The Recipe

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Brenda and Joyce, you made my day. I'm so glad I'm not the only nut. My DH thinks I'm nuts for trying to think of a way to harvest the cow patties that are scattered out in the pasture. A shovel would take too long and kill my back. I need something to sweep or push the stuff into a poop catcher.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL A dustpan? LOL

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

You need one of those big potato harvesting machines, with the conveyor belt, to carry the patties up and dump them into your PU truck!

Athens, PA(Zone 5b)

☺☺☺OH! You folks are giving me a fit of hysterical laughter this morning☺☺☺♥

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Well, if they are dry, you could do the frisbee thing.. LOL Just keep the dog away.. LOL

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

You all are just too funny. This reminds me of the day my little daughter picked up a patty and said "Daddy, why is this rock so light." That's it, give the kids a job. Go pick up the light rocks, a penny....a piece :) (I like the frisbee thing also, just so they don't respond like a boomerang.)
My neighbor just behind me has a miniture horse, I hear their manure is good for roses. Maybe I will trade him his horse manure for giving him shots. (Both would be to his advantage and my roses would love the manure).

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Can't have anything that damages the grass. DH would kill me! The device would have to skim over the soil, bend but not break the grass spears and pick up the poo. The dog is the one who flattens the stuff!!! At least the ones she rolls over.

MyRee, you would have to let the horse manure REALLY mature. It is strong enough to burn plants.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Plus from experience where a cow really digests her food a horse doesn't and I ended up with major weed problem from using horse manure!!!!!!!!! BEWARE!!!!!!!

Watertown, NY

Those reasons are why I like my worm poop. Three bucks a bag, delivered to my house. doesn't smell bad, doesn't burn plants and my brugs grow like crazy with it. PERFECT!!!!

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

Well, I guess I need to find some Worm Poop

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I'm bringing that lady with the rabbits a brug for a garbage can of rabbit poop. LOL

I'm gonna hit the bait shop soon Brenda, that is just tooo good of an idea to forget!

Watertown, NY

Two of the best calls I have ever made where to the worm poop man(he hates when I call hime that) and to a big landscape business looking for pots.

We spray painted 10, 15 gallon black tree pots last spring with that new paint made for lawn furniture, evan added tape so when removed they where striped. They looked like expensive pots, we spent 9 bucks on paint.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

I just ordered 2 oz of tea tree oil. It costs $6.94 including delivery. I got it here: http://www.puritansale.com

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I need to find someone with rabbits! guess I could post on freecycle of something to see if I can find some. How big are those bags you get for $3?! I paid $10 for a gallon size bag full and it was not full.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Well, the stuff I got was full of shavings and straw... so it's not what I expected, but it's still wonderful for the compost pile... I got 2 HUGE garbage bags full and it was heating up in the bag already.. a perfect "shot" for my compost!

I encourage others to do what I did... It could turn out to be a very positive and heart warming thing. It so happens this woman was wonderful.. I had a great visit with her.. one of her horses grabbed a bag of alfalfa pellets out of the back of my truck and it was a priceless moment! So cute! He had his eye on us the whole time.. casually walks up.. and snatch! It was too heavy for him to get away with it.. but what a kick in the pants that was!

Ends up, this woman has a huge chicken coop.. and plenty of poop! LOL She has rescue horses, mini bunnies that stoled my heart, cool dogs that "fetch" rocks, a dog that likes to pull the horses tail.. so much fun... a really great place. I am very grateful that I found her ad at the feed store and I made the call.

She LOVED the brug I brought her, and has room for plenty more!

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Joyce, that sounds like such a wonderful experience!

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Isn't life fun?

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

If you can get your Horse poo from stables that only feed the pellets you wont have to worry about weed seeds. Or at least it has not been a problem for me.
So funny how things work out... It seems like just the other day I was wondering how in the world I was going to ask a total stranger for poop LOL!! They all seem to take that 3 second pause and then say, you want what??
Yes Ken very fun!!

My $3.00 bags are 75 pounds, great bargain.

