College Station Spring Roundup-TRADES

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

ceejay - if you still have P. Lily(ies) to be tossed...please save me 1 or 2 pls ma'am! I think I've seen a stand of these growin' on Hwy105 east of Cleveland....(saw them last year) Thanks! Lee

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

CJ, just put me down for everything! lol Just kidding, but I would love a few of the Philippine lily seedlings too.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Will add you all. There is plenty for everyone! I didn't get my seed pods cut off last year. They reseed freely, but if you cut off the seed pods they are no problem. (Let a few fall in the area where you want them.) I really do think they make a beautiful statement in the heat of the summer, with no care required. Shade or sun. Mine are in part sun.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Ceejay, How tall are those lilies? I have some that look like those that are just seedlings. Mine are very fragrant. I snatched seeds in October. They were blooming in August/Sept. They were 5-6' tall.

Maybe you would like some of mine if they are different. I would like some of yours unless they are the same.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

I think they're the same, but mine tend to get about 4 feet tall. It may have something to do with amount of sun, nutrients, other cultural factors... I saved a big bunch of seed too, and gave some to a friend who waited until spring to sow them and she got zilch. I'm wondering if they need to go down in the fall when the plant would have dropped them, 'cause I sure have lots of plants now.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Ceejay, I would like to have a couple of your lillies. I think mine are supposed to be 5-6' tall. Would you like some of mine? I don't have a lot to share, but I can start some more seeds. I have had good luck with some I just started. They won't bloom this year, but they will be ready next year and they are worth the wait to me. You could put mine behind yours and that would give you two heights of pretty blooms. If it turns out to be the same, nothing lost. I do think it would be worth the try though. LMK if you want some of mine.

If anyone else wants some of mine LMK now and I will start some more seeds. They really do love to sprout. I didn't think they would still sprout, so I tried some in a baggie with a wet paper towel and they all sprouted. It was too difficult to get them loose from the paper though, so it is best to start them in your planting medium.

Cj in the PF it says those lilies need full sun. Do you have them in full sun? Most of my lilies get morning sun only because afternoon sun can be too hot even in spring and the flowers don't last long. I'm trying to figure out where I can squeeze them in.:)

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Cj, my lilies came from some that were growing at the edge of the woods along the highway in Woodville. The road was being widened and they were clearing the area. I was able to pull up a couple of the plants in late Aug while they were still in bloom. The seeds matured, but the plants I pulled came out without the bulbs.

These plants had their feet in the shade, but the sun was on them most of the day. Further down the road from where they were blooming on the roadside I saw a yard that was absolutely full of these lilies. They were in every possible condition of sun exposure. It didn't seem to affect their height though. That is why I am thinking our plants may be different. That yard was several acres and had trees shading some plants and some were in full sun.

That house is vacant, so there is no-one to ask about the name of the lilies. All of the ones that were growing by the highway are gone now due to the widening of the road. It seems that highway is one of the hurricane escape routes, thus the reason for widening.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

I have had mine for several years, and they grow anywhere. Sun, shade, it doesn't matter. I had been told they would get to 5 feet , but they never have. Like I said, they reseed freely, so if you don't want little P. lilies everywhere, you need to cut off the pods before they pop open.
The seedlings come up looking like a wide bladed grass, and they quickly form a bulb, blooming in the first year. I cut off the flower stalk after they are through blooming, unless I want seed. They overwinter as an evergreen rosette.

They look just like tall Easter lilies, with a slightly more elongated flower.

I don't agree with all the info in PlantFiles, and I don't agree with this one either.

Thanks, Charlene, but I really don't have any room for more...It has gotten to where if I get another plant, I have to pull something else out, and I have some things I want to try this year. You try it out and let me know if they're the same. :-)

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Do you know or have you seen them growing under pecan trees? I would like to try some of them and the ground under this pecan is almost bare, except for oxalis, a few irises (that I need to dig up), and some narcissus (not spreading)

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

No, I haven't, but I have so many that you can try some and if they don't work, no loss. They're going into the compost bin otherwise. I'll add you to the list.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Cj.:)

Silverfluter - May I please have a Brazilian plume? You gave me one last year and it did great. I saw it just a couple of weeks ago, larger, still looking great. And this weekend it was gone. I think DH got overzealous when he was pulling up weeds and unwanted seedlings from other plants. He doesn't think so but the fact remains, it is gone. Rats!

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Sure Cj. I've got some from last years RU.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

You're not the one who gave them away? Didn't I get mine from you? I don't want to take one if you're just starting out.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

No, no. I did give you one last year. I just had lots of extras that weren't taken and I still have them. Some have even bloomed already. I hope somebody wants all of them this year. They root really easy.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Ceejay, you are right, it is a great coleus. My dad grows it in dappled shade and it gets really big.

Does anyone have any pink obedient plant? I was looking for the one that Patricia gave me last fall, and it looks like the squirrels dug it up. :(

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Well, silver, I'd be glad to take any extras off your hands... :-)

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Good, I'll bring 'em all. I can start more for next year.:)

So how does the round-up work? Everyone just brings something they are looking for a home for in hopes to trade for something they'd like? Do you always announce what you are bringing in this forum?

Sorry, I'm new to the Round-up - is there somewhere on the website I'm missing that already has the directions?

Thanks, Sharon

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

There is a map on the head count thread. Oh BTW welcome to Dave's Garden and we are glad you're coming to the RU! You can bring plants if you have some, but if you don't, that's Ok too. Sometimes people have no plants to share, but we will send you home with some.:)
