Hey Kath, are you going to join us too, better get your seeds out I know you want to, sorry didn't see your post until now, I'm cleaning house and when I empty my vacum cleaner into the seeds beds I will will have lots of pretty flowers come up in the spring lol Cause they are alllll over my floor!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

hey LeBug what do you mean I don't NEED any!!!! yeah you're right :) but give me MORE MORE MORE...

Suzy I don't remember sending you in aster seeds??? I do love and have asters esp. a really nice tall purple aster (have the id in my journal). It is perennial and is gorgeous! Got the plant from Cape May NJ and just love it. I could save seeds for you LeBug next season or I can see if there are any seed left on it now? Let me know. Plus I have a photo somewhere.

Also, LeBug I love the Salvia Artemis and plan on trying it too. It caught my eye in the TM catalog.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Oh wind you should see Artemis in person I hope to have seeds next fall for it but some salvias are hard to collect from I hope this one isn't, that thing spreads almost 3', I just love it! They are easy to germinate I started mine outside in the spring and they got full grown about the middle of the summer they don't like a lot of water.

Suzy said she was going to save some asters for us I just misunderstood and I was just trying to get on you too he he
What is the tall aster that you have in yur journal maybe I can get some seeds to it I would love to have a tall one too? Do you have a couple of names? I'm going to start trying to collect some asters for this summer getting ready to check the catalogs out for some pink ones I've seen some of those that were pretty!

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

LeBug - I've got some New England Aster seeds from a really nice plant in my back yard. The pic I took is on my Tradelist: http://davesgarden.com/tools/tradelist/manage.php?list=have

Let me know if you'd like some and I'll tag them for you.

Robin

Nelson, NH(Zone 5a)

Hey all- I don't have commitment in me right now. I feel too crappy-and I was just out of town for a week and a half. I'm just plain spent, but it's nice to feel wanted! LOL!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Wind, Aren't you the one who sent me named Aster seed that wasn't dry enough to pack for the last swap? Didn't I dry it out and it's sitting upstairs? I'm packing it into big packs of 3-4 flower heads per pack because I don't know what Aster seed is. comapred with Aster seed husks.... they all look the same to me.

Le Bug I have some of those garage sale stickers with "Aster Le Bug" and Aster TCS written on them, but I have not packed the seed, nor put it in your baggie. Bt it's close, oh,so close.

Flowerhead, let it wait a week and see how you feel; there is still more to come!

Suzy

(Cathy), MO

No Suzy, that was me. I think it was the alma if I remember right.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

OMG! No wonder Wind was wondering what I was talking about :)) Well, I have 3-4 packs each - not sure because some of the flowers didn't actually open to fuzziness and I have no idea if those are good, but I suspect not. :)

Cat, I'm putting those 6 or 8 packs on to your total...and I couldn't help but notice there dont' seem to be many seeds tagged for you, so keep picking and choosing!

Suzy

(Cathy), MO

It's ok, I don't really want many this go round. I'm trying to get what I already HAVE sorted and organized. I can't remember what I sent you, but it was either Purple Dome or Alma Potchske. Those are the only 2 I have. :-)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Okay, then those are the two I have :)) To be honest, I just let them sit in a safe place where they could do their thing, and they did it. They are still there, waiting to go to good homes.

Suzy

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Okay - seeds have to be by Feb 1 - so I have to have them in the mail by Jan. 28 - so I still have 20 day to put my seed list together :-)

uh . . . you wanted good stuff, right? lol

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

On the other thread, 1st post, I think I put pepole have to sign up by the 18th, so make the 20th your last day to put up a list. That way we have a couploe days to look at it, and a couple days to pimp it out.

BTW, Yes, I would like some smaller purple putunias that you offered me in dmail. My dmail habits are not good because I forget there is a "save a new" button....I read it, and leave the windows open to go back to answer. Then I lose my internet connection or somehting, and all windows are gone :)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Gotcha - so I really only have 14 days to get my act together lol :-)

Okay - so I know what I am doing each evening this week :-)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Michaela, Think of it this way, I am ultimately helping you by setting a deadline....it is so easy to be staring at a huge box of seeds and freeze up right before sowing because you are wracked with indecision on what sowss first ,or what sows next. "Cull the Crap", sez I, so you can see the gems! (hmmm, maybe that's a better title than 2nd Chance LOL) ,

reminds me of a famous saying...Do as I say, not as I do.

