Supermarket Bulbs?

(Zone 9a)

growgirl59,

For that mango seed I have two words for you - PLASTIC BAG. :)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I grew a pineapple top but if mine was typical, let me warn you, it had long, sharp stiff leaves and was not a friendly houseplant because of that, and needed space about 2 feet by 2 feet or more.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Quoting:
I refer to them as pumpkins as it reminds me not to expect adult behavior nor reasoning from my children. Children are prone to childish behavior that requires correction, training but seldom severe pruning! ;0)

Until those children are teenagers and then all bets are off! LOL

HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLP
He got me some ginger root today and they are huge! What do I do now??????????
PLEASE, PLEASE HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPP ♦♣☺

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

He also got me some horseradish if you have ideas on that one, too??? ☺

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Horseradish can be invasive, so plant it off to itself or it can be grown in containers. Soil needs to be well drained and rich in organic matter. Set plants or roots 9 to 18 inches apart, with the crown (the top of the root and the start of the top growth) about 4 inches below the soil surface, and water thoroughly. Dig horseradish roots anytime from midsummer on, but for best flavor wait until after the first frosts.
Ginger root I can't help you with.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Well that was a wealth of information Doc, thanks! I think I will be planting it in pots as I don't like horseradish and I think he is the only one who does! LOL I told him I would try it for him! :) This thing is huge, I hope you can see how huge! I gotta figure out how big a pot I need!

Here is the Ginger. The guy at Wal-Mart had no clue what Taro Root was, so I guess I will have to check our podunk local super market! LOL

Good grief you can supply at least half the US with that horseradish root, it's huge! Did he feed it drugs or small children?

I think it was fed steroids and children! LOL I pulled that out of the bag and I know my mouth had to drop! LOL
I am hoping the ginger can be broke up to make a whole bunch! :)

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

I know enough about the ginger that yes you can do that. Dear Lord, I want to KNOW what he was feeding that horseradish! I want some for my tomatoes!! LOL

But I did find this site about planting ginger! http://www.ehow.com/how_318_grow-ginger.html

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks for that link! That was a lot of information that I needed to know before doing the planting. :) And the horseradish is just over 11 inches long!

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

I wonder, are there world records for huge horseradish roots?

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

LOL I just found the receipt for it and there should be! LOL He better REALLY like horseradish! The ginger didn't cost much at all, and I can get more than one plant from each of them, I think?

Hello All!!
This is a great thread. Here is a champagne mango pit just sprouting...I split the side a bit before planting took about 2 weeks with bottom heat and a plastic bag . :)

That horseradish could be used to hurt someone, haha!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Great pic kimarj! I will do that one some day, too and hope I get good results! I love how this thread has turned out, too! Lots of information for such a wee little brain, though! ☺
Cat, you are right, that thing is heavy! I just hope no one looks at it in the wrong sense! LOL

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Cathy and Misty...wait till you make some..that's when the hurt hits. Do it outside, get an old fashioned grinder and be prepared cause it don't smell pretty. It's like onions to the 10th power. The finished produce is excellent.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

NOPE, DH wanted it, I will grow it, the rest is up to him! LOL

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Thanks Misty!
That root is some powerful stuff!!!!
I planted papaya seed also, it has not sprouted yet.

I guess my next investment is a heat mat! I think I had mango once or twice and it was awesome, but for the money there was nothing there! I am gonna get my bell pepper seeds planted soon to see how they do. I wonder what kiwi would turn out like, if at all? I love kiwi with strawberries, and I hope to have lots of little strawberries next year! My strawberry plants are still green even!

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Hey Misty I read you are to dry kiwi seed then chill them 4 weeks before planting.
I planted male and female hardy kiwi vines last spring ...no fruit yet.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

I still don't understand the difference between male and female in plants????