I love all of my freebie stuff. I also get rabbit poop from a lady in my office. she is thrilled to get rid of it. I have a compost bin at work for it, I have two nice flower beds in front of my office. We get so many comments from people who come in. They love the brugs. The first year I was there they all thought I was crazy when I came to work with bags of worm poop. Now they all buy it too. Didn't take long for them to see the improvement in the flowers out front. These beds have gone from a few stringy petunias to traffic stoppers now.

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Worm castings is much better than other poop because it has been broken down much further. Think of it, when other poop,(cow and horse) hits the ground, the worms go to work breaking it down even further. Down here, worm farming is big business and they do not give their castings away. We pay $13.99 for a 40 quart bag and we still use it in every batch of soil we make up

Ken, I have to post a pic of the recipe results for outside... Even though I complained and whined.. I continued to use it. The best results were in the GH outside.. the plants that had lost almost every leaf when the GH blew apart and they got blown to bits, cold and soaking wet...
I WISH I would have gotten a pic of the sticks I put back in there.. but it was so upsetting, I didn't want a reminder! Anyway.. there was not 1 full sized leaf...

Thank you Ken for posting this thread... it took some coaxing for me to start using it.. and you all put up with my complaints... LOL I'm sorry.. cause I'm eatin crow now!

Nadine's husband gets a big kick out of watching us harvest DaisyMae's piggy poop there. It's like an Easter Egg hunt, gleeful shouts from us when we find another pile of pellets. Guffaws from N's DH.

We have a big wooden crate Ken dragged home from a job. The plan is to drill holes in bottom, line it with window screen and try another worm box here. I would love to have theraglady's source of worm poop!

Ken said something last night about eating crow; he says if it cooks long enough and is smothered in BBQ sauce it's not too bad. I think that's the voice of experience speaking. ROFLMAO :~)

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Toooooooo funny Maggie! I laughed so loud! I'll keep a bottle of bbq sauce close from now on! Great tip! LOL

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

UH OH..I just did that today!! I gathered up some piggy poop...hahaha...LOL...ohhh my ears were burning too...LOL

Anderson, SC(Zone 7b)

I'm just a newbie to Brugs, still - have a couple hibernating in my closet that will be brought out this week. And I'll be using your fertilizer recipes for sure..... but the real reason I'm posting here tonight is....

You guys CRACK ME UP!!! ROTFL! Calling and asking people for poopie.... LOLOLOL

If I substituted orange oil for TTO, would it do the same job? And is it toxic to cats?

(Maggi) Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

The problem I found with Orange oil is that I can't get it suspended in the mixture, it rises to the top. Also, if the mixture is kept cold the Orange oil clumps.

I'm not sure the Orange oil has the same properties the Tea Tree oil has either. I guess more research is in order.

In the meantime, Ken has been spraying every day. We did suffer a huge outbreak of aphids on the block of Apricot Smoothies (one gallon). What's weird is that the block of Ambrosia to the left and the B.v. salmon on the right had NO aphids at all, and there isn't separation between the blocks of varieties. So, I am guessing Apricot Smoothie is an aphid magnet.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

It's fascinating how different varieties of the same plant can be so different. Does apricot smoothie have trouble with aphids all year? BTW where is Big Sandy?

Well I need to find a substitute for TTO that doesn't hurt cats. Maybe Neem oil? I'm guessing it works on all bugs, I hope. Or maybe if I just add garlic that would just keep them away.

Why do you need a substitute for Tee Tree Oil? Tee Tree Oil is more for fungus than pest. We have never had a problem with aphids on any Brug until this Winter, then again we have never had a hoop-house before. Why would you think TTO would hurt cats?

Big Sandy is 30 miles north of Tyler. My mother's family is from Junction.

Inappropriately high topical doses have caused depression, weakness, in coordination and muscle tremors in dogs and cats. Supportive care has been sufficient to achieve recovery without sequel within 2-3 d Villar 1994

I found this on one of TTO's wed sites. There are a lot of them so look and see who is selling and who is giving information.

