Play hookey, and tropical gardening in the greenhouse!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Since you asked..trekked out there in the cold...good thing anyway, temp. dipped in the 60's in the GH. So here's Portadora, and this is the sacrifice Kel made so I could have some form of haven for my few tropics.

Our humble makeshift is truly my Christmas present!!! Here'a a baby leaf, I would say about 3 ft. What say you, TM?

A couple of staghorn ferns. Got them in 4 inch pots a month ago...fast grower.

This is a Philodendron. It is smuggled from Cambodia! Considered a holy plant and the flowers look like those of the Peace lily.
"Aglaonema Modestum". This multiplies so easily.

One of its' babies making babies. Hallelujah!

Not willing to risk newly acquired daylilies from eBay, so had them in pots. This 3 tiered heavy duty, plastic coated rack was salvaged from behind Lowe's! Amazing! Lowe's employees can't bring home the store's discards! Our luck!
I'll have room for the 'naners'.

Jennie (BHM), like you, I enjoy other garden tours! I don't have much to show now, but the few I have, I enjoy fussing over. My list is getting longer and longer each day. If I don't have meds to worry about, I'll be broke over plants!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yep at least 3ft!!!
Really a big plant you have there!
Come spring heaven would love to trade for one of your babies, love plants with heart shaped leaves!

I know about pricey meds!!!
We get ours thru the mail, every 90 days, even with a prescription plan card thru the insurance,I pay right at $700.00 every 90 days, for Pattis and my pills!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

You got it TMan. I don't have any insurance at all. Mine's that much each month! Perhaps we should invade Canada!!!
This is the view I would like to have come spring! Peach hedychium...want some?
Edited: Much more fragrant than the white butterly ginger too. Certainly a butterfly and moth magnet.

Each Month!! Wow!

Sure,I have the yellow and white in the ground, covered with mulch,I hope they came back, there actually from your state, got them from a guy here in town, who knows and does business with the owner of Plants Delight!
I'm interested in all the hardy tropicals I can get my hands on,due to age and health, not sure how much longer I can keep digging and repotting all these tropicals and hauling them inside the greenhouses!!!LOL

A lot of the meds we get are generic, they say there the same as the brand names, don't know whether thats true or not,but it's a lot cheaper for me!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

As tall as the house! Grown in full sun!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Were a zone apart,I'm zone 7,but will plant it next to the house or sidewalk, and heavy mulch it.
Gorgeous!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

How about some Hidden Gingers? Curcumas. I only buy from Stokes, a habit since living in Louisiana. I love their formulated plant food.
Those hedychiums and curcumas were transplanted here. None of my Costus Barbatus survived. Alpinias refused to bloom :( Still I try to play God!!

Take care Christi. Be safe.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Hurry back!

Tried the hidden gingers from nice lady from Gulf coast of Mississippi few years back, they didn't bloom, and they didn't come back,I didn't mulch back then, for she told me they were hardy and come back, now I've learned to mulch everything!!!!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

TMan, these are indeed hardy. I planted them kinda shallow, but do heavily mulch.
Also grown in full sun. The only shade I have are from 2 oak trees that I use for growing hostas. Gingers are finicky, first year they feed, 2nd year they sleep, 3rd year, blooms. I was lucky with my hedychiums, bloom first year.
OK...if you don't mind planting, I don't mind sharing.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

No not at all,Hmm full sun for gingers??
Mine would get brown edges just in the morning sun, during the summer time!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Mine do that, but that's when the watering's neglected a bit! :( Also, I am sure you're aware of the humidity requirement. I flood them once in a while.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Always very humid here!!!
And they way I plant my jungle, lots of humidity!

We got the 3 inches today. Nice big fat flakes came down. Roads are a mess though not as bad as they could be. This is out first major snow of the season so people have to learn to drive again.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Great pictures TM! Enjoyed the tour of your garden once again!!!!!

Jaye, you have Dmail!

Pepper, I'd definately have to be learning to drive all over....I haven't driven in snow in YEARS!

Pep,lookout more coming said the weatherman ,might be ice this time!
Man I hate driving in snow!!!!!
Thanks Tgal77

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Good for you Tman. You're on vacation and don't have to go out if you don't want to. Be careful Pepper, wouldn't want you to get hurt.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I drive real slow when it's icey out,and people scare me cause they all want to pass me!!!!

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

I go slow too and hate it when people pass me.

