Suggestions for me to get a picture like that?

Pensacola, FL(Zone 8b)

Heck I just aim and shoot.........lol

Thanks you Kim they are your seeds..........LOL but i am totally surpised i got 100 percent germination..

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

So far 6 of the 9 white brug seeds have germinated, and it looks like one of the pink ones is emerging as well. What am I going to do if they all germinate (total of 15 brugs!) LOL

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Congrats Seandor, lol, enjoy them. :-)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I think a lot of neighbours will be adopting some of my brugs :-)

Hi everyone I noticed in that last picture that some of the leaves were broader than other narrow ones ...does that mean anything ...ie bigger leaves in the plant?
congrats everyone on all the bubba brugs

To answer a question that was asked earlier. I have opened pods and found a few seeds didn't look as ripe. I always plant them asap, and have had great results. I have also planted seeds just an hour or so after opening a pod, again great results.

If you ever have a pod that snps off or get picked early you can plant and hope they where mature enough to take off.

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

Good to know that. I am hoping to get pods this year. My one and only last year fell off, it was only an inch or so long and hadn't even started to develop the seeds yet.

Okay, I'm getting ready to "cuss & stir" as gammy3 said.... it's been 4 weeks.... nothing. But I do remember a couple of years ago when I started some from a trade that it took "forever"!!! I'm particularly excited about these, however, because they're from one of my own plants.... well, at the end of this week I'm going away for a week ~ so I betcha they'll be up by the time I get back. Simply because I won't be looking at them 5 times a day.... LOL

Good luck. I have one that is finally popping it's head up. That will make 2 seddling I have. More are planted and I check them constantly too.

Am nursing one supposedyl pink brug out of the 15 seeds from a trade I planted. It is in its own pot now. It appeared Feb1wh en I got the seedsthey just said pink brugs (no other identification ) Not only am I plant illiterate but also computer illiterate...Is a NOID an unknown plant?
I am keeping the container with the rest of the seeds in it..just in case the come up some day
The ONE and only seems to be growing quite slowly. I have it on a heat pad under lights

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Gammy!

That's right... a NOID is just a brug that is not named.. they are just as beautiful.

I would ditch the heat mat for brug seeds.. I rotted everything with a seed mat. They need light more than heat.

You are right in keeping the original container too.. they will come up if they haven't rotted.. you can scratch around and see if they are okay.. if they are.. you will get babiez... I've had some seeds come up 6months later! (keep the id tag you have though.. it's easy to get mixed up)

My makeshift greenhouse is kept at 60'ish and my seedlings are doing well. I thought I would share with everyone my experience. Both my "sinkers" and "floaters" germinated without any difficulty. I sowed them on Feb. 4th. Today they are couple inches tall. Yeah!

Well,
Now I know how crazy I can be. I got the containers that I planted the seeds in that have not sprouted - I planted Jan 26th. I dug through, pulled all out that I could find, peeled the cork and planted the seeds. (A couple were starting to sprout, I pulled the cork off and planted them also).
I must be crazy. My family thinks so, watching me dig through the soil in pots on my kitchen table.
Yes, Crazy for brugs.
Marie

After doing it both ways I would peel them in the future ...I peeled my Arboreas and my American bought seeds and they came up within 10 days to a fortnight ...with my own crosses I did not peel and it seems to have taken forever for them to come up ...planted on the 5th of this month (shows 4th to you as we are one day ahead of you they are coming up slowly ...now ... struggling compared to the peeled ones. I must add that it was warmer when I planted the others as our night temps are now dropping and there is little sun. If you have enough seeds it is interesting to see how they go best for your conditions by trying different ways.

I have 25 that I have potted up into 4" peat pots. They are all looking good. I have another couple dozen that have not come up yet.
I was out in my garage looking at seeds that I have saved from last year. I found some brug seeds I had forgotten about. I have them soaking and Friday I will peel and see if there is anything inside. The seeds are Audrey Hepburn x Solid Gold or Rosamund. I hope they will grow for me.
(Scratching my head. What am I going to do with all these Brugs?) ;)

Couldn't wait, just peeled one, looks great.

Put the pots on the roof if you have to Lol ...Yes I have so many I don't know what to do with them all but I will grow them all out ...even if it takes up all 16 acres!
Ask me again next year ...but this year I am new to this and am very excited ...maybe after hundreds of whites then then I may go to plan B. Good luck with your seeds!

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

My little 1/3 acre in zone 6 isn't the right 'fit' for trying to grow brugs, but I will do it anyway. I moved my large brugs out into the garage so I could treat them with a systemic bug killer. I thought I had won the battle over the aphids, but they have won. I stripped all the leaves off and put them out. I hope they make it.
It got up to 48 degrees today, the snow is melting and I have scooped up all the deer poop off the lawn and thrown it on my flower beds. I worked outside for about 6 hours. Loved It.

Would I ever love to have 16 acres. And in Australia, WOW.

Good day to you and goodnight all.

Marie

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You have snow Marie? Lots of my brugs live outside. They do fine down to about 33 for a couple of hours at night but any lower the leaves go first, then the trunk then the roots at about 24 degrees. But the temp does go up to the 40s and 50s during the day. This year I didn't even get 1 frost but I did lose 1 to rot. We have so much rain in the winter.

