Aloha and welcome heavenscape, so glad you joined us.
Don and Chrissy, glad to have you both back - and in such rare form! I am with Don, there would be no barefoot mowing for me in Oz, what with the funnel webs and snakes.
Glad to read that you are taking a month off Don, time to play in the greenhouse!
Play hookey, and tropical gardening in the greenhouse!
Mahalo, Bravesheartmom!
Ha ha ha not barefoot but in slaps! (I think you might call them slides) I know I should wear boots but it gets too darned hot! my feet slip all over in boots so I take the risk with my footwear and just have my old slaps for mowing ...when the grass is so wet the mower keeps cutting out and you have to pull the thingy again to restart it ...all the while praying that the wasps don't notice you and that the spiders can't get you before you get going again.
My hubby offers to do it but he does everything in such a hurry that has killed many of my prize things over the years ...no way I do it!
Makes you feel good after you have finished but yes the green juice from the grass is very hard to shift ...funny how you get visitors when you have green toes it is a bit embarrassing :)
Well everyone the storm is coming ...so steamy tonight whew! I bet everything has grown a foot by the morning (don't really mind when it is the passionfruit) not so happy when it is the %$#*^ weeds
See if I can take some pics tomorrow ...take care everyone!
The frogs are all going off their nuts so we are in for a big one!
Now where is the torch? just in case we lose the power again.
Ok time to go, a warning on the radio again take care and keep warm or cool whatever you need :)
chrissy
Oh wonderful, another islander.
Aloha,
Kilikina
Slides???
flip flops,or the original THong!!!!LOL
Chrissy are you getting more storms than usual there?
Is this a la nina year there also?
Hmm I think that starts in the Atlantic not the pacific, some body step in here and correct me,for I think I'm over my head here!!!LOL
I believe both El Nino and La Nina start in the Pacific. In Hawaii El Nino brings us dry weather and La Nina brings us wet weather during the winter. Our weather forcasters are hoping for a La Nina this year because we have been so very dry for quite a few years now, funny to think of drought conditions when you live on an island surrounded by water.
Is the wet weather you have been having typical Chrissy? Does La Nina affect you the same way as it does in Hawaii?
Where did you spend your childhood Heaven? My guess is one of the Hawaiian Isles. Inquiring minds want to know!!!
Aloha
Jenny
Lol @ original "thongs"! Chrissy- praying for your safety here.
Jenny and LouC, I am an islander, but from the island of Singapore. That teeny little dot at the tip of peninsula Malaysia with 4 million people!! There's some Polynesian ancestry being part Indonesian too. So "Aloha" to my distant cousins!!
Goodness, didn't know that Hawaii is undergoing drought like Australia!
Got to count my blessings that here we do have get light showers now and then!
'O Jaye ko'u inoa. (that's it..my limited Hawaiian)
For the rest of the "mainlanders"...my name is Jaye!
Oh Singapore, how lovely! You are a welcome addition to our forum, Jaye, we are so glad you joined us. You must tell us all about Singapore - my parents were stationed there ( and in Malaysia) just after the war, and talked about what a lovely place it was.
Warmest Aloha!
J
Jaye, one of our loyal DG friends is currently off her island of Kwajlein in the Marshall Islands. Goes by the screen name IslandShari. I had the pleasure of meeting her when she changed planes in Houston. She doesn't have pc access so we have been missing her a lot. If you would like some more catching up with this crew...go to Tropical Gardening forum, A RED LETTER DAY IN HOUSTON. We had a great time. That is what spurred the need for a convention. And please do tell us of what it is like in Sinapore for real people, not what the travelogue depicts.
Christi
Christi, I am green with envy!!! You get to meet the great, DGer reknowned RJ????
Yes, I read his postings and covet his plants and truly believe that he "witchcraft" his plants!!!! He kept giving credit to a nursery in Houston that supplies his plant food. Sheeshh....I'm not born yesterday! Since you've been to the Opryland and compared his to that (been there too)...then it only confirmed my belief that it's witchcraft!!! No doubt about it!!
Okay that envy's out of the bag.
I agree with you. There should be a national convention. The only fun convention I had been to was a quilting one in Houston! It will be fun!
