I just can't thank nap enough for tagging the "picture dog", I enjoyed that thread so much, what a good laugh that thread is. I tagged it again and am glad to see that was ok, I had wondered if we should "re-tag" things, I mostly did it so when I clicked to see my tags it would be there.
This was a great idea GW, thanks Dave for implementing it.
Tags feature for DG?
......yes, thanks for implementing it, but it's truly astonishing how fast you did it.
Suzy
Well, I guess it goes to show that it never hurts to ask! It was a thought that popped into my head and I knew I'd better start a thread about it here before it popped right back out of my head. Thoughts do that (scattered? who me?). LOL
Oops.. see the misspelled "propogation" in Kimberley's screen shot? I think I did that.. (blushing...)
Marylyn, if it was yours, you can track it back and take it out of the tag line (I think, anyway ;o)
I'll try it. Thanks, Terry!
Since it never hurts to ask....I still use the Home Page as my base - feels comfy :) Do you think we might get a Tag Cloud image put on there?
Yes, this is bad.....it's the new Lay's Potato Chip of DG - you can't stop at one :)
I'm missing two years' April Fools threads, Dave. LOL
That would be awesome, Dea! What hot at DG for the day!
not to put a damper on all of your enthusiasm, i was very comfortable with the favorites feature which is now gone. i had quite alot of threads that i followed through favorites and now because of the tag feature all of my saved favs are gone. as i am not real computer savy this whole thing has now become extremely hard to follow. why did you have to do away with the favorites to add tags? could you not have added them without deleting a feature that was easy to use???
Dea, the clouds are available on the homepage, too. See my post above about the Preferences to enable it.
bhaugh, there's such a limited amount of room up at the top of the page, that I didn't want to confuse things by -adding- a new icon...
Your existing favorites are still there, bhaugh. Look here for yours: http://davesgarden.com/tools/favs/ It will go to the listing of your favorites. There's a link to your favorites on your My Info page.
OOFTA!!!! Yup, there they are, right on top :)
sorry, see i told ya i'm not real good at this stuff....the favorites is no longer in the column on the right (where i always go to) and i didn't scroll down the page to look for them....my mistake
Hey, we all do that! For the longest time, I didn't know my Plants Database searches were bringing up results...Because I didn't scroll down to see them. LOL
Dea, is it you that's tagging OOFTA? LOL!!
If anyone else is trying it on their Home page, it looks really nice as "column 2, position 1"
Nope, not me GW - I just did "loves lies bleeding" :) Well, maybe I did a few more.....
ok, another stupid question.....how come i can no longer click on the file on the right to add something to my favorites? i really don't want to type in a subject line everytime i want to save a thread, there are some threads i like to go back to to get info and clicking the folder was easy and convenient. i am not trying to be a problem child or anything but this is very confusing for me and probably will be for others. can you make it to where those of us who do not use the tag feature can still just click the folder to add to our favorites?? i am not on DG over the weekends so by monday i know i will be totally confused. thankyou in advance for any help you can give me
Bhaugh, you had to name favorites when you made them, just in order to know what they were about, right? This isn't that different. Say you wanted to mark this thread as a favorite (I know, at this point, it's a stretch, right?). What few words or phrases would make sense for you to apply to it? Maybe something like these?
tags
how to make tags
dg tags
they're killing me with these tags (just kidding!)
Now when you go to your Info page, you don't have to scroll down a list of favorites. You can click the "View your tagged pages." link and look at your very own Tag Cloud, which contains only those tags you've applied to various threads and posts. If you've applied certain words or phrases to several threads or posts, they will be in larger, bolder type. Words and phrases you've applied less will be in smaller type. The bigger the use, the bigger the type appears.
Here are my tags, for instance: http://davesgarden.com/tools/tags/index.php?user=gardenwife
Does that help?

gardenwife, up until today all i had to do was click on the folder in the top right corner of the thread i was on, it was already named i didn't have to do anything else. to me it sounds like tagging something is just adding extra steps to saving your favorites. the threads that you are on or want to save already have names so why go through extra steps just to have them? did that make sense??
