stop and visit, talk all you want pt 9

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Either poplar or heart pine would make me happy, Marcy! I love wood floors. We have dark wood floors in our foyer and formal dining room but I think they are laminate wood--nothing like yours or Terry's. (We didn't build this house--found it already built.) Of course, it is very easy to care for but it certainly doesn't give the look of real wood.

It has turned out to be a beautiful day here. The sun is shining and only a slight breeze blowing. I wish there was something I could do outside, but alas there is nothing to be done in the flower beds at this point in time but wait for those bulbs to start peeking their heads up above the ground.

I did get one load of clothes into the washer and then the dryer and now another load in the washer. Guess you can say this is my "wash day". It's a far cry from the way it used to be done--thank goodness!

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

LOL Marilyn! I do two loads EVERY day! I told DH...either we are the dirtiest people around..or the cleanest! I just find that is easiest for me. My SIL waits till it piles up so high she can't see over it...then wonders why it takes her so long...lol!
I see there isn't going to be a garden party. That's too bad.

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

I just found this on the internet. Y'all may have seen it before but it does remind us to count our blessings that we don't have to wash clothes the old-fashioned way!!

Grandma's Washday "Receet"

Years ago, a Kentucky grandmother gave a new bride the following
"receet" for washing clothes. It appears below just as it was
written and, despite the spelling, has a bit of philosophy.

-Bild fire in backyard to heet kettle of rain water.

-Set tubs so smoke won't blow in eyes if wind is pert.

-Shave one hole cake lie soap in bilin water.

-sort things, make three piles. 1 pile white. 1 pile cullord,
1 pile work britches and rags.

-Stir flour in cold water to smooth then thin down with bilin
water to make starch. Rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, then bile. Rub
cullord, don't bile, just rench in starch.

-Spread tee towels on grass.

-Hang old rags on fence.

-Pore rench water in flour beds.

-Scrub porch with hot soapy water.

-Turn tubs upside down.

-Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with side combs, brew cup
of tee, set and rest and rock a spell and count blessings.

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

We cross-posted, Marcy. I didn't see that about the garden party. I take it you are referring to the big gathering in Dave's honor in 2009?

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Yes...I don't know how to post links, or I would. I think it is on Dave's Garden forum.
I can remember my grandma putting her tea towels on the shrubbery to dry!! And wash cloths on the grass to bleach them out. She always put her coffee grounds around her roses too. And took her dish water outside to water plants!

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

I found the link, Marcy.

My SIL, who is Japanese, used to spread her white sheets on the grass to dry. She said there is something in the grass that makes whites dry whiter. I don't know what that would be--it seems that if the sun is shining, it would be the sunshine that makes them whiter--not the grass. You wouldn't want to put your clothes outside to dry if the sun wasn't shining, anyway. I used to hang out all my clothes on the clothesline. I love the way the fresh air made them smell. Of course, that was back in the 60's before pollution got so bad all over the country.

I can understand about putting coffee grounds in your flower beds--I do that now-- but I would think that soapy dishwater would kill your plants. Of course, by the time they got all the dishes washed and rinsed, the water probably wasn't all that soapy.

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Nope...soapy water WON'T kill plants.! When I bring my tropicals inside for the winter, I always pour soapy water on them...on the leaves, and through the soil. It helps bring the bugs out that are hiding in there! It's never hurt one of my plants yet!
And I think it is the chlorophyl in the grass, along with the sun that bleaches things out?
I meant to tell you Marilyn, I really like that thing you got from the internet about wash day! Probably just like it was too!
Yeah..I used to hang all my clothes out too. Gave it up a couple of yrs ago, when I couldn't carry the basket that far anymore. Wish I still could!
Well...I made a big pot of chicken vegetable soup for supper, and now I'm going to go make some bread pudding with my stale cinnamon bread! One way to use it up!

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Well, I am amazed that the soapy water won't kill the plants. Shouldn't surprise me though, because I do make up a spray of insecticidal soap for my roses using Dawn liquid and water. Of course, there is only about one Tablespoon of Dawn to a pint or a quart of water--can't remember which right off hand.

