Shar- I will have to take you up on your offer. When is the best time of year to visit?

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Hi Wonder, nice to see your post. You are always in our hearts.

Rach, anytime is a good time, but the prettiest time of year is late April through June, then October through mid November. We rarely get snow, but we do get some dark dreary days in January and february. Our leaves start turning in mid October. And summers here are very hot and humid.

However, my daylilies bloom from the first of May through the first week of July, and that is also a lovely time.

But you know, whatever the weather, we would have a great time.

Morning...I'm shivering, turned down the heat last night, must have had a hot flash and this morning it's cooolllddd...

Kitties are scratching at the door and want out, will have to make sure I escape without them getting out otherwise it will be a cold day outside for them..

Meeting Suzanne in Hillsdale - 20 minute drive so must rush off..

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Morning all,

Betty,
What wonderful talent your friends have..interesting to see the slightly different ways of painting the same scene.

Your jackets and vests are great! I especially like the navy with the jean front and back. I cxan see a lot of work went into making them. But what a shame that you don't wear them.

Sharran..how many daylillies do you have? Are they your favorite?

Wonder..waving here..how is your garden growing?

Cat..I am on dial-up here..so could only see a small bit of the video..but got the idea. Rogers cable is coming out this way sometime this year. I can hardly wait.

GG...sorry to hear about your friend's mum having a hard time with her husband's passing. It is understandable.
I have a little story of another way of handling grief.
I have a friend who has an elderly couple that she was very close to. The 89 year old woman of the couple passed away on New year's eve. Since then the husband has taken up smoking and drinking and also just bought a brand new black Cadillac..he is 84 years old..and told my friend he has always wanted a Cadillac..and I guess his wife always said no.

Well have a great day..snowing lightly here.

Pacifica, CA

morning all,

ruby, those were some terrific pictures shes so cute.

cat, i enjoyed that video, where do they get all this energy my two can drive me nuts with all theirs lol

carol awwwww love the snowman i cant wait to get busy on that project lol i know just where it will go to. that quilt is beautiful
yes the drains are good dh thinks when we replaced that whole ladderal pipe 5 years ago we ran cast iron but he is thinking when the plummer tied into he city main he may have not angled it quite enough so dh is trying to plan digging up at the end and putting another cleanout so we can just go to the end of the line that seems to be where it always is.

rachel, lol your bad hope all is well with you and the dogs are good to we had a beautiful day of sun made me want to go dig in the garden hope it stays nice for a while. how is the weather down your way..

jeannine, sorry to hear sending prayers to them how sad.

shar, now that sounds like a fun thing to do a slumber party i dont think it costs much to get out that way mught be a way to finally meet one big party

betty, lol aunt murial omg that was something.. now those quilted vests and jackets were beautiful dont get rid of them to good will there to nice! put them on ebay you would do much better, the mats are just beautiful, you filled 6 closets i though i was bad with 2 now look at all those paints you will never run out nice group you pain with.

laura, nice to hear from you, sounds like your in summer for sure with those temperatures glad you have air conditioning hope all is well with you at work

running late have to go everyone have a terrific day

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

Sharon, I think the fusing is definitely needed because the fabric squares are like 1 1/2" each. Once you get them all the way you like them, you iron them onto the fusable fabric which holds them in place to sew. If you didn't have that, you'd have 200 pieces of fabric flying all over the place. The fusing itself was pretty cheap on eBay and a 1 yard piece is good for two of the wall hangings.

Yes, it would be so cool if we all lived close and we could have a slumber party! I'm still all for heading to Betty's house in the summer for some R&R & crafts! LOL

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi GG..well I hope to go to visit Betty this summer.
It is about a 2 hour drive from where I live...and I hope Betty will come and visit my garden when she has the time.

Hi Liz...glad you liked my snowman..it is all fluffy white stuff today..not packing snow..

I must show you the birds on the railing of the deck..the woodpecker thought the post was a dead tree..
The other bird is a female cardinal..and in the middle is another woodpecker flying to land on the railing..really hard to make out though...wings spread out

Cheers,
Carol

Morning! You all are so busy. I have been in the garden catalogs constantly. Making decisions! It is so hard. But things are slowly coming together. Now will be finding the money to do it all. Guess I'll have to plan for so much each year.

