The Recipe

Watertown, NY

I would welcome a visit. I would love to take you to see the sights of our beautiful area.

Blackshear, GA(Zone 8a)

I am trying to mix the recipy and got this quote from Watson Ranch:
2 gallons of Gulf of Maine $52.00
2 gallons of Humate Tea $12.00
2 oz Garlic Spray $8.00,
Is that a good price?
André

(Maggi) Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Seems ok, except the garlic spray - 2 ounces for $8? that seems a bit steep. Those gallons will go a LONG way!

Blackshear, GA(Zone 8a)

I have many brugs and other plants on which I will try it on also. For the garlic spray, it was the only vendor I could find for now. Thanks for the information, I will dig deeper into it.

Bump for Emma.

SOOO Ken...
what is your latest mix like...
have you added the orange oil to it as you were considering.. for insects..
it seemed your tea tree oil was going in at 12 drops/ mix.. is this the same now..
do you use the bloom booster mix in for blooms.....or have you started trying some other add ins for blooming.. [ the mix seems to me to be heavily nitrogen based on it's own .. everythings so green]
do you still spray daily
have you increased the ammount you use per gallon.. up from the 2 tbs/gal it seemed you were useing..are you up to the cup/gal Brenda mentioned..
Do you spray early/ late.. is there a difference.. I've been spraying late here.. roses and all.. and the wetting of the roses late..rather than promoting fungal problems.. really combats them.. and on the early late question.. do you figure there is a difference in the way.. the plants benefit for one or the other.. does the plant... resting after spraying in the evening ..keepingtheir pores open..seem to give the same benefit to the plant as having it activly growing.. and soon closing up the stomata after spraying.. as the day heats up...
one other question...what do you figure it does to the slugs inthe areaa..they are attracted to beer [ yeast ] andto cover the garden in beer...seems like it would bring them up from the dark leafy haunts to the plant leaves.. but I haven't noticed many more of them..
but it's working here.. Ilove it... did Iuse 1/4 oz /batch TTO the lastime.. seems like alot .. I know I increased it... I'm making up 4 batches at a time... and it's got everything doing just wonderfully.. Thanks again.. Gordon
OH..I remember afew questionsfor the users... has anyone noticed a decrease in bird activity in the garden..is it the amonia..and making it smell like a big cat marking all over the garden.. there is an insect decrease here.. and could that be keeping my birds away.. or is it that they have moved out of the area already thanks..

I got an email from Puritans Pride advertising ==buy1 get 2 free. Checked into 'tree tea oil' app $10. for 3 (2oz) bottles +1.00 shipping. Good deal .
jana

DeRidder, LA(Zone 9a)

Gordon, I use the recipe often and not only do I have birds but butterflies, bees, & dragonflys.....lol, everywhere! I don't really smell the amonia after it's applied to my plants....I use 1 cup to the mix.

Jana, thanks! That is a good deal from Puritans Pride and plan to place an order.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

OH.. thanks ..
That's a cup of mix per gallon of water that you use...
No...I don't smell the amonia when I spray outside.. either ... I'm loving it..I didn't spray last evening..as it was so cold.. I thought they would enjoy being wetter if it I sprayed them in a bit of the days warmth today..
I've a few canas on the roof myself...I'd got a canna from Alice there at their cannna/ brug nursery... it must be 10-12 ft tall now... maybe more .... truely amazing.. it gets the daily spray also..
what's the tallest you've seen them grow there in canna country.. her tuber must have been the thickness of my fore arm...just up from my wrist when I got it... Thanks.....Gordon

DeRidder, LA(Zone 9a)

Gordon, I didn't know you liked cannas too! I have one I want to send your way if your interested. Would like to see how Pistol Pete grows in New York on your rooftop next spring. A picture of Pistol Pete is on the canna forum, and also on Ebay with more details. Here's the link
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=360089686796&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT

I didn't have any luck rooting your cuttings of T. X T. Passion Vine but I'll send you cuttings and maybe you'll have better luck than I did rooting this beauty.

LMK about Pistol Pete......I'll ship Mon. if you want him.