Yes, that makes sense. But I think this might just hook you if you give it a try.
Tags go beyond favorites in that you can easily organize threads by subject. Favorites just lists them in alphabetical order. With tags, you can go right to what, in your mind, the thread was about, why it is something you saved.
After playing today, I have finally figured some of this out like you say. It's not just the words I'm tagging, it's the things I'm interested in so when I tag one thing, it forces me to go find the other things and use the same tag words so that I can easily have them all at my fingertips.
Belly belly belly! :) Have a great night, bhaugh!
I just did the preference setting for a cloud on my homepage and I found column 2, position 1 a little too invasive because of it's length and it will continue to grow. Ended up doing column 2, position 10 so its at the bottom of the right side. But I sure do like having it on my homepage, this is such a cool feature. OK, now, this may be a dumb question, but what does OOFTA mean?
I believe it's a Scandinavian expression of surprise, astonishment or depending on how you use it, of dismay also
If you click on Oofta in the tag cloud and scroll down, you'll find a thread of someone asking Dave what oofta means. The tag cloud works! LOL
Hilarious!
Did you notice that huck & souky are tied with daylillies for having the most pages tagged? There are some talented writers here at DG!
( I decided to erase my post. Never mind)

Another helpful thing would be to add the date that the thread was started. Many threads under one heading on the Tag List can sound alike, just from the title. But if the date were showing, it might help to narrow down which one to select.
That's a great suggestion, but not easily implemented for technical reasons. I'll add it to the wishlist, though.
dave
I love this, Dave! Caught me by surprise when you did it so fast. Very, very cool!
Kathleen
I am wondering how many people do not know all this is happening!
LOL if they haven't been watching this thread so they see anything at all about the tags?
I love this new feature. While lurking here, I've been making tags and have started spreading the word elsewhere, too.
It's handy for me when I see people mention certain authors or books. I can bring up the individual posts and tag them with books, authors and fiction. Way cool.
First off THANKS GW for suggesting the 'Tags'.
I've been w/ Flickr since 2002 and frankly never thought to suggest it here.
Once you get used to it (and entering the tags) it becomes second nature.
As I look back at my photos there you can see a progression as I 'learned' to use Tags.
THANKS Dave for so quickly addressing GW's request.
I think it will become a well used function here as the years roll on......
I'll edit out this next question if it needs moved but.........
Is there a way of tagging photos on my PC?
I have thousands and really need a function like this to help me get organized.
Search...isn't cutting it.
Off to start Tagging.....
Ric
I think the only way to do it with your personal photos is to have photo software that uses it. I know Adobe Photoshop Elements does.
bhaugh, I too used to just save my favorite threads by leaving the subject line as is but often it was saved for a reason that wasn't even related to the original subject line and I would have to reopen it to see why I saved it. By changing the subject, it's much easier. Now it's the same with tags, a one or two word ID that makes it even quicker to see what that thread (or even better, individual post) is all about.
It is nice to be able to tag individual posts and whole threads too so we can go back to find exactly what we are looking for. That way when I take a thread off topic as I am frequently guily of doing, people can tag the real info and not have to waste time on my off topic silliness.
I really like the new "tags" feature! I think I'll adapt to the "clouds" concept pretty quickly, and I'm looking forward to "personal clouds."
I admit, I really never used the "favorites" button because it was just as easy to incorporate DG favorites into my regular bookmark folders. But for those who have become accustomed to it...
I know space is at a premium on the page, but that little button is pretty tiny... Is it really not possible to leave the favorites button in place as it was as a "bookmark" type option for those who prefer it and put another little button just below it for tags? I know the switch has already been made, which is why I didn't mention it sooner -- by the time I saw what was happening with the "favorites" button, it was a done deal. But, looking again at the space in that upper corner, I just wondered.
Then again, I'm not seeing a lot of threads in the DG forum entitled "Hey, what happened to my favorites ??!?" so maybe it's not going to be a major issue.
