90 days till Spring!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

days are getting longer!!!!! happy winter solstice!!!! no I am not pagan, I don't worship nature, but I am so happy the days are getting longer!!!!!!! Let there be light!!!

Wymore, NE(Zone 5a)

Oh I second that. I've told people at work that, they didn't realize that the days will start getting longer. I'm excited, although it's starting to snow here, lots of winter ahead of us, but like Kassa said, the days are getting longer, YEAH!

North Augusta, ON

Yipee!!!

Are you all supposed to get this rain all day tomorrow?? Gonna be an awful mess mixed with the snow.

Van Etten, NY(Zone 5a)

We're supposed to get rain all day tomorrow. I guess the warmer temperatures will be nice, along with the nasty slush.
Here is a winter solstice sunset taken last night. The woods seems to be on fire.

Wymore, NE(Zone 5a)

Your right, the woods do look on fire. Beautiful sights!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I LOVE it when the days start getting longer! I HATE snow (well, I suppose it insulates the plants)

I started winter sowing yesterday - just so I could feel I was getting a start on spring :-)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Funny, my days are always 24 hours - what did I do wrong?!! Hee hee. Happy solstice to all. Here's hoping for a mild winter!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

You bet! mild and short!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

We haven't a prayer on the mild guys, not to be a downer...just realistic! We already have more snow in Dec. than the entire season last year, and the little woodland critters are taking it hard.
However, this evil white stuff is not so evil after all. It covers our little babies with a soft blankie while Mother Nature does her thing. And she has been showing her sh*^ now, hasn't she?
But I will take the short part, with longer days any time! It is actually almost 4:30 now when it gets dark! Yippie!!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

it's all a question of perspective... all I can think and wish is that spring come soon... so I can plant roses again... I love the spring blooms... summer were not that great... but spring was very special!!!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Kassia, thank you for the encouraging news! Ninety days doesn't seem so long. I always start to get excited once Christmas is over - I can spend January drooling over the seed catalogs; February and March seeding; and April walking around the yard looking for signs of Spring bulbs.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

We actually need the snow believe it or not. The melting snow from the mountains fills up our rivers and streams in this area. It does provide a percentage of the precipitation for the year. I know, I don't care for the cold to much either and I don't like driving in the ice and snow! But my cup is always half full instead of half empty and I try to make the best of every situation. Eleanor

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Eleanor, right now the only thing that bothers me about the snow is that Lilly gets snow all over her and I have to sleep with a cold dog... lol...

In a way I am glad the roses are sleeping! I need a break to finish making the labels!!!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I, too, am so glad that the Solstice has arrived!
The days will be getting longer, and the nights are getting shorter. But, with the already more than three feet of snow that we have received in December, I am a bit worried about just how much more snow we will get before Spring!

89 days and counting!!

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

We're dreaming of a green Christmas,
Just like the ones we've never had! (I know we're had green Christmases before but it sounded good)
Where the trees are swaying,
And children playing,
Out in__ the sun with mom and dad!
We're dreaming of a green Christmas,
With every gardening gift we wrap.
May your days be sunny and warm,
Then the plants can't have a long, long nap!!

Very, very anonymous!!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

That's a good one, Eleanor!!
I'll have it singing in my head all day long!

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks Candyce! Eleanor

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very nice, Eleanor. I'm with you!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I am from Vancouver and I LOVE green Christmas!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

oh I love it!!!!

(Zone 4a)

I personally could not live with a green Christmas. I think it is all part of the magic and beauty of the season. I guess it is because I grew up with it. I highly doubt I would even take a trip hot and snowless during the holidays. There are really fun things to do in the winter like skiing, sledding, all kinds of carnivals oh and not to mention skating. I get sick of Winter usually around the end of January....that is when I wish the snow would start leaving! LOL

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

I really don't mind the snow this time of year either. I don't have to shovel (DH does it) cause of a bad back and I'm retired and can stay inside and hibernate. I do get tired of it in February and can't wait for spring to bring the world back alive. But that just makes the anticipation much more exciting. I love watching for robins to come back, trees budding and every single sprout that comes up. I re-wrote Green Christmas for all of the gardeners who were, hhhmm, shall we say complaining!!! Spring wouldn't happen without winter so if we have to put up with it enjoy the beauty and dream of spring!! Please don't attack me after all i did write a song for you - snow haters!! It's my opinion only and I'm not trying to convince anyone to love snow - just trying to make you not so depressed and to laugh. Eleanor

p.s. - Not so funny snow story! My husband's work place was not plowed out one morning so he did it and backed into our car with the snowplow!! He had to tell the insurance company that he ran into his own car with a company truck!! :-(