Truth about Singapore in a nutshell? An island paradise with very strict laws (remember the kid that got caned for spray painting a car?), a safe harbor with 365 days of 80 degrees weather, 110% humidity and all the tropical flora, fauna and vegetations you can find. Placed on a crossroad of South East Asia, the islanders' national pastime is food!!!
English is your main language there...(British influence) with other native dialects, like Malay, Chinese and Tamil. The only drawback is that, it is one of the most expensive places to visit!!!! But you will never be lost there. Islanders are a natural bunch of very friendly people.
Hey!! DGers must be islanders then!! Oh yeah, Christi...d-mail RJ please. Tell him to read this post. Don't want others to think that I talk of people behind their backs! :-D
OK...Tropicman, Raja Puri will be acquired from my fav. tropical nursery, Stokes.
Hi everyone! ...about the rain ...no this is very very unusual ...we have been in terrible drought for years, we have had water restrictions for the last three years and this rain has been a real blessing.Unfortunately it does not appear to be all over Australia ...mostly in the Easter side which gets the most rain any way. While mowing yesterday I felt the sun burning my face ...a bit scary for so early in the day ...you mow early because besides the heat if you leave it till later it could be a bit scary re snakes. I was reading an article today that says Australia really is a sunburnt country in fact it is THE sunburnt country it showed a solor map taken from space I don't know if it will come up but I will post it and see what happens. We have the highest skin cancer in the World and no wonder.
We would love to hear about Singapore h :)
Don't you just love that everyone from everywhere can just pop in to say hello?
Chrissy, some rain is good rain even for only selected areas. You're okay then?
My FIL has skin cancer. He was always working in the sun with no protection.
Australia having the highest rate of skin cancer..that's a surprise. But then regard this next few lines.
You asked me whether it's a malady in Singapore too, being a tropical c'try and such. Well, not really. Asians and some ethnics are born with certain pigments in their skin that's different from the Caucasions. Guess that's one way to protect the natives against the sun's radiation! Or is it that's why we tan easily! So it's actually race based.
Slather yourself with protection Chrissy.
Drats...apologies all around. I hope I don't sound racist when I try to explain why skin cancer's a rarity with the darker complexioned (sic?) folks. Putting it politely, we are born with natural sunscreen !! On the minus side, vain me had wanted to do a demabrasion eons ago, and my dermatologist said my skin pigment won't allow it!
Sorry if I had offended anyone. I truly love my chair in the corner!
That is one crazy cat!
Admiring the beautiful flora here, thankyou!
Pepper, now if you could just teach him to turn around the other way,and hold the newspaper!!!!! LOL
Heaven ,Stokes is where I got my Raja Puri, good stuff there!
Chrissy is most your heat due to the humidity, compared to the sun?
I wonder if the sun rays have found a nice size hole in the ozone over Australia????
Funny BH,like your a island surrounded by water, would make one to think all that water
got there from a lot of rain!!!??
heaven, you can't possibly offend anyone here. We are always trying to learn more about our brothers and sisters. We love you dearly already. Pray tell us more.
Jaye, I wish I had some of that natural sunscreen!!!!! I don't burn as bad as I used to, but when I was young I would usually burn long before I tanned!!!!!!!
TM, what are you going to do with a month off? Take Patti on a nice vacation, did you say? FiJi? I bet she would thoroughly enjoy a tropical getaway somewhere!!!!
RJ....witchcraft? Nah......he loves his plants way too much for any hoodoo.....He just treats them right!!!!!! (However, when I go out into my garden tomorrow....I'll ask a couple of them if they care to share any of his secrets......) LOL!!!
Aloha everyone else!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tg77,
I think I will sleep for a week at least!!!LOL
No,I have to put the garden to bed, lots of pruning to do,get out the chipper and shredder, get my compost beds started, with a sunroom and 3 greenhouses full of plants, more than 5oo but less than a thousand, will keep me busy for a while!!!
Were pretty much home bodies, with 5 parrots two cats to take care of,keeps us busy.
Everybody, have a good day,and let the sunshine on you for a little extra Vitamin D
Pepper, love Curly's habit! I have a greatdane named Braveheart and he likes to get his "fresh" water that way too, only he slobbers all over the floor, not as dainty as Curly! LOL!
