Well thank goodness for lots of snow insulation :-) (And I hate snow!)
90 days till Spring!
77 days.... and I am not looking at any catalogs.... they come in and ignore them!!!!
Even the rose ones??
Beautiful shot, Laura!
ooooh, that's pretty, Laura!
Gorgeous!! Ah, spring!! When it arrives, will we be ready?
I think it will take until May 15th to melt all this snow!!
I'm shooting for June 15th, that way I won't be disappointed!
We should begin a pool. When will all the snow disappear at pixie's and Candyce's?
The winner could get a plant? After we find them that is!!
That's a great idea.
A plant would be wonderful.
Now, finding the plants might turn into a scavenger hunt!
When the snow disappears, Celeste will have a big pool! And a lot of mud.
Victor, You sure got that right!
Lovely blooms!

another nice shot, Laura! And if you're taking walks, please come over to the "What did you see on your walk" thread and share your walk with us!
Louise:
I'd share my 'walk' stories, too, but they'd get rather boring rather quickly. I only get to walk out to the dog kennel, and then sometimes, I get to walk on the treadmill! Either way, the scenery pretty much stays the same.
donnie thanks for the invite I will . many times we see nothing unusual but every now and then we are surprised . the dog provides us with at least 2 reasons to take a walk a day .but when it is cold or stormy she is so funny when you say lets go for a walk she turns her head and won't make eye contact with you.

Laura,
I never have that problem. These puppies are always ready to go outside. I found out why they out the door like bullets the last few days every morning:
Last night my husband woke me up to see a herd of 6 deer moving through the neighborhood. They spent quite a while in my backyard emptying out the bird feeders!
Now I have to figure out how to make them go away so they don't find my gardens to be an "all you can eat buffet" come spring !
Its always something - how many days 'til spring now Kassia?
Deb
I counted 75 - am I right? It sure felt like Spring today - and Tuesday's supposed to be up around 60? I just hope it doesn't melt all the snow. I need my perennial cover for the next freeze that will come!
True - a little bit of snow until the end of Feb is okay - as long as the streets are clear.
On the other hand, if we could be assured that temperatures would not drop below 35 degrees at night, I would be happy - the cost of heating Our Old House is getting pricey!
The cost of heating our 5-year-old house is pricey, also! This year I surrendered to turning the thermostat down to 66 for the winter.
OMG you can heat your house to 66 degrees? Our Old House ranges from 58 degrees in the morning to about 62 degrees during the day.
I hope we can get used to lower temps, it's supposed to be healthier anyway.
I am with you Primrosesue. We have a fireplace and after the last bill came, I wandered out to the garage and grabbed some wood. DH came home looked at the fireplace going and then looked at the bill. The fireplace has been going now just about every day since December 12th.
We get filled every month so it will be coming up. Will be interesting to see what the bill is this time around.
The best part my DH works at a lumber mill. He gets all the wood and bark that he wants - free.
Worst part - wood is work. Lug, split, lug, stack, lug, tend to, and then more house work - lug the vacuume cleaner and dust more.
I can totally relate Sherrie. Before we put up our pre-fab 5 years ago, we had an old, old, old farmhouse - the low ceiling, back-to-back fireplaces, wide-plank floors, uninsulated kind. That was heated exclusively with a wood stove. DH did the logs (had a log-splitter), and I gathered the kindling.
We have a wicked long driveway and, even now, when I walk to the mailbox I automatically look for fallen branches!
72 days!!!!! oh that sounds so good... and I hope my roses don't wake up! just melt the snow on my driveway and I will be happy!
100 days until the first rose order delivery!!!!
primrosesue, When I saw that you wrote" wicked" long driveway I knew you must have grown up here in ma, am I right? it takes one to know one!
I like the wood stove but the mess and the way it dries out the air is wicked hard to take
laura
The snow has been melting pretty good here in Southern Maine over the last couple days. With the next two days in the fifites, I expect it to be all gone soon. Is that very bad for the perennials? It's not supposed to drop below freezing again until next week.