LOL>>>

Suzy

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

I have found the following site very useful in helping me to find out what a seed of a certain plant looks like. As a newbie to seed collecting, it has really saved me from sending chaff instead of seeds out.

http://theseedsite.co.uk/db2a.html

I hope it is useful to someone. I know newbies will like and maybe even need it. It does not have all of the things I looked for but it has many many seeds and seedlings (for determining if it is a weed or flower) when it finally germinates.

Charlene

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Hi Robin :)

I think I have some New England Asters coming from someone but thanks! I'm never really sure about the seed anyway, I always have a rough time planting asters for some reason I don't think I hold my mouth right or something my germination rate isn't very good I might try them under lights this year so I can watch them lol

Suzy, thanks, I can wait on the aster seeds if you don't get them done, but wait maybe I shouldn't say that, then you will procrastinate lol You just have too much on your plate :) Have you seen your family lately? he he he

Kathy, that's a shame maybe next swap? :) I know how it is with no time, I may have to call this one my last it's starting to get time to plug in the lights, yeah!!!

Seandor, 20 days sounds like a lot of days but it's not that much time for all of the work we're doing is it lol This is like WORK LOL But I love it and can't wait to see all of these little seeds grow into those beautiful plants it's well worth it!! I have so many compliments on my flowers in the summer, that's what keeps me going and going and going!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Speaking of weeds how do these weed seeds always get into my jugs when I winter sow lol One year I had a shrub planted and thought great it germinated and only to find out it was a weed! lol I waterd that thing for a while until I figured it out lol

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, the delay is that I spent a lot of time going through ALL my seed packages and dividing them into each week from now until the end of April. Each zip lock baggie containing only the seeds to be planted that week. There are a LOT of seed packets - and I clearly will not use all the seeds. So what is really required is for me to go through each baggie, take only as much seeds as I want from each seed package, repackage seeds if necessary, then write them all down, and pass the extra along. This strikes me as overwhelming right now when I am teaching winter session courses, trying to get the syllabi ready for spring term which starts in a week, and write a conference paper by Friday. sigh . . . And remember, who I promised what to (gee - I sure appreciate it when people dmail me :-) I generally dmail people just so I have a list to return to so I don't forget :-)

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Frau, Wow! 50 packs! Thanks for snagging those for us!

Suzy

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Seandor, wow, you got a lot going on and I though I was going crazy! I just have to take care of my father and that's a hand full even though he is in pretty good shape, I think that's why he's a handful lol

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I think taking care of your parents must be very challenging.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Charlenesplants
That is such a good like to post here - thank you for thinking of it!

LeBug - That's funny, I heard your dad tells all his friends that he takes care of YOU! LOL!

You're not doing anything wrong on the Asters. Asters are notorious for being full of chaff. For all I know, Purple Dome and Alma Potschke are hybrids and don't even have seed in them. I'm sending the heads and there should be 500 seeds in there. If you get no germination, tell us! Tell the world! Pst to this link: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/801986/ that they are sterile. The seeds are drying on the shelf in DD#2s bedroom closet aka The Seed Room - they'll be the last think I pack.

How do I have time? I plan the timing on the swaps for when I have time. The Florida trip in the middle might be a huge mistake, but otherwise I couldn't make it down there until March and who would baby my seedlings?

Seandor - Be sure to click the link above. It tells you the seeds that might not be as viable as others. (The ones you should keep and not give away because gemination is uncertain from traded seeds?)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Okay, so I don't want to pass on seed-junk! Gotcha.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

LOL! No, It's not the passing on as much as you should keep every single bit for yourself because germination is uncertain on those kinds of things.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, right . . . I think I have been marking too much today lol

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Michaela, just give me an A

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Dear friend, you got it - for Clearly Superior gardening . . . A +

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

right back at ya

Thanks!

