Yes and it also helps keep the greenhouse a little cooler in the summertime,I have a fan over the end of the pond, blowing across it,making the air somewhat cooler in the greenhouse, thinking about putting a mister over the pond this summer, and the fan can blow the mist over the greenhouse making it cooler even more!

Morning all! Been taking in the lovely scenes of your tropical collection, Tman...lovely! Naners in December..
Christi, Erin is soooooo adorable.
I would love to have a pond in my makeshift GH. For now, I'd just daze over a five gallon bucket!! :( But I can boast of a live-in baby frog!
Y'all stay warm now!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Jaye, don't the frogs hibernate there in the winter???
Mine dig themselves in the dirt in the pots in the water!
You guys eat crayfish what about froglegs?????

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

I got a story to tell you on froglegs Tman. Mind if I hog the page a bit?
Back in Singapore, the frog legs served are about 3 inches long and real skinny, but so sweet. Boy do I love them braised in soy sauce and ginger!
Well when I first came to the States, ex brought me to this fancy restaurant in Lafayette. On the menu was fried frog legs, and it said, 2 frog legs. Of course I ordered it, but I told the waitress I wanted a dozen (that's the amount they served in Singapore).
Waitress was taken aback and ex convinced me to try just 2, and if that wasn't enough I could ask for more. Guess what?
When she brought those legs, I literally jumped up and hollered..."They're not frog legs...they're chicken legs!!!"
I refused to have any frog legs since..

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

LOL! I would have loved to have seen your face!!!!LOL
I've had them once, but I'm a beef man and always will be!!!!
Haven't tried crayfish, always used them for catching the big catfish!!!!
Sucking the meat out of the head, just doesn't too much for me!!!LOL
Little squeamish!!!! LOL!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I ONLY EAT fried crawfish and/or crawfish etouffe. Tried that business of the boiled and heads stuff first time when we were at Miss Helen's. Must have to be raised from the cradle on that. Not my cup of tea at all!! Crawfish bisque is a delicacy I could eat everyday.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Thats something we can agree on,!!!!!LOL

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

YUMMMM on the Coconut Crabs!!!! They are getting hard to find in the S. Pacific with all the cruisers... somewhere I have a photo of one...ugly bugger but so delicious!!!

I am told that with plants in the pond the fish can hide.... Also am told that by stringing a clear fishing net over the pond, once a bird gets caught in it, none will visit again.... One other problem is that the Cane Toads get in the water, mate and their eggs get so thick the pond has to be cleaned out...

If it's not one thing it's your mother!!!!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

oh no..you have cane toads there Carol?

Looks like I might have another project now, pond in the green house. I have 2 fans going right now..one hanging from the rafters and one near the ground level. I don't even use it in the summer, it's so hot in there. It becomes a storage shed.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

They are sure plentiful here Carol! This guy was caught on our sister island of Roi-Namur quite a few years ago. The plaque is up in the Cop Station up there. It is over three feet acoss! Didn't get a pic of the one that stole a coconut off my table on the lanai just a few days ago...found the coconut on a chair, neatly opened and cleaned out. Keep away! They can take off a finger or two...but yes, definately good eatin!

How far do you live from the ocean, or are these forrest crabs? (coconut crabs)

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

YUP...Cane Toads!!! Thanks to the Aussies who thought it was funny!!!

That Crab makes my mouth water, Sheri.... !!!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Lord, anything that included coconut in its diet would have to be good eatin'. Have acquired quite an appetite for Alaskan King Crab, any thing like it?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

No Coconut Crabs here...they live close to the sea, especially where the coconut trees are. Their pincers can rip off the husk and break the nut of the coconut.... And the crabs taste sweet with a coconut flavor...VERY rich. Some of the S. pacific islands are banning their capture as they take eons to grow and populations are now very small...and the crabs small sized, too!!!

We caught one, stuck a stick in his hole where he was hiding and we pulled him out. He never let go of the stick and we carried him to the boat, tied the stick on the pushpit and he lived outside for a week, still grabbing that stick!!! Then we ate him!!!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Bet you didn't ate him one claw at a time!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

mmm...sounds tastey...but would give a wide path to anything that can rip a coconut. hmm..wonder if they can be trained!?

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

My house is about mid-island, almost. About two of your size blocks to the lagoon, about 3 or so to the ocean. But to give you an idea...I recently wrote an article about coconuts, and for one part I counted the number of trees I could see just from my chair on the lanai...not turning around or getting up. 86! not counting my own six. So, to answer your question Randy...both. I am close to the sea, but also the crabs like areas with lots of trees...

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

and there's a lagoon too? oh boy..!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

That's not like coming outside after dark and finding a snake is it?

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

No, not really...you can hear the coconut crabs...they are huge! But I don't putter in the garden too much in the dark. too easy to trip on a root or walk into a spider web. Yuuuuuck!!

Yep, Randy - world's largest lagoon. I kid you not my friend!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Never asked before...do you have snakes on Kwaj? I am terrified of snakes so guess that is why I dwell on them. Have I heard there are no snakes in Hawaii?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

wooo hoooo! That's definately cool...pencil me in for another day...lol

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Randy, can we go together?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Why sure...

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Any of you had alligator? lol. Have had it twice. Once a coworker got some from a friend in Florida and had me try it. It was good. The last time was at our Central States RU and tetelytuna couldn't resist getting some for us. Everyone pretty much loved them. LOL

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

If I could ever leave DG long enough I would check the passport thing. Walgreens has a sign on the marquee today that says they do Passport Photos. hhhmmm.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey, Pep. Had it one time at Landry's Seafood. So long ago don't remember much about it except it was reaaallly expensive on the menu. Several of us shared the expense.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Nope...no snakes here. That's one of the reasons I love it!!! If we had this kind of bush to crash thru anywhere with snakes I would stay in bed!!!!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

That sounds reasonable, Carol. Hate to admit it but I am afraid of grass snakes. They are all cobras as far as I am concerned.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

We only have two kind of snakes...one is a sea snake...very, very rare. and the other is a very tiny black, blind snake that looks like a worm and lives in the few areas where there is dirt. Neither should give you a thing to worry about my friend.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

ok

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

That was the meekest, mildest "ok" I've ever seen! You can do better than that!

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

I was thinking the same thing. :~)

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Never have a lot to say about *snakes*.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL...I've pulled a cobra out of the hole in our cement fence before...They really are more afraid of you, except this one was ticked off enough to spit at me..

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

In Africa...

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

A friend of mine is in Durban right now and he had a cobra come up to their vehicle and cover it in venom. He said he was glad he was in the car and not outside.

Christi, that isn't meant to scare you cause this is in South Africa, their native habitat. Unless you go there you have nothing to worry about. :~)

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Can you imagine my HORROR seeing an 11 foot cobra in the middle of the road in the Philippines in February....no where to run, no where to hide.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Just remember LOUC,red on black friend of Jack, red on yellow kill a fellow!!!!
I heard the brown snake has over taken Guam and there are very poisonous,so if you stop there don't get off the plane!!!LOL

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Ok, I forgot about those places. I know there are others too. lol
