Play hookey, and tropical gardening in the greenhouse!

Ha ha ha ...we are still here and from what I am hearing at the moment it seems to be raining everywhere and that's a good thing.
h I was discussing the edible but smelly nuts from the ginko ...mine is a male tree so I won't get those ...I wonder if you have ever tasted them ...being an Asian treat.
About the snakes they like to try and come inside when it is very wet like this, so we have to make sure the doors are always shut ...the last one we found was right inside the garage ...having slithered under the roller door ...almost stepped on it! it's a wonder you didn't hear the scream all the way from down here :) Well It's getting late almost 11.30 Monday night better wander off ...
nighty night!

The weather has gone mad.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Completely Christi!! It's now in the high 70's and raining. Will be confusing the garden!
Chrissy, yes we use those 'nuts' in desserts. Boil them with rock sugar. Supposed to be healthy. The male leaves are also different from the female. In Singapore, some streets are lined with Ginkgo trees.
I do have garden snakes slithering around here. My cat always gets them!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

We had a high of 81 yesterday, broke records. This morning it is 36. Supposed to be high of 72 by tomorrow. The plants can't go dormant and therefore when we get an overnight freeze they are really burned badly.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Mornin all!!!!
Chrissy first time I've seen a BOP seed, what insect pollinates it?
Mine only blooms during the winter time, and nothing in the greenhouse to pollinate it!
26* here this morning, heavy frost on the pumpkins!!!!
Hi today 52*,tomorrow 63*,might be able to get some clean up outside done,in the dead looking jungle!
Here's whats happening in the greenhouse today, enjoy!

Chrissy help!!!
My Aussie fern,is getting brown edges, and you can see it's over the pond,so humidity is not a problem, and I keep the crown watered just about everyday, the soil is always moist, temperature 68* at nite and usually 82* during the day, plenty of sunshine, well indirect sunshine,as you can see nice and bright where it's sitting, any suggestions???

Randy can probably help with the oz fern. His is growing like a weed.

Don, have to say you have disproved the saying: You can't fool Mother Nature.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Great pictures!!!! Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Thanks
But fooling mother nature, only last for a few months, then I need her to take over when I move them back outside for to take care of!!!
Kind of like a marriage with her,or should I say a divorce,I get the kids thru the winter and
she gets them thru the summer!!!LOL

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Wow!!! Beautiful pictures!! All that hard work pays, TM! And this is just a fraction of your 500 somewhat plants!!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Obviously it is an amicable arrangement because they are thriving, inside or out.
All that TLC by TM

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Yep, I agree with Christi...sounds more like a good marriage, TM.

Hi everyone and TM ...I am no expert but if the fern were mine I would give it a little shade as they are an understorey plant that grow naturally in gullies.Australian plants are a bit touchy re any fertilizer ...generally only a weak solution of seaweed tonic as per directions is enough ...good luck with it (by the way the roots like to be cool, so you might like to stick the pot into a larger pot ...fill the gap between with pine chips or something like that ,this insulates against overheated roots/cold conditions etc.)
The pictures as usual are just lovely I suspect getting up close and personal with your beloved plants is a really nice way to spend the Winter ...although I don't envy you all that work ...we gardeners will do just about anything to save and nurture our plants ...just like we do with those we love ...the reward? it's priceless!
About the Strelizia seeds I am not sure how they get pollinated ...we have such a variety of bugs and critters that anything is possible ...
I don't know if it is because I don't use any non organic things in the garden or not, but everything gets pollinated ...although I do tend to lend mother nature a hand sometimes if I am counting on a fruit or veg because sometimes the weather may distrupt the natural ways.
Well it is still wet and grey ...and only 78F today ... though it is 8.45 Tues morning. Enjoy your day /evening/arvo etc everyone everywhere :)

About 20 mins ago LouC :) ha ha ha isn't it funny.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

No wonder we have a hard time being on at the same time. You are busily getting your morning chores done while we are preparing dinner and winding down for the evening. By the time you are ready to hit the pc, I am sawing logs. hahahaha But we seem to manage ok.
Right? Mate?

Sure do mate :) off to sieze the day now bye for now ...enjoy your evening everyone!
chrissy :)

Rest well Chrissy!

Good marriage it is then!!!
Okay, now can I just use orchid bark on the aussie fern,or does it need the soil?
I bought some cactus and fruit tree potting mix,or would that work better?
Just looked at my seeds, and wow,got 9 pink banana seeds just germinated, anyone have any experience growing the pink bananas,I've seen pics, there so cute those little pink bananas!!!
But here's a pic of the newest addition to the family!!!
Sitting on top of my brand new recliner!!
Had to put throw blankets and quilts and sheets on ever thing until we get her front claws removed when she gets 6 months of age,she sets up there so she can eyeball to eyeball with spike!!!!
This room is my gardening room attached to the biggest greenhouse, and also my computer room.

Spike looking at me,and saying why did you let this little kitty in my garden room!!!
He keeps calling Sadie the cat, come here, come here!!!
He can reach about 4 inches outside the cage with his foot and claws, and wouldn't surprise me,if he might grab hold and not let go!

Spike must appear appetizing to Sadie.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Pink bananas, how neat! In the spring I'll trade you a regular baby banana sprout for a pink banana seedling!!!! We only have 106 banana trees now!! I think I could spare a couple. LOL

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

T77!!! You can't stop at 106!! LOL....
BTW TM, I ordered Praying Hands too.
Edited: Question..does anyone try growing Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang)?

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh come spring I'm sure there'll be even more!!!!!!! Each time one bears fruit it dies, so they do take care of some themselves.....Last spring we had 80, and now 106....so you can see how fast they are growing!!!!!!!!! Fortunately I love them, but eventually we will have to do something!!!!

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

T77 you have the perfect climate for them. Will you be selling yours online?

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

What a lovely ball of fur Sadie is, I expect Spike is a little put out having to share attention!

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Probably more like trading them heaven.....

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Praying Hands, tried that one didn't make it thru the winter under the crawl space, sad because it was a huge one too!

Sadie right now would be no match for spike, and maybe even after she grows up!
Spike can eat a 2x4 up like ,in a week look like a tooth pick!!!LOL

His cage is right behind my computer, and I talk to him all the time, and he talks back all the time, especially when I have food!!! LOL
