Speaking of which, where is Don?

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Yeah. Where IS the poet laureate of our group?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

He'll pop in at the appropriate time, when what we're discussing calls for a rhyme!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

aren't we the clever one! It's catchy isn't it?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hee hee, says me.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Oh my!
Says I!!

Lives near me, a bit to the east
the poet who can tame the beast.
He impresses us all the time
Don can really bust a rhyme.

I feel a song coming on -

"You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free"

Been there ....
Left that

How's everyone spending school vacation this week?

Yesterday (it was 58 degrees - opened windows!) I supervised 15-yr.olds room cleaning - ugh! Dad said it had to be done in one day and, poor dd, she "doesn't know how to do it"!

Actually, I wonder if that's the Asperger's showing through - she can't organize to save her life. So I sat there and told her what to do with each item.

Then I took a "walk about" around the yard . . . in the mud.

It's a stay-at-home week.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You mean 'surviving'! So far, so good. My older guy is taking a painting class each morning. I'll be taking him in a few minutes. Otherwise, just hanging.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

My son is spending the week with his dad at a resort in Va. They're having one-on-one time. I think it's going to be very good for their relationship. I'm just here working. Son comes home Friday. I can't wait. I miss him terribly. What a wonderful person he is.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

There's a school vacation? SCSU was only off yesterday...

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I don't know if it's standard in every state, but in NY, public schools are closed this week for 'President's Day/week'.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Not for college, Amy!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Yeah, you gotta wait for Spring Break!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Well, i'm not really a student anymore, but Eric is overworked beyond belief lately. We're going to a conference in Houston over spring break - i can't wait!

Not a great shot, but this is why I have red-twig dogwood. Looks really nice when there is snow.

Very nice Victor!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I put in a dwarf red twig dogwood last Spring, Arctic Fire. Looking forward to its growing. Your's look nice Victor.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

To paraphrase a line from "Independence Day" .....
'I gotta get me one of those!'

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

I was thinking of using the red twig and yellow twig dogwoods alternating to make a hedge along the side of the first third of driveway across from new shrub border. Do you think that would work? A project for next year definitely, but I have been thinking about what would be a good thing to use that wouldn't look too bad in the winter.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Ohhhhhh ....
wouldn't THAT look gorgeous?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Mixing would look nice but I would not do a 'one red, one yellow' pattern. More reds with spots of singles or groups of three yellows should look nice. Also, if you have the room, I would stagger them front o back instead of all side to side. It looks less artificial. They grow relatively fast so you don't have the same concern about replacing a dead one that you do with other hedge plants.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Oh I like that idea of a color block with a punctuation of the other color. Or maybe three of the red then two of the yellow? Hmmm, I think I have several ways to do this now but I think some form of this is what I will do. I also like the they grow fast part.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Once they are established, you have to thin out about 1/3rd of the older branches each spring since they brown with age. It's the new branches that are the brightest.

Vacation is definitely something to be endured! That's when everyone else flies. so it's when we stay home and watch. DD#2 had a birthday party on Sat night - always a mistake, because half the kids are skiing in the Alps and the other half have the flu.

It's kind of bittersweet for me because we know that (god willing) DD#1 will be in ANOTHER state for college next fall. She's such a pill that it'll be nice to be rid of her, but this is the last time she will be my Minor child. (Sniffle.) Sue, I definitely hear you on the room cleaning thing. "I can't do it myself - you have to help me!" May or may not be Asberger's. I have 2 DDs w/out Asperger's who "can't" clean their rooms.

xx, Carrie

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

My son needs to be "shown" how to clean his room, too, even though he's been "shown" a hundred times... more like he wants help.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I've really been enjoying my red twig this winter. My yellow twig died, but I'd like more of a mass of red.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

heeheehee.
why does that sound so funny to me?!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Because you have a dirty mind! At least he didn't mention any splinters.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Amy, it wasn't funny until your comment!!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i know you will NEVER believe it, but the image that came to my mind was Dave sitting there in his sleeping garden, playing with sticks like a kid..!
Then i thought of what you'd say...
edited to say, "then i thought of what Victor - or Al - would say..."

Don't make fun of my twigs!

Just keep it covered with a fig leaf.