I can remember my mother using a wringer washing machine, Marcy. I was probably at least 9 or 10 before she got her first automatic washer. That was a grand day! My daddy had to bolt that new Bendix washing machine to the floor to keep it from walking across the floor when it was spinning! LOL We still had to hang the clothes outside though. Do you remember those stretcher things they used to put inside blue jeans to keep from having to iron them. They would starch the jeans and then put the stretchers down inside the jeans and hang them on the line to dry. Those jeans were so stiff when they dried that they could stand alone! I don't know how my brother got his legs into those things. LOLOL

Chicken vegetable soup would sound good if we had not finished off our homemade soup yesterday--had enough soup for a few days. My DH likes bread pudding but for some reason, I have never been that fond of it--must be because it doesn't have chocolate in it!! LOL

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Marilyn, you can put chocolate in bread pudding! When my kids were little, I used to put choc. chips in it. They loved it that way. And I just made mine with my stale cinnamon bread, and also used eggnog that I hadn't opened yet! Well..it has eggs, milk, and sugar...so I thought..why not? We will see! I also put dried cranberries in it...craisins. I'll let you know...lol...I like experimenting! If we don't like it..out it goes!
Yes...my mother had a wringer washer when I was young too. I remember her getting her arm caught in it one time too. But they did get the water out of the clothes....and maybe got them cleaner too. She had a doorway from the basement that went right out to her clothesline...so not far to go. It was right behind the house. But I always got the chore of taking down the clothes.
Yes...I remember the stretchers...but don't think my mom ever used them? I don't remember her using them. My brothers just wore theirs wrinkled....LOL!! Heck...they weren't wrinkled for long after they put them on!
Remember ironing???? How I hated that!! LOL! I used to get stuck with that too..being the only girl in the family! Rarely do I iron anything now! Ahhhh..but those were the good old days anyway!
We took Sunday drives after church and dinner. Hardly went anywhere but our grandparent's houses...maybe an aunt or uncle's place once in a while. Didn't run to the store very often either....living in the country. Strange, how times have changed!

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Yep, times have definitely changed. Lots of labor-saving devices today that we didn't have back then that make our housekeeping chores easier but then we didn't have pot-heads and dope addicts and so many teen pregnancies and dead-beat dads and the list goes on and on. You and I had the great privilege of growing up in the best decade of the 20th century, Marcy, IMHO. It was, for me at least, truly the "Happy Days"-type life. I could ride the city bus after school from my junior high to downtown Little Rock and get off a couple of blocks from the Boys Club where I took dancing lessons. Kids were safe out by themselves back then--didn't have to worry about being kidnapped and all the other awful stuff that goes on nowadays. It was a better world in many ways, I truly believe.
You younger girls don't know what you missed. Too bad.

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

My 14 yr. old granddaughter just sent me this. It is beautiful and I want to share it with the rest of you. Celia, I think you'll really like it, too.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

WOW you all have been busy little bees today!
Dr. Mau, I love the wash story, but sure had a heck of a time trying to read it! LOL
I would STILL love to have an old wringer washer cause I just loved using them!
I have a friend that rinses her plants in soapy water to get rid of bugs and to kill other stuff.

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Sorry about the broken wrist, Janis. I imagine it is hard to do anything with it, much less type. Been wondering why we haven't heard from you. Take care!

edited to add: Good morning, everyone! My ISP was down last night which is why I didn't check in before I went to bed.
Marcy, I hope you slept better last night. I did--guess the lack of sleep caught up with me!

Good Morniong Mau and Janis.
Dr. Mau will take good care of you Janice. How in the heck did you break your wrist?

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Good morning to you, Marie. "Doctor Mau" doesn't know much about fractures. I would say "let me kiss it and make it all better" But I don't think that works with broken bones. LOL However, I am a firm believer in Knox Nutra-Joint for good joint and bone health plus it makes your fingernails really strong and they grow fast, too.

It's been raining here and now it is a little on the foggy side. Our high today is supposed to be 60º so we don't have to worry about getting any snow. LOL

I am so ready for Spring. I think I'll post a couple of pictures of my favorite rose. I may have told y'all this before but IMHO, Velvet Toreador would be the perfect rose if it had fragrance, but alas, it does not. Here's a close up:

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Here's another view of Velvet. This is a dark red rose, as you can tell by the picture, and it has very long stems which make it a good rose for cutting and putting into bouquets.