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Most plants have male and female flower parts all on one plant so you don't need to think about it, but there are a few kinds out there where the male and female flowers occur on different plants, so if you are growing those and you want to get fruits, you need to have both male and female or else you won't get fruit (only the female plant will bear fruit, but it needs the male plant nearby to pollinate its flowers so that fruit will form)

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

doccat said Until those children are teenagers and then all bets are off! LOL
truer words... its a crap shoot I tell ya !

LOL Doccat and Sally!! ~ I can already see that I will be seeking an advanced degree in lion taming design and techniques for the boy pumpkin whose strong will lion loudly roars from time to time. Then maybe I can call him my grape as vining husbandry and severe pruning will be needed.

St. Louis County, MO(Zone 5a)

Not to mention stomping now and then, lol. I am so glad my kids are in their 20's now and human again. There is hope!

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Same here, once they hit 20, the real kid reappeared. I also suggest a nice weighted ball bat at an attention getter!

St. Louis County, MO(Zone 5a)

And a box of heavy duty trash bags for luggage when they need to move out!

BTW, my 18 year old niece says you have to give two weeks notice before you can kick your kid out of your house. I couldn't stop laughing.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

kimarj, how do you determine the sex on the kiwi plants? I'd like to try that as we love the fruit, but I didn't think it was cold hardy enough to survive here. Your farther north than I am...........woohoo! Just picked up a couple today on sale..how good can it get...and 3 more amaryllis on sale at 3.95 each. They are sprouting and the clerk, god love her, was very upset that I should be taking these "growing" bulbs like that even on sale. She called the manager over and he knocked another $1.00 off. I was a naughty girl, I said thank you and hauled freight!

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

LOL on the Amaryllis! I got my last one for $1.99 in the kit, but bought a pretty pot to plant it in, too! Good thing since the cheapo plastic pot was broke anyway.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Well, I suppose I should feel guilty since I know better, but I don't. Shame on me..........LOL

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

I would feel no shame whatsoever! LOL I got out of Lowe's once with a pot full of free plants cause there wasn't a bar code! It was on clearance for $5, but most have since died. ☺I still have the parlor palm and I think an AV, so I cannot complain! LOL

Yes indeed! LOL!!....I can already see that stomping the grape is going to leave me with more than a few stains on my feet and all over the house!!

A neighbor's 19 year old son just plays X-box, eats and sleeps since HS graduation last May, supposedly he's still "deciding his options" He's not sure if he wants to become a marine or go to vocational school? She says they'll give him a break for a year and then they don't know what they'll do. I can only imagine the frustration. Maybe I'll tell the bright side is that he 'll be "human" again in another year! ;

St. Louis County, MO(Zone 5a)

Hate to tell you, if neighbor's kid is a veggie now, time has stopped and he won't be normal for a long time. Give her the black heavy duty trash bags and tell her to set a date, sooner rather than later. There is still time to get into tech school 2nd semester. I'll send her steel toed boots if she would like a pair, lol. He'd better start exercising if he wants to live through boot camp. Run boy, run! I'd call the recruiter and have him come by during the day when veggie is on the couch. Deciding his options, pfffffttt!

That sounded very harsh, not my usual style. c4

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

Ditto on that one Cathy...not harsh...welcome to the real world. sheesh... I think we've given these kids way too much and they don't appreciate what they haven't had to earn. Reality comes as a terrible shock.

St. Louis County, MO(Zone 5a)

Back to the thread (sorry Misty), I bought my SIL garlic bulbs today for Christmas. He's a great jokester, so he's getting back what he dishes out! I wonder if I have a pot....I could plant them.

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

It is ok, Cat! Garlic, now that sounds like something I would enjoy getting for Christmas! HA HA HA

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7b)

I don't see why you can't pot some up and make a braid with the rest. Most of use would be thrilled at such a thoughtful gift. LOL But then we have a little different world view.........

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

DH said that horseradish was the smallest one they had! I would hate to see the largest one!
Happy Holidays Everyone! :)