Dollie

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Hi Dollie..
well that Pistol Pete is unusual... quite a flower ... is it one of your making.. I'd love to have one.. Thanks... I'll get it in a place where I might get a good picture of it flowering with the city in the background for you.. most of the cannas do rel well for me... folks comming by have difficulty IDing them as Cannas... as they are so much bigger than they are used to seeing them. guess it 's the full sun and roof heat... well also incessently feeding every thing here... lots of organics... and plenty of growth spurs.. and hormones.. flower inducers... I'm pretty mercyless in boosting them up..
so back to your post as to how much of the recipe you use.. did you say you used a cup of it.. is that to a gallon of water.... I've got to increase my doseage then...
well all the best to you there... Gordon
OH.. glad to hear your local wildlife is uneffected... guesss it's some other local reason.. like the year they sprayed for the mosquito West Nile virus... and since then I see only a few honey bees.. Oh we'll spray at night .. and only get the mosquitoes... RIGHT.. they have to remember... there will be concenquences .. AND...not all will be evident from the beginning
here's my 12' baby and she flowers too..

ROTFL!!!!!!

Flat Rock, MI

OMG what a great laugh to end the evening with. lol lol I have tear's running down my face. That was great!!

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Please forgive my non-knowledge, but I have never used anything but Miracle Grow to get all my flowers and bushes going good in the spring for growth, and then I switch to Miracle Bloom (what you're calling Bloom Buster I suppose) to get lots of blooms all summer. Am I correct in thinking that you all are using this year round as an all purpose "fertilizer - bloom enhancer"? And a good dosage is 1 cup per gallon sprayed on the leaves AND around the root? Thanks so much, Karen

Anderson, SC(Zone 7b)

Bwaahahahahaha!! That's a good one, MolaMola!! lololol

DeRidder, LA(Zone 9a)

Gordon, Love your canna! Judging by the sky in the background she must be very tall.
For the recipe I just double Ken's recipe and add a few other things like bone meal. When I make a batch always make enough to share with family, friends, & customers. They all love the recipe like me.
Email me your address if it isn't listed on DG. I'll ship Monday.

Molamola, Lol...

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Karen,
Somewhere up above, Ken says he uses 1 tbl per gallon. Later , he stated he was going to increase the dosage to see if it improved things. I don't think he ever said whether he increased the dosage or what the results where. Ken just uses it as a foliar spray. A few others use it both ways.
Veronica

Cumberland, MD(Zone 6a)

Thank you Ken! I have used it on almost everything in the yard & garden this year. I don't notice less bugs or birds the smell is gone after it dries. I tried doubling the amount but I think the 1 tablespoon is good enough. I didn't notice enough of a difference to use twice as much.

OOOOOOMOLA,MOLA,MOLA great !~~~~~

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello all! I bought all the ingredients to make the recipe today and have a couple of questions please. First, why does no one add fish emulsion to the recipe? Is it not needed or would it be bad to add? I hear people talk of spraying it alone.....

Secondly, I have "stick" cuttings with no leaves rooting in the orchard moss. Would it benefit the cuttings to be sprayed daily with the recipe as well as light watering with water and superthrive? Thanks!

Pawleys Island, SC

I mixed up my first batch of the recipe last week. Everything looks great except the bouganvillea, Oops. I forgot they really don't like plant food. LOL

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

bump because I'd like to know before I try adding fish oil tomorrow when I mix it all up ☺

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Karen..
well there is some fertilizer in it if you use the recipe with the MG... I use either the balanced MG .. or the Bloom Booster as some do.. depending on if it's vegetive growing or flowers I'm pushing.. now..sometimes I add additional fish oil ferts myself..to the already fertilized recipe.. without any problems..
so you should be fine with it also.Gordon

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I guess I better try ths one.. I use a little differnt one for the other plants, now that I have a brug I will try this one. thanks!

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you Gordon! I didn't see that it would hurt anything but wanted to ask!

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Surer I can't ever see any detrimental effects from overfeeding brugs... I'd hate to think how much that might be... now i'm adding a 2-54-28 to it... along with the bloom booster.in the recipe... aside from a yellow leaf now and again... just getting a pile of buds ..
the fish oil is a little on the gentle side some being 5-1-1..heavier on nitrogen than I use this time of year here.. just trying to get the last few buds and flowers.. mercilessly..

darkmoondreamer, You can add fish to it. I did when I couldn't find just the seedweed by itself. Be sure to not use it inside & you will want to make sure to stand downwind when you spray outside. Stinky! The smell dissipates after about a half hour.