It must be destroy the truck week. DH backed into a canopy and broke the rear window on the cap. Then he hauled wood and instead of moving my car tried to sneak by with the truck and ran into a large rock and scraped the truck. Then he said I have to shovel off the canopy, Thursday morning having coffee. I went out after he left and the canopy was caved in. Come to find out he had the truck under the canopy and it caved in on the pickup. Destroy your truck week.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Your poor truck Schick! DH's company truck wasn't damaged but I can't say the same for the car - $900 worth according to the insurance estimate! How much damage was done to the truck? Eleanor

Not much Eleanor. The worst the back cap window. My husband is a mechanic so, what ever he does he can undo like paint the truck if needed. :-)

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Eleanor, did you know that Robins usually don't migrate? I found out last year that they hang out in their breeding range - swampy areas and woodlands. They eat fruit/berries in the winter. Now that I know they're around, I keep an eye out for them.

Occasionally I'll see a group of a dozen or two in my crabapple(?) tree. So I took a kitchen strainer, put three strands of wire on it, and hung it in the tree - from time to time I'll cut up an apple and put the pieces in the strainer.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Oooo! countdown till Spring! I love it!! 88 days left!

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Sue - thanks for the info on robins. We don't see them around at all in our neck of the woods during the winter. I will watch though to see if I can find some. Eleanor

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Regarding robins - I always see a few hardy souls around my house all winter. A few weeks ago there was a flock of cedar waxwings and robins eating the dried and frozen pokeberries in the back yard.
Do you know what kind of berries they will eat? if so, I'll put some out for them.
So far the happiest birds seem to be the juncos. They must have antifreeze in their feet!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

oh I have a new bird feeder and until today it was squirel proof... oh I am telling you it's such a mess in the porch...
I have had so many birds... young cardinals and blue jays... and of course so many otheres that I don't know the name... I need a bird book...

87 days till spring...

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi Kassia!
How are you?
Deb

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi Deb - how are you? How was your Christmas?

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi Seandor!
I have my Mom's 9 month old Golden Retriever puppy to stay with me until April. So far its been utter chaos. His tail is a licensed deadly weapon! Andrew, my dog, is not amused.
The girls are happy with their MP3 players and hand-knit socks, the hubby got more camera gear and I got lots of knitting books and an amaryllis. I already have a number of roses scheduled for spring delivery so I have to wait for my presents.
How was yours? Nice and white?

It was great - went to a neighbours for Christmas - we don't have any family on the east coast - anyway, the neighbours have a HUGE house and there must have been over 40 people but it didn't seem crowded at all!

I will have to order the rose that I want . . and the other plants as well - but I got the shelves and lights for starting seedlings!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks for reminding me. I should pick up some seed starting mix and stratify the delphinium seeds so they get started and nice and big for spring. I probably have to get some new grow lights too. I bet the stores don't even have seeds in yet. Got the Burpee catalog today though. A little bedtime reading, when I'm tired of dreaming of playing with yarn (the winter hobby).
Which rose do you want? I got the Heirloom catalog a while ago, and David Austin...if I had a bigger yard, I'd buy them all!

Hi Deb!!!! gosh if we did not leave so close I bet we would see each other more often!!!

things are ok... I am back at Regis College for the Masters in Nursing and it's going to be a busy semester... the worse is that I am going to take classes this coming Spring and Summer... oh it hurts...

big hug for the girls!!! and of course a kiss for the gorgeous dogs...

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

84 days until Spring.

I wonder which one of us will have the first green shoots? Shall we hold a lottery?

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Thanks for keeping the count going guys! I think I'll invent a Spring "advent" calendar - one of those kinds with the little doors that open. Except in mine, I'll have a different seed packet for every day!

Candyce, I know I won't win - I'm always the last in town to sprout.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

That's a great idea for a calendar!! I just might do something like that (when I find some free time of course!)

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Sue, how come we are so close but still one zone apart... that's so odd... things sprout late in my garden... I never understand why... the rest of framingham has tulips and the few I have take forever to come up....