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Now this is Sunsprite--a beautiful yellow rose with an absolutely wonderful fragrance. This is a tree rose but we also have one in the front flower bed that is not a tree rose --you can get them in either variety.

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Well, I just wanted to share something beautiful with you this morning, so I thought the roses were appropriate. Anybody else have pretty flower pics to share with us. Cactus, if you are out there, I know you do, and you, too, Marcy.

Hey, Celia, are you out there? Thinking about you and your family this morning. Check in with us when you have the time. We love you!!

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

I love roses. I have 4 on order for Septmeber delivery!! It will be a long 9 months.
Here is one of my favorites. It is black something or another it too has the fault of no fragrance.

Not a rose but one of my favorite flowers and unusual too.

Ok another favorite.

Good morning everyone!
Janis, so sorry to hear about your wrist! I guess it is in the air. :(
Dr, Mau and Marie, LOVE the flowers!
Celia, please check in with us so we know you are ok! LOTS of hugs! Love ya girlfriend!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Hey all, finally got Brandon an appointment with the surgeon at 10:30 this morning. Hope to have good news later!
HUGS to all!
Tammy

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Gorgeous flower photos, Marie. Tell us what kind of flowers those last two are. Have you tried the plant files to find out the name of your "black something or other" rose? :o)

Here is a photo which my granddaughter took last May. She is something of an amateur photographer. She used my camera to take this and I had no idea I could get a close-up like that.

This is a "Butterly Deep Rose Pentas"

Marie, I forgot to tell you that my box from the other thread is on its way! :)

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

That sounds interesting, Tammy! LOL I meant to tell you to be sure and let us know what the surgeon says about your son's wrist. I have to go to the grocery store so I'll check in later. I'll leave you with one more photo of some pink hydrangeas.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Mau, She wanted to come and still a box of bulbs that I am getting from a friend in another thread, so wanted to 'rub' it in that they are on their way! HE HE HE

Thanks for the flowers, they are so nice to see this time of year!

I will let you all know what they say and I hope it is good news!
Hugs
Tammy

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Yeah just rub it in Tammy. I think you need to send some my way!!
The first picture is Scadoxus Multiflorus
The second is a glad of some sort that came from a mixed bag.

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Good morning all. What beautiful flower pics! Thanks so much to all that posted them.
I am having problems with my puter here. First of all..no sound. I was so afraid it would be dead this morning...but not quite yet. I do think it is on it's way out though.
I will be spending the day , getting my pictures onto cd's here, so I don't lose them.
My son is my computer tech. He has his own business. Builds and sells computers, etc. The problem is...getting him here to see what is going on! He works a full time job as a quality control engineer for a large company...and has his own business on the side...so he is a very busy guy. But he usually takes care of momma pretty well.
Oh well...always something, huh??????
Ok...off here to look at a few more threads...then lunch.
If I am not here for a while, you will know it was the puter! Hope I am wrong!!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Nanny Nanny boo boo to Marie! LOL

Well, we are having surgery on Tuesday sometime, but have to wait on the hospital to get in touch with the details. They took new x-rays and then put on a different type of soft cast. The swelling had decreased quite a bit, but had a lot bruising. I think this one is a bit more comfortable, but the top part is more bulky and it interferes with his muscles! LOL Anyway, that is where we are for now. Hope all are doing well!

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Being a princess are we??? :o)

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Trying to! LOL

(Zone 7a)

Hey, hey, everbody!

Checking in and catching up. Miss you girls desperately!

I've been playing with my camera this morning and afternoon. Got lots of neat pics of SIL's gaden. Nothing in bloom but lots of green.

We took some things to the PO today and mailed stuff home. SIL gave me some Daffy bulbs and other things were what my DB gave me. Other stuff was from dad. We visited the CPA for dad's estate yesterday and are waiting to hear from him. We've split some things from dad's military days. I have his bracelet with his name and Navy ID number. My brother in S. Dakota took the flag. He seemed to need it more tahn the rest of us.