I have read a lot of them and they all say about the same thing on what it can do for humans but not plants. So we are It.

A friend brought me a bottle and it set around for two or three but I am not into the natural med. until I put my hand in a fire ant bed and my hand was covered and I put every med. I had in the house on my hand and nothing help and then I remembered the TTO that she harped on for years.
By this time I was in bad shape. I was ready to go to the ER to get shots. I put the TTO on and with in minutes the pain had stop so I thought, oh well, I was just over reacting about the pain and forgot about it. the next morning I looked at my hands and between my fingers were the ant bite blisters
but on top my hand was clear. When I put the TTO on I was hurting so badly that I was just rubbing the tops of my hand. Then I believe it could heal but sadly there is not much research on it so you have to be careful and read what you can find that is not biased .

Well, I can't remember if it was on this thread or one on the Tx Forum, but somebody was talking about TTO being poisonous for cats. It's very strange, because TTO is in some flea shampoos and various other things that intended for use on cats. I guess you just have to be very careful how often you use them. I think it's the Happy Valentines Day thread that Frostweed started where they were talking about that. And somebody posted a link to some site that had a lot of info on TTO being poisonous to cats.

I don't think I every had aphids in my gh, but I have had white flies, I think. I can't remember for sure, but they haven't been a problem since I don't have angel wing begonias in there any more. They would always go after those begonias and then eat my hibiscus. I still have the hibiscus, but no bugs. The only pest I have is roaches and maybe mice.

I was curious where Big Sandy was because there is a community near here that is called Sandy. Atleast that's what I thought it was, but I was beginning to wonder if I had it wrong. Junction is a very interesting town. I know some people there who have a pecan business. Their name is Akers, so they named their place Akers Acres.

It is pretty amazing stuff, but used wrong it can be dangerous too.

Justelleon,

I am so glad I read this tonight. I am covered in burning blisters from fire ants. I just happen to have bought the TTO for the "recipe". I am heading to the cabinet as soon as I get up from here.

I hope it works as good for me as it did for you. I was just thinking I would need to go to the doctor if it didn't look better by Monday.

I think this will help a lot about the cats. The word is inappropriately, high doses.

Oh Ok, Bettydee. Thanks, I'm glad you did.

For those who don't have TTO, I have found that either bleach or ammonia works very well on most stings. It doesn't take a lot either, just a little bit and then rub it in some. Rinse off when it quits itching. But TTO is probably the healthier thing to use. It also has antibacterial properties I've heard. I have some, but I've never had a reason to use it much.

Tyler, TX(Zone 8a)

Charlene,

Bless your heart. NO! where but TEXAS. We always brag that every thing is bigger in Texas but this is one thing that I wish we could have less of and smaller then any on else.

I will pray because it realy hurts, I know. Please let me know who you are.

Will Dave let me change that dunb name? Joan Estelle is my name and I was to dumb to know what I should put there.

Joan,

The TTO seems to help relieve the burning for a while. I had several places that had broken blisters that really were oozing. The TTO has helped to dry that up. I do have to keep re-applying it, I do it twice a day.

I got into the fire ants at home and they are on both hands and arms. I got into them twice in one day.

I was out in the woods where an old house used to be and I was getting old daffodils and some irises. They were along an old fence line and it had a lot of undergrowth of thorny bushes. I got scratched. That is not all that happened. I had no idea that this time of the year I would need to be careful about redbugs. I am covered in scratches from bushes, blisters from fire ants and everywhere on my body where skin folds or elastic touches, I have red bugs.

In addition, I fell down while out in the woods crawling along the old fenceline. I have two bruises and one of this is huge and ugly. I told my husband that if I were to die in an accident, they would think I had been abused. Of course I have been abused, but it was self inflicted by bugs and thorns.

A girl will do anything and suffer all ills to get a plant.

Crazy in buffalo!
Charlene

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh Charlene you really took a beating! Was it worth it? Did you get your daffs and irises?
