie......
Beautiful, Gloria! Is that one of those camellias on your property?
(grin) she likes to swoon.
Yes. The tree is about 15 ft high and just covered with buds. It always comes into bloom for Valentines Day. There is another similar red one that blooms for Christmas. The December one is Professor Sargeant.
Not sure what the February one is. Both are anemone form flowers.
In 1939 my place one the local camellia show. Now I only have about 15 left. I plan to plant some more but they prefer a shady location so I have to plant trees first, then camellias.
Wonderful. I consider anemones friends.
(Sharon - but yours will be in bloom after someone else has finished with her daffodil blooms. The rest of us will be patient and happy when they bloom for us.)
Oh, Gloria - very nice camellias! Your home had a big collection of camellias associated with its history, as I recall, right?
I worked at a historic house down the street. I was cleaning out a trunk full of old newspapers one day and found the story in a 1939 issue of the local paper. The historic house has a sweeping circular driveway with camellias planted all along the drive.
Lots of camellias here.
I'm here - but now I have to go. Bye.
I'm here, Victor! Watching Antiques Road Show...........
Gloria - I love your camellias. I am zone pushing with my one camellia......we call her Camilla PB........I am so hopeful she will make it through the heat of summer here. She gets morning sun and then she's in the shade. What do you think???
Good one, Pirl. Let's keep that in mind.
Something we said, AYC??