By the pond I decided to go with grasses and some flowers. Will post a picture of the area. DH said it stayed wet all summer. So I have been looking for plants that like wet/moist conditions. I need some cattails. Will have to see if there are any on my BIL's farm.

Between that and work I have just been reading and keeping up.

Betty also loved the difference in the painting of the floormats. How fun.
Did I miss it or weren't they buying another building closer to your home? What happened with that?

Just thought I'd pop in and now I have to get some breakfast because that cup of coffee just wasn't enough!

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

that is just one corner of one bed. I also have some lovely purples and pinks, but didn't want to bore you with too many pictures.

Glenview, IL

Are you kidding? Show us the purples. Pictures of the gardens next best thing.
Oh yeah Ves...Cattails would be wonderful in that space. Did you say it stays full, what about some water lillies?
...Got my Garden design mag, yesterday! It's going to be freezing this weekend so I know what I am doing.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Long way in this morning, accidents/snow and then a stop to the new Second Cup coffee shop..should not have stopped there..OMG the deserts they have....of course we had to purchase some goodies..already ate mine, have thought to keep it for lunch but no/no...

Liz, I was looking for a pattern that I had purchased long ago because I thought it was so pretty, had no babies on the way but thought one day I'd like to make it...so, with Suzanne's daughter having a baby early Sept. I went in search..guess what..found all the Victorian Santa hair that I had ordered..yippee..now I can make a sample..

Vicki..look at that green, and just on the left bottomside, a lovely plant peeking out..love the pond area..you are so lucky to be able to start working on your gardens..we can only dream and browse at your lovelies..I did bring about 10 "Garden Room' books, such lovely outdoor projects..will finish Paul's stained glass and then get into my woodworking room and do a few..yes, it's still in the works..difficulties on the side of the seller..Colin, our lawyer is coming in tomorrow with another offer to send out..so still hoping..as for the floormatts..once they have 7 or 8 coats of finish, you can walk on them for years without ruining them..I always laugh..have several in the house..when people visit you can see them actually trying to step off of them, thinking they'll ruin them..so funny..I made a large 8 x 10 I think it was for my back deck..was sitting out there over the weekend and thought I might paint the same directly on the wood flooring, that way I won't worry about the metal chairs cutting through..

I'll tell you, my Christmas vacation south was just what I needed..I now have spring fever and my mind is working in 100 different areas...I'm full of energy, wanting to take on the world...as for the Sr.'s floormats, what a sense of accomplishment for them..one of the ladies "Lydia" never painted in her life, every painting project she does turns out to be a 'treasure'..imagine finding this talent hidden after about 78 yrs. so anybody out there, it's never to late to find your 'special' niche...honest!

Jeannine, sorry to hear about your friends..my MIL would have celebrated their 65th next month..she's also lost..imagine, you'd hardly remember a day you didn't have your loved one by your side..you would have no feeling of self, always been a couple and most likely a good portion of their friends have passed on..will send prayers... does your machine have the capability of lowering the feed-dogs..if so you just need something to put your material on that is same level as your sewing machine so you can randomly using both hands on the material work a design into material before cutting..it's actually a lot of fun..thought I might do same for the watercolor lap quilt that I have...

As for travelling to 'Betty's' you know I made that offer a month or so again..it's open to all..

When I go through my patterns Liz, I have a beauful pattern depicting a craft room/sewing machine etc. could forward it to you if you'd like..(or anyone else) think there might be a few more as well..do you like paper piecing..have a zillion of those patterns as well..

Dawn, sending you some hugs..just remember we love you!

Carol, we are indeed going to visit..my thoughts were that perhaps you could drive to Toronto and come with me to Frankenmuth to visit with Judy in April..as for my visiting, again, I could probably leave early Sat. morning, visit for part of the day and then head home..you are not far at all..I'm just so excited to see your gardens...wasn't that something about the car thief taking the car with the baby inside..lucky it did not end tragically..love the birdies..did I tell you about the birds I purchased at the Florida flea market..gave almost all of them away but mom said her and/or Aunt Muriel will pick some more up for me..they are in 2 parts..I have a terrarium and put half the body inside and the head portion on the outside (hidden magnets) so it looks like the bird is flying through..too cute..