If anyone has to trouble germinating them in soil, try rockwool. It is the only thing I use now for brugs and clivia seeds. I never soak my seeds even if they are old but do peel them and then then pop them in the wet rockwool and then into a clear plastic bag. Then under lights on my seedling table. It is clean, fast and so easy!

The bag really speeds things up. Makes a mini GH.

OK, showing my stupidity here... what is rockwool? wow! those seedlings sure look healthy!

Tammie

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

well.. I peel some ..and soak ... and peel again if needed.. then they are into a communtiy tray with a plastic cover.. oracovered pot.... I just got a nice source for the trays w/ a clear cover nice and only about $8.00 - $12.00.. but I have to eat the Thai shrimp in Basil noodles first... or their lovely duck salad.. or their... geee....... I bet I have hundreds of them by now.. and the trays also make nice saucers for the 6" pots also....
OK.. these spend as long as they need to in the containers...the sprouting ones are potted on... and the others sit for a month or two.. at which point I take the pots or trays...and empty the contents into a large 2' saucer.. with the plastic name tag with the pile of soil.. and work the clumps around the saucer till it's filled up.. perhaps a bit of colored nylon string around each pile.. so that in another month or two when these relunctant ones do perhaps sprout.. I can identify them.. the large saucer I put underneath a planter ..out of the way and not taking up any real growing space...I'II water and check every few days.. I was suprised with the first bunch... how many I did find sprouting.. after I had really already given up on them.. so be patient... even for the ones slow to get going..and you'l be rewarded with a few bonus ones..

Yes, Kell, I still have spots of snow. It is melting fast though. Your seedlings look great. I have never used rockwool, how do you transplant? Do you separate the rockwool with the seedlings and plant?
I am potting up another dozen seeds today. I was surprised when I got home yesterday to see several of my hardy hibiscus have sprouted (from some seed that I saved last year), also a few of the canna's. I have planted several varieties of seeds and am really just getting started. I am very pleased with the success so far.
We are going to a (small) home and garden show today, I wonder what I will come away with. Finances may stop me from overspending - I just looked at my account today. I am really trying not to go into debt with this hobby.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I hear that, Marie. It does adds up.... but that's why seeds trading/sharing is so wonderful.
Kim

p.s. has anyone among us here sowed dutchman's pipe seeds successfully in the past. Care to give me some tips please.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Marie! I love garden shows. we are having a huge one here in a couple of weeks and I plan on being flat broke as I leave it. LOL

I had poor brug seed germination in soil but great in rockwool so I switched. Also with clivia seeds, they rot easily but in rockwool no rotting. Friends into clivia use all sorts of antifungicides on the seeds but I rather not have them in the house. You can buy rockwool in sheets at hydroponic stores.

Here are so healthy clivia roots in rockwool.

When the seedling gets big enough I take it out of the bag and peel off any extra rockwool.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

OBTW, once I bag the seeds I never open that bag until it is time to take them out for good. That way you lessen your chances of a fungus spore or some other dastardly thing floating in and contaminating your growing medium.

I then plant in a 16 oz red plastic cup in soil. And off they go.

Isn't this cute? Look at the fine netting of roots.

Gee ...wonderful pictures ...that last one is amazing!

Very impressive Kell! My seeds have been sitting now for nearly 60 days, with no activity.... sigh. I do have a few from this cross I haven't started yet. Perhaps when I head to the hydroponic store tomorrow to buy worms for my worm bin I'll pick up some rockwool!! :o)

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I still am not sure what rockwool is.. no place here to buy something like that I guess... if walmart or home depot don't have it.. then it is not available here. LOL

those are really nice pictures too!

I will have to look for rockwool. Those pictures and plants are fantastic. And the picture quality, well Kell, nothing can beat it.
Thanks,
Marie

Thanks Kell! These pictures are so helpful. I will certainly give this a try.

Guys, my named cultivar cross remain stubborn, and won't germinate? I planted the same time with my fresh seeds. Most of my freshed have, but the crossed cultivars. Should I did them out and peel the corks off. It has been over 3 weeks since I sew them.
Kim

Kim hi! don't worry I think it is just that the cork may be more difficult to break through than the fresh ones ...my named crosses were peeled and came up in 10/12 days ...my fresh ones were not peeled and are just coming up in the last few days ...I will always peel in the future except for the tiny seeded type. Why don't you gently pick one out and have a look ...you could risk one by peeling the cork off ...it won't hurt it if you are gentle even if it has shot a little shoot out ...please don't cuss and stir as someone else said lol ...I thought my fresh seed were no good and did that and was thrilled to see a little shoot coming out ...I put it back and it is ok, I peeled off one or two corks and found fat little seeds starting to sprout ...take a few deep breathes and go for it! ...gently *smiling*

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thanks Chrissy; I beginning to wonder about the named cultivars' offspring. They may do well in a different type of climate than mine? After all, the no named 'cultivars' are those that have been proven to be hardy and perform well in our microclimate (in our particular zone), just a thought.

I'll explore with one or two of the named crosses. Will find out what's going on. Thanks again mate. ☺