I have one or two things to say about hardwood floors. I LOVE THEM!!! And I hate them because of my feet. They hurt them. We are going to replace the hardwood floors with carpet in the front room and the bedroom. We're going to have the floor redone in the office in a different wood. Cherry, maybe, with a compass medalion in the middle.

I miss all of you and will be back in Utah on Saturday. I probably won't be online between now and then. Scott and I have a few things we want to do together before I go home. So, take care and I love all of you!

I'll take all the hugs because I figured out how to breathe through them!!! LOL I got me a new breathing devise so hug away!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

So glad to hear things are going so well for you girl! And that you and your siblings were able to work through what each of you wanted!!! And now that you have that breathing device I can just hug away as mush as I want to! There isn't enough room on this page for the BIG HUG I am sending you, so just use your imagination!!!! Lots of love headed your way as well! Tammy

howdy hoe..on my moms computer and the keyboard is really different. it's a laptop and it's hooked to a keyboard, but this keyboard is just plain hard to type on.

Marcy!!! What did you do about those floors??? Please be sitting down....when we took up the subfloor in the kitchen, we discovered glued down sheet linoleum. So I got out my heat gun, and little by little, got the linoleum up. Put down who knows when. 20's? 30's? When i got the linoleum up, I discovered all the glue, or mastic, on what I knew to be wood. There was no way for us to rent the homeowner type sander and get that up. So i hired the same company that did our upstairs yesterday and finished up today. The trick is kerosene to soften whatever it is that's on there. In the case of the kitchen, it was the mastic and then paint. It came up beautifully!! Maple floors just like the rest of the downstairs, or the first floor i should say. Upstairs in our daughters bedroom was shellac and the kerosene loosened that. Yesterday they again used kerosene to loosen the paint that's been down since 1896 and you should see the floors. They are gorgeous! So if those floors are still there and i hope that they are, either hire somebody who uses this kerosene trick, or find somebody that will do it. It's amazing how it works.

Janis, sorry about your wrist. is something in the air?

Gosh this keyboard is hard. i keep missing the shift key to capitalize.

Wringer washers? Would you believe my MIL bought a new wringer washer sometime in the 80's? Yes, the 1980's! She wouldn't use anything but, till finally she's now using a regular washer. She had said that the new washer didn't wash clothes like her wringer and she wanted the wringer back.

Mau, soap added into your plants is very healthy for them. Sometimes plants won't take water like they used to, indoor plants, and to get them to take the water, you add a few drops of dish soap and voilà, the plant takes water once again. Or if you buy a new plant for outside and it doesn't take water in that black pot very well, just add a couple drops of dish soap and add water and there you go. A lot of plants that are mail ordered to you, will have instructions to add dish soap to the pot and add water till it runs out the bottom. Be careful of adding those coffee grounds. They make the soil more acidic.

BTW, the floors look so good, it doesn't look like the same room or areas!! I'm pleased beyond belief. And how reasonable the price was. These guys go all over IL. They're gooood!!!☺

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

(waving to everyone)

saw the orthopedic surgeon yesterday (not my regular one, the one the emergency room called to get me into see) and he says my wrist isn't broken. But, I know 3 different people that have had breaks diagnosed in the Emergency room, to be told by this doctor that there was no break, only to find out months later, when the pain was still there, that there was indeed a break, that he missed. So I have an appointment with my regular orthopedic surgeons office today. My doctor is out of town, but one of his partners will see me, and hopefully it is Scarpone. Scarpone is one of the orthopedists for the Pittsburgh Steelers (I'm a Browns fan, but hey, if pro football players trust him, so do I LOL)

I'll try to update tonight, I'm still in alot of pain, and taking lots of pain killers when I don't have to drive. Makes me kinda loopy LOL

Hugs to all
Janis

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Hoping and praying for the best for you, Janis!

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Janis I really hope it is not a break I second Tammy.

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Me too Janis!! Hope you get good news!
Hey everyone...puter is still working..but still no sound.:( Still waiting on my son...lol!!
Anyway...off to do my shopping for the week. Hope you all have a wonderful day!
