How long will I have to wait till something sprouts?
At what point does one "cuss and stir?"
any advice would be appreciated.
last year I tried with no results...this year I did take the cork off first
(read to do that somewhere....probably while lurking on this forum)
Am really hoping to get one going this year...you all's look so beautiful.
Brugs from seeds?
oh may take a few weeks but after about 2 months i would cuss and stir that is for sure............lol
Welcome to the Brug forum Gammy3!
They won't come up till you stop looking at them! LOL
Nah, just kidding.. but it sure seems to be true. Some seeds will come up in a few days, others a few months..
What kind of conditions are you starting seeds in... ie.. Light, soil, inside? etc. Can you post a picture? That helps a lot..
If you want seeds and brugs.. trust me.. we can make sure that happens here.. LOL
I agree... the germination times varies greatly. Good luck with your seeds! ;-)
Do you have to take the cork off first? If you don't will it take longer to germinate?
Well in mine took 10 days in about mid 60 F temps ...soaked the seed in warm water (as I read here in these forums) and then took to them with a nail clipper ...very very carefully, just nipped a bit at the side and then gently went in with my fingers, soaked them again for a couple of hours in warm (previously boiled water) and planted them in a mix that was almost pure washed river sand. Mine were all arborea so the germination was uniform. Good luck:)

Here's how I do seeds...
I soak them for 12 to 24hrs in water (under the lights for warmth)
(I use 1 Tbs Household Peroxide & 4 to 6 drops Superthrive to a 1/2 gal of distilled water)
I peel the cork off my seeds, cause I'm in a hurry for them to germinate. :) They will still come up if you don't peel.. just takes a little longer, and it's been my experience that it is hard for them to drop the shell when they come up.
I put them in moist Sterilized seed mix (or just regular potting soil I bake in a crock pot to kill fungus gnat eggs) press them in the soil, but do not cover the seed with soil.
Cover the entire thing with either a dome or plastic of some sort for humidity. (I have started plenty with no dome, but then your inviting fungus gnats that will eat seeds)
I have also used a paper towel put the seeds on it.. fold it in 1/2 moisten it with the solution above and put it in a plastic bag under the lights.. then plant the sprouts about a week later..
It's been my experience that Brugs seeds will rot if you use a heat mat, unless they are outside in the cold.
There are several different methods.. do what works for you
Thank you Joyce, I'm printing your instruction out for future referrence. Gammy3, I've several questions regarding brugs' seeds I hope you don't mind that I post them here?
#1. Has anyone planted fresh seeds immediately after harvesting the seedpods - before allowing them to dry out? If so is the germination rate better compared to planting them later?
#2. If we plant them immediately, will that reduce the need of peeling the cord covering off?
It seems everytime I try to peel the cork off it tears the seeds in half, is there an easy way, ya know maybe I'm holding my mouth wrong or something? Out of 10 seeds, 1 didn't split apart. Should I soak longer? Some had nothing in it that I could see, it that normal?
It would be hard to describe in text... but I break off a corner at a time.. I've even used some really dull rounded tweezers to just grasp the outside edge.. and it's NOT easy.. I like to peel mine after they have soaked... Then the "bean" inside is plump and won't come apart so easy.. This is all with dried seeds..
Maybe I just need to soak mine longer in the H2O and H2o2 solution. I'm going to try it tonight.
Thanks so much for your help.
Some seeds are empty Robin... Even after a long soak... Never know!
Also, if I have some that are "stubborn" in getting hydrated.. I will break off a couple of pieces and then leave em to soak a little longer..
When I was at the other house.. I left the cups of water on the stove, there was an area on the stove top that was warmed from the pilot light, but not hot.. the warmth seemed to really plump em up.. Just soaking, not after they are planted..
Maybe I can find a place that would do that, at my other house it would haver been on the stove too, but have an electric range now. oh well. Maybe on top of the fridge would help or over a register.
Do you have lights set up for your seedlings? That is usually warm enough...
Yes I do, That's a good idea. I'll put the bowl there. Thank you.
Yeah, I was feeling like when I tried to peel the cork off I was most likely damaging the seed. So I ended up planting most of the seeds I harvested as "soaked but not peeled". We'll see I guess. I have some more I'm going to plant this weekend. These were pods from my Charles Grimaldi, most likely crossed with Frosty Pink. Maybe a few years from now I can let you know how they look! LOL
Sanna
I run out of patience and just plant them that way too Sanna... they do just fine.
Few years? No way! Hopefully this fall you will be posting pics of your babiez! Congrats on the pods!
Thanks for the encouragement!! I'm getting excited about this spring because a couple of plants I started from seeds a couple of years ago have finally Y'ed! (We're not really very warm here, but I think I finally found a good microclimate.) So ~ yeah, this summer should be the one!
Now for the big question...
How long will it take from seedling to get a flower?
Mickey
I have one that I can think of that bloomed in 7 months... and some that take 2 years. Ya just never know.
If you fertilize enough and provide good growing conditions that's about all you can do. The rest is up to Mother Nature..
If you have several seedlings this month.. My bet is that you will at least have some blooms this fall..
Last year, I purchased some seedlings from fellow DGer around July. Today those babies are showing Y-formations. If it wasn't for the shock of having to move them indoor this winter(growing condition), these babies would have yielded flowers today.
Or would I have got those seedlings earlier in the season (last year), by the end of Oct. They would have yielded some flowers.
This is one of my Versicolor brugs that I nursed from 3-5" seedlings last late July.
Very good looking!
Seeing seedlings like that gives me hope. LOL
Good work.
Tammie
Are you sure that's a seedling and not a cutting?
I'm sorry, but those look like side shoots to me.. Not a Y.
It could be a side shoot, ZZ, it's a seedling, I'm certain though. It's marked.
This was it's first year to bloom, I was quite surprised that it did. The only pod I had on it fell off at the first sign of cold..
Ok, Chrissy, at a glance you've 100 seeds!!! Go girlfriend! Are you going to sow them soon?
Kim
Wow Chrissy, you scored big time on that one. Which brug is it?
Wow congrats chrissy I hope it goes well for you!!
Let's race Chrissy, I'm potting a dozen of Whiskers x Inspiration today. (I've soaked them for couple of hours), then a dozen of White x peach/pink (from last harvest), then maybe a handful of a fresh seedpod same as above that I'll pick of the tree today. Woooohoooo!
Hi James, are you going to break the big news?
Kim
Hey James I see your zone now.
What big news?
Ok, James .....