Princeton, TX(Zone 8a)

Is it too late to join? This is my first swap and like someone said above, just reading some of this my head starts spinning. When I read instructions I was convinced I understood what's to be done. And now, at the end of the thread.... I am scratching the back of my head....hmmm...

I've been off DG for a while due to some personal troubles... But now I am back and I have some extras from my garden and some leftovers that on my property I will not have room to plant (it's only 2 acres). I could send those and I will make a list to post here of everything I can send. I have a large butterfly garden and grow butterflies during summertime (non-commercial) - so I will be interested mostly in any butterfly nectar and/or host plants that I don't already have and a few of my favourites that I don't yet have which are not necessarily a butterfly magnet :).

I have a weakness for hardy geraniums (cranesbill geraniums) which I heard are hard to germinate (some of them). At the moment I have lots of seeds of:
-Monarda citriodora
-Verbena bonariensis
-Helenium (yellow)
-Asclepias Curassavica
-Purple leaf basil (I think - or cinammon basil, or both)
-Lablab purpureus Hyacinth Bean
-Zinnia-pink/white/yellow and mexican torch (orange smaller)

Will post a full list if I still can participate (?).
Thank you!
Elena.
.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Well, Howdy, Ma'am! (I always wanted to say that! LOL!)

Hi Elena, Yes, we'd LOVE to have you join us and we all love butterflies, so I'm sure you will find lots of stuff.

Let me get some links, so you can get the rule-stuff, but meanwhile, TCS has a butterfly welcome packet she's making up for you, and you know how to look for seeds, of course. We'll help you with some links to our pages...we just keep updating them instead of reposting.
Mine isn't quite up to date, but it will be 5 minutes after you read this. I'm in the #2 spot on this thread....take all you want! LOL!

We will start our conversation to you like this: Elena,
Then you know you need to pay attention. Everything else you can skip or read....we just ramble on.... people are skipping in and out. If you skip out, dmail me and I'll be your eyes and ears for butterfly nectar plants unti you come back. :))

I have some Bishop's Children dahlias that the Monarch's favored last year -- I am only pointing it out because I have never seen dahlias on any butterfly lists.

Hardy Geraniums are on their way....hang tite for another week.

Elena, (gotcha!) Mao is looking for Prairie Mallow ...do you have any of those seeds? Have you heard of them??? They are native to Texas. (Not that means you have them, but at least you've heard of them as a wildflower or something)

Okay, You passed with flying colors!

Elena, Glad you braved the herd! Don't let the piggy stampede scare you off. They're harmless. They just smell fresh seed fodder. LOL!

Ain't that the truth. suuuueeeeyyyyyyy!! here we come.

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

ROTFL! Absolutely! I was just outside (it was too warm to NOT go outside!!) and spotted some more seeds on my crepe myrtle, and some fruit on a liriope, so of course they got scooped up in a tissue :) Then, I was so completely distracted by the fact that there was no snow and I could get around that I forgot my first chore and was off looking to see if I'd missed any more seeds! You guys are just plain a bad influence - did your moms ever tell you that ;->

Pittsburg, MO(Zone 6b)

constantly, what's your point.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Lenka -- if you haven't ventured into the second thread yet... here is the link
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/802375/ It's only #2 ... in all the excitement, Suzy names it #3 and can't change it.

also ... what I have been doing, if i know a particular seed I want .. I use the search option in my browser, and search for it, most people are using the Latin Names, some common names and some use both.

To use the search, go all the way up to EDIT ... then FIND IN THIS PAGE [that is what FireFox says]
Internet Explorer just says FIND ... but it's in Edit.

if you are "Maragaran" then this post will be of interest for you http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4370885

Also -- if you see something you want, and dont want to get lost in all these posts... just DMail the person ... many of us are doing that.

have fun,

Terese

Hiya,
I just logged onto Daves Garden last night (late) and discovered the seed swap. I hope I'm not too late to join. I have lots of seed, I'll work up a list later tonight when I get off work. This could be the answer for me, money's a bit tight, but my love of gardening is as off the wall as ever....