Jaye, I have a little of the natural sunscreen too - my great grandmother was Spanish (from the Argentine) and I have inherited some of the melanin, so I rarely burn in the sun but tan very easily. No fair English rose here! I never go to the beach without sunscreen however, although I do confess to being stupid and rarely wearing it while gardening. My poor husband comes from Irish stock with the red (not now!) hair and freckles, which is not a good combination for life in Hawaii. It has taken him years to build up a tan, and he practically bathes in sunscreen lotion before we go into the sun. He also always wears the rash guard shirts that have an SPF of 50, which I think were invented in Australia, weren't they Chrissy?
Don, sounds like you are going to be pretty busy on your month off. Lovely way to spend it though, among your plants in the greenhouse. I expect you will be as happy as a lark! LOL! I can't imagine looking after so many plants - that's hard work!
BH,
Compared to my regular job, taking care of that many plants,is like a walk in the park!!!LOL
I don't burn easily either but I am out in the sun enough that in the summer when I'm not covering myself up I wear SPF 50 sunscreen. I still get the tan but not the burn and damage. Sometimes I wonder if it works though when I feel the sun on my ear and it feels like it's on fire!! lol
Thanks Christi!
Pepper, you should video Curly doing that and post it on Youtube. Smart kitty!
TM, I used to live quite close to Stokes and would go broke almost every paycheck! You certainly have a full time job taking care of 3 greenhouses. How long have you been doing this? Do you keep a log?
I have to start gardening all over again since I moved here about 5 years ago. Had setbacks, but hey, that's what they're for...experience is the best teacher! Now I have an internet cheatsheet...called Dave's Garden!
Jenny, I might have to look into that "rash guard" clothings for Kel. He doesn't believe in sunscreen though his Dad paid the price for not doing so. Now TM, I'm glad you mentioned getting vitamin D from the sun. Kel's Mum's the opposite. Throughout her life, she always avoid the sun (fair Southern belle), now diagnosed with chronic vitamin D deficiency (lowest they'd ever seen at the office!)
So, everything in moderation.
G'day everyone! Oh well if you can call grey sky and rain a good day that is.About the vitamin D yes we are supposed to get at least15 mins of sunlight every day for our bones to be strong. No ignore that I must not ever complain about the rain ...sun or no sun everything is going crazy ...not really neat and pretty ...most jungle like in some parts ...look at these nanas
Chrissy, Daisy Mae is a character for a farm country girl. If you watch the Hillbillies, Jed Clampett's daughter, Daisy Lee or Dukes of Hazzard's Daisy Duke...their outfit of shorty shorts and low tops! This is one I found from a website similar to what most would refer to as Daisy Mae's threads!
Edited: Ooops..hope I won't get kicked off for posting that.

Well being a welder 10 hours a day,I thin k I get lots of the UV's every day, well my face is always red!!!!
I do a lot of tacking with out my helmet!!!
I worry about it a lot, since I was just a we one,I've always been outside, working the farms and orchards growing up,plus playing all the sports, then being a welder for over 40 years,I've been exposed to all the radiation and UV's everyday of my life.
My dad had skin cancer on the side of his face and ears, but he always thought he got exposed form the gas experiments,in the early 40's,while in the military,he said they would give them gas masks and put them in these railroad cars for hours exposed to all types of gases, that would make them very sick for a few days like the flu symptoms.
He always believed it was degrees of mustard gas!
Kind of got off the subject at hand, but I think people need sun not just for the bones but as well for peace of mind!!!!
Chrissy your pink kona hibiscus is beautiful,I need to get me another one!!!!
What is the white flower?
Is that a jasmine Chrissy? The white ones...
Youswer!!!LOL
With her hair done in Pig Tails!!!! LOL
Cover your eyes TM :-P
The white flower is the Philadelphus (I think that spelling is right) or we call it mock orange it smells like fresh oranges! mmmmm.
At 58 I am a bit long in the tooth for shorty shorts ...might frighten the horses ha ha ha .
Tm oooh that welding is fierce! I have had to take my hubby to the hospital on more than one occasion for Flash burns to the eyes (stubborn feela does not always put the goggles on if he is in a hurry ...He also comes home with soldering sunburn (thats what I call it anyway ...you take care of your skin now!
Are the red ones, red hummingbird vines? Waiting for mine to completely take over the chain link fence!
And those hanging?? Chrissy, you have just renewed my interest in mock orange. Seen them a lot as shrubs in Louisiana. Wonder if my zone can take it.
