lol...Africa is full of creepy crawlies....one of the most inspiring sites is watching the Driver (army) ants on the move...something else...the soldiers spread them selves out for about a 4 foot radious on each side of the main ant path with their jaws pointed straight into the air to clamp anything that gets near the main ant road...then more soldiers form a living dome over the moving ants...and inside is a fast stream of millions of ants...I can watch them for hours.
Play hookey,Tropical Gardening(3)
did you ask Cat what sort of leaves it might eat?
I found a few sources suggesting oak, rose, ixora, and several folks chimed in with azalea and wisteria. It didn't eat anything, I'm hoping he's ready to cocoon. Here's his saga:

I've seen those ants on Discovery Channel, scary and fascinating at the same time!
oh wow...fascinating..very spiny fella...
I was fortunate enough to see a couple of posts on DG a while back of people who unfortunately got stung by the saddleback caterpillars. I think gingers were a common plants for them to be on. Luckily I saw these spines and remembered the sting!
I didn't think to offer him ginger, maybe he's picky. Or prickly. Whatever.
What's with all the creepy crawly talk? Cathy, I love Ixora, they are so faithful, just blooming away...I have several, including a giant red that I got to put in Plant Files cuz there wasn't one...that was cool for me.
Creepy talk cause we are creepy people tonight. lol
Ixora...we used to suck the nectar out of those teeny flowers...memories...
Nifty Shari! I'll have to go look at it. They are super dependable, great "bones" for the garden structure.
Jaye, I'll have to try that tomorrow! I may have to fight off the bees tho...
Oooh Cathy, don't do that..just liquify some sugar...that's what it tastes like!
Used to do that to honeysuckle when I was a kid, these days I don't munch much in the garden, but I do crush leaves between my fingers to smell all the wondermous of it all!
Another one of those great words...wondermous. Oh I love it.
Speaking of food and ants, you know there full of protein????????
And they secrete a fluid that is like glue, and can lift a 100 times there own weight!!!!
"Wondermous" such a blessed word!!
Tman, yes, in some countries roasted ants are part of their diet. My grandmother told me of eating locust in Egypt. Either that or starve.
Jaye, you have led such an exciting life. My roots for the last 200 years are all within 200 miles or less. Texas settlers from Tennessee and Missouri. Who knows what or where before. Mostly Scotch-Irish and a lot of more mutt. hahaha.
Christi
I was 'Godless' then Christi...now more joyous!!!! Lolol.
I'm sure you'd agree with me there's no better home than great Ole U.S.A! By the way 99 percent of us are mutts. Give me a pure race..he or she is on the way to extinction!
As we are His creation, it is of no importance. So glad to have you as my sister.
Christi
Well now we've discuused the family tree, whats for breakfast?????
Overslept this morning!!!!!
Good for you, Don. Almost time to go back to work and you will those late mornings. DH retired last year and we lllloooovvve our lazy mornings with coffee and paper. Except, I'm usually on the pc.
Well read the paper and eat my cherry turnovers from Pillsbury,if you haven't tried these don't you'll want them every morning!!!
You do this to me everytime TM - it isn't even breakfast time here, you always make me hungry...love those pastries!
Probably one of the strangest (there are a lot) things about me is I don't care for sweets. Now all other carbs...bring it on.
And I don't like pasta's etc! Not at all like the rest of my family!
Chrisit must be to sweet already!!LOL
aaaawwww, now Don. Depends on whether I get my own way or not. hehe
LOL Ain't it that way with all women!!!LOL
Remember when I said we all know who the queen of all really is! such a good one too, with big heart...!
Now Randy, I think I have to interject a bit of a correction here. Christi may be a Queen, but she graciously shares her title with all the rest of us tropiqueens. Each in her own domain, she reigns supreme! And just to be completely clear...though we adore all you mammary challenged, male type beings...we cannot call you "King", that would imply that you could actually get your own way sometimes, and that only happens when it is what we want...so...I dub thee (s) , Knights of the Round Pillows! (oh honey, peel me a grape, please?)
Oh...dissed by the other royal lady of gardens...The Emperess of the South Seas herself!...
Oh my..I'm getting dizzy now thinking of all the royalty!
I kid miss Christi of course..because she is the coolest kid ! I want to be just like her, world hopping, starting conventions, loving life with the sparks that you do Christi.. I framed that photo of you and I ...looking like kids in the sand box!
Hi again to all! I hate to bring up the subject again, but Christi asked to see the picture of me and the snake. Well...I have spent the WHOLE day.....looking through pictures . Went on a nostalgia trip!! And no snake picture!
DH said we took that picture out once to show someone, and it must have gotten waylaid somewhere else. I DID find the negatives...so I can tell you it was real! Wish I could find the picture! Now I will go crazy hunting for it!!
The good news is, I am going to go get some plastic tubs and put all my pictures in one place!! So it did get me moving on that! Thanks Christi.
Watch out Shari...they might hurl pecans at ya!!
Knights of the Round Pillows....lolol! That's way too cute! Tman is our apt. court jester!
It's redneck country here..so someone got to be the 'hoe-queen', then RJ will be the 'rake' !!
You all are just too too much!
Marcy..er...let's talk fried Cheerios instead of snakes!
Come on Patriots!!!!
Oh Yeah, Patriots all the way!!!
I'd munch on some of those fried Cheerios right now...
Now, now kiddies...we must not get into a football war. We love our brother's and sister's in the Garden...and eye black, shoulder pads and helmets just have no place in our peaceful reverie.... (whispering my own joyous Ladainian Tomlinson all the way!!!)....
ooohhhhmmmm ooohhhhmmmm
Well, actually I have been dubed "Queen of Everything" and "Princess of Quite a Lot" at various times. Ah dew tehnd to preefu the title of "Queen" most of awl. (said in a very breathless Marlyn...) I go dew somethin' eyulse and come back and ya'll are talkin' 'bout me. And I loooove it. hehehehe
You're welcome, Marcy. I have my pictures in those plastic under-the-bed things. I made the mistake of looking for something in particular one day last week and was lost in the past for the rest of the day. Wasn't a bad place to be.
I see everyone is having a good time. Good way to spend a Saturday night. Hope I'm not too late for the party.
LouC
Hee hee, had to Google him, so you're a Chargers fan...
Could have used a footbal player to remove the dang tree roots in the way of my planting bed yesterday!
Your wish is my command!
LOL,
We now dub this the Tropical Football fan forum...
I can never keep up with what forum/thread it is anyway. I guess you noticed.
BTW folks...I have to admit...I'm a shameless "Geaux (LSU) Tigers" fan.
Yeah, wait till our sister Chrissy gets on...and she'll redub this the Tropical Soccer Forum!!
Christi...love your Marilyn drawl. I was browsing thru old black and whites this afternoon, and would love to share this old picture of my late parents in their teens.
You are right Christi...the past is not a bad place to be.
They are beautiful children, Jaye. Thank you for sharing them with us.
Christi