Not looking forwards to the ice if we get it. Makes it harder to get around at work and going home.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Just got a d-mail from Braveheartsmom. I don't keep up with the news and apparently Hawaiia, at least Kihei, Maui is under seige of the weather as well. She has lost a lot of her garden to a super wind/rain storm and it has rained so hard the roof leaked in her newly painted room. They have been without electricity and water for two days. Power back on but she doesn't know for how long. Even Paradise is treacherous. Still much of the island with no power and the storm appears to be turning around and coming back for another hit. Pray for all these people. Christi

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yes I heard, but I didn't think it was still raining there.
I hope she is alright.
Seems like the Pacific and the Pacific Northwest are getting hit hard this winter!
And actually winter hasn't even started yet!!!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

She has started a thread: Huge storm in the islands. Has been updating when the electricity is on. Under Tropical Gardening Forum.

G'day everyone ...snow? ice? and tropical storms ...we are having thunderstorms almost every day ...one poor woman was killed running to her car in a car park ...struck by lightening. A man was killed yesterday as a shop awning fell and crushed him,our power keeps going poof ...I have never seen anything like this before.
I think I remember everyone complaining about the wet Summer in Texas last year ...I am finding it very interesting to see what is enjoying these conditions in the garden,my rainforest type stuff is going nuts! the normally brown fields are so green it hurts your eyes. For years we have been watching bushfire at this time of year, not floods.
I really feel for those of you who must drive in snow and ice, I would be scared because you don't have full control over the vehicle, very dangerous.
How are the greenhouse babies going ?...it must be a constant worry trying to keep everything happy.
I love all those lush green leaves, if this weather keeps up ...I won't have to pretend I am living in the tropics because right now I am.
Take care everyone everywhere ...be safe :)
6.30 in the morning Saturday at 80F humidity 97%.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

OOOOOH, So sorry to hear about Jen's damage! Chrissy try to stay in if you can!!!! I am so glad that you are not having to worry about the brush fires, that's answered prayer, but sure did not want you to get flooded either!!!!! Do take care of yourself and your family!

All of those of you with ice, do be carefull also!!! It really can be treacherous if you into a spin. I'm sure know that from previous experience.

It is rather humid here, but a gorgeous day! "Tut Tut, Looks like Rain!!!! " So will hold off watering except under the canopy. It is so warm here!!!! Amazing!!!!

Christi is it a little cooler there?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Last night I watched that show called day after tomorrow, with Dennis Quaid, about the weather going arye every where!!
Tornadoes in Los Angles,New york under a typhoon and then a freezing ice storm!!!!

All these strange things happening is how the show started!!! Scary!!!
Thanks Lucy will check her thread out!

Now too much worrying as long as the heaters don't stop working,or a huge junk of falling ice doesn't rip a hole in the roof!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Just got back from a long road trip. It was cold and the sun's rays could not penetrate the clouds.. The whole time it seems like a blanket of smog's following us!
As I'm reading your posts...I beg of all of you...please be safe. Just found such a nice bunch of folks with a resident comic and I want to read more from y'all!
Rather a huge junk of ice rip your gh, Tman, then hearing it's you that it's after!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

It is unbelievably hot here. 81 degrees here today and tomorrow.
Sunday is supposed to start dropping to the forties. That is still not normal. The butterflies think it is August. Everything is still putting out new growth. I'm worried about Jen. Gives me a sick feeling in my stomach. Still no word from Shari. Who knows what is happening on Kwajlein. Anxiety builds when my family is in danger.

LouC

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Were having freezing drizzle here,I'm afraid it's really going to get nasty the next few days, first some more ice than snow ,ending by Wednesday.
LouC wow your really having some nice weather!!!

Jaye, wondered where you ran off today!!!LOL
Glad your okay!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Christi, you have Darling-mail!
Tman, it's impossible to stay away from y'all for too long!!! I get my Chinese groceries in Charlotte, and while there, of course I hunted for some plant sales! No luck!!
I showed Kel your rice paper plant, he said to start sowing the rice I purchased!! I told him it's not the same rice plant. Moreover I bought "jasmine" scented rice. He said "There you go..you've always wanted more Asian Jasmines!"
Men.....

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Sounds like "another comedian" now in the family! LOL! I'd love to have one of those Rice Plants!

Hopefully Shari is home by now, but they may be having storms as well. If not her little granddaughter may have got a hold and decided not to let go:!!! Plus getting reaquainted with her two cats!!! I'm sure she is very busy!!!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Any news.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Jaye,
I have a kind lady that comes and brings me dishes from her native land, border of Laos
and Cambodia, and she just purchased 16 acres of land east of town, and is going to grow
what she calls Mountain rice and it will be ready from seed to harvest in just 90 days, she makes a great sticky rice, along with shrimp she brings me for giving her lots of plants that she uses for cooking and medicinal .
She even brought wrapped in the banana leaves that she took, when I cut them off to bring them in for overwintering,it was great!

Was Shari suppose to be home before Xmas?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Shari was supposed to be back on Kwaj on the 6th. Carol has posted about them all being in the storm. I think that is on the thread, *huge tropical storm* or such. It is already the 8th on Kwaj.