Humble, TX(Zone 9a)

I need to make up another batch of the recipe today. My largest brug that is about 7 ft. tall and bigger around got hit by IKE and split in 4 pieces right down the middle at the base. I am not sure what to do to it. I tried pulling it all together and putting supports around it but that is not working. It is still alive but I can't let it stay that way. Question: should I cut it way back and let it start new growth,, is it too late in the season for that??? or leave it alone ???? Help

jana

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Jana, Take the 4 pieces and root them. This link shows you how. If the mother plant doesn't make it you have 4 replacements.

Tyler, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you Bettydee, I have not read that one and it was very clear.

Humble, TX(Zone 9a)

OOOO great Betty, thank you for the help. I will do this and try to save my big brug. Actually it has at least 8 to 10 very tall stems ,,, I hate to strip them but I know I have to !!!! it hurts me. It is blooming like crazy, too.
jana

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Jana.. well.. that link was for someone looking to overwinter their things right after the chopping.. you have other circumstances..
you were in the ground with it .. right..
your special considerations.. you've got another two months anyway... of brug life... growing
personally... I'd cut away any damaged parts... if there's something that is still attached and growing on the roots.. undamaged.. I'd leave that on.. with the hunks you cut off... well whisdom is to remove the buds and flowers.. so as notto take away energy from rooting..You seem to like to see them... I'd leave them on to flower .. and bring joy.. likely it's pretty strong and healthy now... at this part of the year... and you've plenty of time before cold.. phoey to whisdom.. where is passion...
I'd keep the flowers on... remove the big leaves.. and keep the new smaller ones.. to grow and drive the rooting.. place the end in water. and procede as before... when you get little white nubbins.below the water line.. remove the big standard... and pot it... place a big stake tie it to the trunk... continue rooting by placing it in mottled sunlight ...something for the little leaves to enjoy.. as soon as it gets some flow from the nubbins/roots to the plant... increase the light.. you can tell if it's too much as the little leaves will wilt... that's your speedomenter..move it to a darker spot if they are wilting on you.. move it lighter brighter place .. as it is successful where it is...
do this to all of the damaged pieces.. it is a good time to remove some of the secondary limbs.. and look / prune for a clean open form for it to develop from.. these littler bits can also be rooted..
if it hasn't enough energy... it will tell you by the smaller leaves wilting... you can remove the flowers then... unless the poor thig is so weakened by the time it has spent not responding to your first aid.. give it a try... Gordon

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

The main part of your mother plant will regrow from what main trunk survived. Keep however much of the main trunks that will survive in place and let it grow.. trim away what is wilting and root those pieces. I truly feel for everyone who has lost so much down there.. my brother and sister in law are currently homeless.. they lived in Galveston. I hope to get some cuttings this fall and am going to start her a new brug so when they have another home.. she will have a new brug for the yard. Nothing like starting over.. again. What color is your brug you are trying to save?

Tammie

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Do you have to have Beer in that recipe? I have everything but beer... no one drinks beer around this house LOl would wine work? just curious.. I have been using tea tree oil for along time.. and I add milk to keep the mildew away from other foiliages.. what does the beer do? is it the hops or the fizzy stuff? just call me curious

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

We just get the cheapest beer at the beer store (a sixpack) and just keep it with all of the other ingredients to be used just for the recipe

Thank you Gordon for the info. I went to the store and bought a bubbler to use. I will have about 7or 8 large , tall stems to pot and several smaller ones. My back yard is mostly dappled shade/sun so I will find the best spot, like you said. And I will leave some blooms on too !!!
Tammie, so sorry to hear about your brother and sister in law.
Do they plan to rebuild in Galveston? Thank you for your info and help on my brug. It is a beautiful pink with a hint of peach,,, don't know her name.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Jana, I agree with gordon, if she is still perky, then help her out, the bubbler will work wonders, wish i could send you mine, I have to CUT it OFF... whaaaa... better to have God do natures' trimming than me! Mine is called Versi Peach, but I have yet to see her bloom, hopefully she will bloom before I have to cut her up. I am going to leave her feet in the ground, and cover them up real warm, and like everything else I have experimented with.. she will prolly come back to me. You have blooms! YAY!
Tammie.. sending prayers for your family in galveston.. hard to believe all those homes and businesses gone just like that..

Got the beer! LOL One big tall giant can of Bud??not light?? LOL my hubby asked me if I was making me a red beer...