I also think our Spring is much further away...more like mid May instead of the official start in March.
Candyce - I know you have some nice views from your treadmill!! LOL
Laura - that is hands down the CUTEST doggie expression I have seen! I know just what you mean. Our Molly finds our morning walks to be just a bit too much, so she "deselects" when we say, "Want to go for a walk, Molly?" She immediately plops down on the floor and gives us a firm look. So, we let her make the call, and then we take her just around the block at sunset. When we get to the halfway point, she starts trotting. At 14 and a half, she's earned the right to call a few shots! LOL
Sue - your description of your old farmhouse was an exact description of our farmhouse up there. Now you know why I'm down here for the winter!
Everyone,
I love winter and snow, but I jumped on the mound of seed catalogs the minute they poured in on Jan. 2!!!!!!!!!
I've been staring at them like a starving person reading a Friday's menu!!!!
But, I've ONLY ordered about $175 worth of seed so far, and that's just from T&M, Swallowtail, Park's and OVM on ebay. I haven't finished w/ Burpee, Jung's, Schumway, Seeds of Change and whatever else has come in...
I attribute my mania to the fact that my baby boy is leaving for his Jr. year abroad this w/e. He's going to be in Geneva until April!!! What am I going to do?!!!
SO I've decided to plant as many flowers as possible all over my property- just spread seed like crazy and hope for a good year!
The 'Magellan' series Zinnias caught my eye this year, but they are pricey. I found the best price on them at Swallowtail seeds, in the bulk seed section. FYI.
Snow is melting here too. I could get used to these temps. If they only would last to the end of Feb. Lots of bare ground and remnants of last years garden showing now. I have been ordering already, not a good sign as that loooong shortest month Feb. always gets me crazy. Its all those pretty colors and descriptions of miracle plants that get to me on cold grey Feb. days. Hoping for an early spring with showers only at night and sunny blue skies during the day. Well this is the dreaming part of the year right? :)
Jax, I really like Swallowtail, too, they have a nice variety. $175 so far, huh - how big is your yard!!!
Sue, I just did the actual math- $242.17- talk about denial!!! I spent over $60 w/ Swallowtail alone! Love those "bulk packs"!!!
I have 2.5 acres, 60' of decking, plus a pond- probably about an acre in size.
Every year I add to the complexity! I have myself to the point that I've landscaped so much, I can't possibly afford to buy plants for every place I want them, so I'm focussing on adding annuals from seed for color, and letting my hostas mature. I have about 200 mature hostas, plus seedling beds. Since the hostas don't do much when young, I decided to plant a lot of simple shade annuals (coleus, impatiens, balsams) in pots and in the ground all around my hostas. I've reserved a sun bed for dahlias, sunflowers, cosmos, and zinnia. I have learned that I'm just not patient enough for perennial flowers to decide to establish themselves, so I'm going for an annual seed cutting garden this year.
i can't imagine spending that much on seed - i don't think i spent that much on all the PLANTS i bought last year - well, until it came to tulip ordering time...
to me, seeds are those little things that cost $1 - $3 a packet, and usually have twice as much as i can use..!
Sounds like you've got a great spread there, Jax. Make sure you post photos this year!
Sue, it's a work in progress!!! It's an awkwardly shaped lot, so it never looks like I want it to. Does it keep me from trying? No!
I have SO MUCH SHADE it's a real challenge.
I didn't think I spent very much either, amethystsm, but it's truly amazing what you can actually spend on gardening, once you add up all the little $1-3 purchases!!!
ok, it feels like spring... oh this week has been really great... I just hope my plants don't wake up yet!!!!
good to see dirty snow gone!!!
Isn't anyone going to thank me for bringing the cold weather back down to Florida with me and leaving the pretty weather up there for you guys???? LOL