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Hi seed! I meant the ground stays wet. The pond is about 8 feet deep and last summer when we were dry for 5 weeks it droped about 8-10 inches. When the snow melts that is a natural waterway. there's a culvert that runs under the road DH built on the left of the picture as you are looking at it.

Sharran love pictures more please? I love daylillies and have a few. Will they torate the wet conditions by the pond? I want to get more and am hoping I can plant them down there.

Victoria Harbour, ON

We crossed posted Shar and Judy..Shar, you are not going to tell me are you that those flowers are from "NOW"??? if they are you sure are lucky..if they are from last summer, you are still lucky..what vibrant colors..

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Betty sorry for the mistake. That picture was taken last fall. It is all snow right now and frozen.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Vicki, on your trip to 'Betty's' we have one of the largest lily farms around..and of course mega cattails as well...lol..

Sounds like you are enjoying your day off...

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Betty I should be doing paperwork or sorting. You know. but DG is so much more fun. I call it research! LOL

but I do have to go for a bit and give my eyes a rest. Some days they get tired fast.

I will keep checking in today.

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

OK...more daylilies.....and they are from last summer, nothing except pansies is blooming now. So here you go....

and more

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

this is a good way to get through these gray days of January...look at your last year's gardens....

Thumbnail by Sharran
Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Last one.....maybe..

Thumbnail by Sharran
Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Vicki,
My yard is only wet in the early spring. And that is in the low spot where water pools with the spring rains. I do have tons of daylilies who live there. Daylilies, even the newest hybridized ones have high tolerance levels, they will live most anywhere. However they do need some dry time to prevent root rot, so if the area around the pond is constantly wet, I would say no. But if you go out from your pond maybe 6 feet, and the soil there does have some extended periods of dry time, then yes.

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Here's one of mine.

Thumbnail by ves522
Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Lovely...I do have one similar, but mine has more contrast in the two shades. Yours is a lovely color.

I have some more coming in April, and am looking forward to them because they are more pastel shades. What I have now are those that knock you down with their intense color. Thought it was time to tone it down a little bit.

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Thanks for the info Sharran we cross posted. that is the second year for that one. I had a ton of ditch lillies I dug out and got rid of. So much nicer to have some other colors.

Can hardly wait to see your gardens in the spring!

Victoria Harbour, ON

I bought about 6 lilies late last year..such a beautiful smell..after watching everyones I'll be at the lily farm early this spring..Shar they are just so beautiful..I'm sitting here looking and drooling while going through the pages of all the magazines...

Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Betty, the oriental lilies are not the same as daylilies, and in my climate, they require more care. I only have a few of them, because it gets extremely hot here in the summer for extended periods of time, and they can't take extremes. Daylilies can, so I am not sure what your lily center sells, probably both, but to me there is a difference in their care.

Ves, yes, you are right about the old ditch lilies...I don't have any of them, but I do have a very old triple orange, which is one of the first diversions from the ditch lily, before they started trying for more color varieties. My colors are all jumbled together, but I have seen some that are grown by color, whites here, pinks there, etc.

The very dark ones, often called blacks, will fade if they have sun all day long, so I usually plant them where they get some afternoon shade, and they will stay that intensely dark color.

Anyway, that is probably more than you ever wanted to know, but they sure are fun to have. I start getting excited about the middle of April, because I have one or two that jump at the chance to bloom then and surprise me.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Keep them coming Shar..not sure, know they send all over the world..so imagine yes, they sell both..not sure which ones I purchased..looking forward to seeing how they did over winter...

Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)

Sharran love all the info. I need info to learn! LOL

Betty if they are a bulb they are oriental lillies. A tuber they are daylillies. Right Sharran?

Glenview, IL

Oh How Pretty! The Purple one almost looks black!
I only have orange ones. They are so resilient.

Thumbnail by Seedtosser1
Calvert City, KY(Zone 7a)

Seed, yours are the ones I mentioned when I said I only have one kind of orange.

And Vicki, yes, on the tubular and bulb, you are right.

OK, here are more, but not daylilies, just things that grow well for me and that I like a lot.

Hibiscus....

More daylilies, but different ones, and to the left you can see a clump of spiderwort, to the right you can see a blooming yucca stalk...white.
