The Recipe

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Did somebody say not to use this stuff on bouganvilla? I sprayed it on mine and it just exploded in bloom. Until this year I was lucky to get 6 flowers on it and it's a huge plant, growing in the ground and getting as tall as my house. But I don't put MG in my version. I also didn't use any humate because we were pinching the juice out of every penny we had at the time.

Ok, I have read some of this very long thread and scanned most of the rest of it, but I am a little confused as to the exact recipe and instructions for use.

Could someone please bottom-line this thing for me and post the final receipt and instructions?

Thanks

I just purchased a Peaches and Cream from Maggie. She and her husband are the ones who came up with this particular version of the Recipe.

The recipe was added to the bottom of the Brug description complete with instructions:

Quoting:
Plant Elixir, 'The Recipe', whatever you call it, it WORKS!

INGREDIENTS
2 cups water
1 12 oz can of beer
1/2 cup household ammonia
1 cup Epsom salt
3 Tablespoons Tea Tree oil
1/4 cup unsulphured molasses
1/4 cup liquid seaweed (Kelp)

Optional**
1/4 cup water soluble fertilizer (dry measure) (We don't use this)

MIX all ingredients. Add one or two tablespoons to a gallon of water and spray on plants. Family Dollar has a one liter pump sprayer for $2.50 that works well for this. You can also use this to water the plants with, but use it sparingly.

STORE unused recipe concentrate in a cool place, shake before using.

For some reason I thought Ken had said at one time that he was up to 6 TBS. per gallon for the Brugs....That is what I'm using in my spray....

I've noticed that many of you that don't drink beer, like me, think you have to buy a whole six pack or borrow from someone who drinks to just get one can. Any beer store in the U.S. will break a six pack and sell you only one beer. Many times, they have singles in a tub of ice at the front of the store, or in a special place in the coolers. Just ask them! Of course, this only applies to beer stores, not grocery stores....

Thankfully, I have a son that drinks beer once in a while, so he brings me a bottle instead of a can, and it works just fine.. my question is.. the seaweed kelp.. have not been able to find it.. Debra

joeswife,

I will probably go with something like this http://www.planetnatural.com/site/maxicrop-liquid-seaweed.html , because I have used this company for several years for their grass hopper remedy.

The recipe for the Elixir did not address the concentration values of the Tea Tree Oil nor the liquid seaweed. I am assuming the Tea Tree Oil is of the Essential type and I will mix the seaweed per the directions on the label.

OK, Karen, you are alright using that much on established plants, but you might want to dial it back for cuttings.

Also, please don't use this on seedlings until they get at least 3 sets of TRUE leaves. Spraying it on the emerging seed leaves tends to burn them up and you lose all your seedlings.

As for the proportions, this recipe works well for us. Remember, you are further diluting this with water.

The Tea Tree Oil we have found a number of places, yes it is the essential oil. We have found it at WalMart, Walgreens, CVS, health food stores and someone even found it at a dollar store.

There are a few organic fertilizer companies that market their products through the major stores like Lowe's and WalMart - but those stores generally move that merchandise off the shelves to make way for holiday items.

I have found the liquid seaweed (kelp) at regular garden centers and feed stores.

Hope this helps :~)

Some states do not allow for individual can sale of beer. It is to slow down drinking and driving. If your state allows for it, many convenience stores keep tall cans on ice for individual sales. Also beer can frequently be bought in quart bottles. I discovered all of this when trying to buy a beer to make beer batter for onion rings. I did not have enough money with me to buy a 6 pack and just needed one can. Check out the smaller establishments. You know the ones. They are usually a little dingy looking on the outside and not as well lit as the large franchise stores. They are usually mom and pop type operations and stock items for the smaller sale. They usually have quart bottles in a fridge. Earning the fast nickles keeps them alive, where the larger chains go after the larger sales like 12 packs and cases. There is frequently a partial quart bottle in my fridge. Onion ring batter does not care if the beer has gone flat and neither does "the recipe". Here is a great idea. Make the recipe and onion rings tonight. THe brugs and family will all be happy!

Haha, thanks for the tips Kathy! I wasn't aware of other states regulations, I should have thought more before I made the "everywhere in the U.S." statement....Guess just the few states I've been to allow one can sales so I assumed too much. The quart idea is a good one also! Think I might make onion rings tonight!

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

I wanted to make onion ring while visiting in another state. I pleaded with the store owner to sell me a can. That state had a 32 ounce min sale. He could sell me a quart bottle or 3 12 ounce cans but could not sell me a single 12 ounce can. I really would like the state congress to explain to me how it is safer to sell a drunk 3 cold cans as opposed to one cold can while he is driving down the road. LOL

I read the ingredients of the kelp and the superthrive.. they are very similar so if you can't find the kelp, I think you are OK with just the superthrive...they are both mineral and vitamin suplements. If you look at all the different combinations of this recipe you will notice a general theme..... you have a well rounded fertilizer ... mineral and vitamin suplements, the molasses helps growth of good microbes, the amonia is part of the fertilizer.. tea tree oil is an antiseptic and antifungal..I am not quite sure what the beer does in the mix but it can't hurt!

Whatever combination of the recipe you use.. the plants seem to love it.

Bump! It's about time to start mixing the recipe. I sprayed (almost daily) the brugs, seedlings, other flowers, garden veggies, trees, bushes & even my houseplants (not the cactus). I only sprayed a coating on the leaves, not enough to drip everywhere & waste it. I diluted it to half or a third dosage for the seedlings & houseplants. I will definitely be using it this year after seeing the results. I use it in addition to my regular fertilizer schedule.

Hey Gordon! I was just thinking of starting a 2009 Recipe thread. I could link to it here, with a link back from the new one.

I'd like to see how people change it up this year - all the additions and tweaks are interesting. If I could get it together amongst all my other activities I would like to post photos this season - which I never could get to last season. I'd really like to see other folks' results too.

I occasionally run across Peter's Professional 20-20-20 which I always liked better than MG, I really can't say why I liked it better, I just did. LOL!

I posted a new thread for 2009 with all the different 'recipes'. If I missed one, please add it :~)

I was hunting the recipe. I have a new greenhouse and needed a good spray for starting seeds. I read the thread and saw about chemical injectors. Went to ebay and oh my,,, !!! I bought another dosmatic. Ebay is evil, I snaged a $ 700.00 injector used for $ 74.00 including shipping. If you can afford one or catch one on ebay cheap that is the way to go. They last forever and work like a charm. I use my current one on 3 acres tied into the irrigation system.

I did need a larger one. The current one only would do 15 gpm so there was a pressure drop. This one will do 40 gpm.
