Play hookey, and tropical gardening in the greenhouse!

Well that is all that looked presentable today most things bent over and washed out looking ...hopefully a glimpse of the sun tomorrow as the cannas are starting up and the lilly pilly is about to burst into a ball of fluff :) It is the 1st of Dec on Sat arvo at 4 daylight savings time and once again the sky has darkened up and I think another storm again tonight. I hope you are all enjoying whatever you are doing ...first day of Summer for us ...I am pretty certain the drought is over ...

Well did some googling around and found that Tecoma's synonymous to Campsis Radicans and Hummingbird vine is one!! Learn something new everyday here! Hummingbirds are supposedly drawn to the red trumpets of this vine.
Thanks for posting your beautiful pics Chrissy.
Been a long long cold day. Nite nite dear friend.

Good night h :) and 77 what time is it in Texas Darling?

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Hi Gal!
It's Saturday night and I ain't got nobody, got some money cause I just got paid!!!!!
Love that ole song!!!

Same months just it;s the 21st of the here months instead of the 1st of the month,Hmm I wonder why???
Well having to force my self to go to work, waiting on the newspaper lady so I can read the paper on my lunch break!
Later Gator!

Half a while crodile ...:)

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

At the moment it's 9:41 AM! I couldn't hold my eyes open so had to call it a night!
Slept really good ALL night! Beginning to feel a little better!

Glad you are all doing well! Sorry you have to work TM! Take care!

Ha ha ha look at how I spelt crocodile ...I think I was a bit tired too!
The worst spelling gaff I ever made was in a group email to family and friends, we were discussing organ donors ...My email went out
stating that I was an organ diner! ...everyone was shocked since I am a vegetarian ...
Hi 77 just going on 7am Sunday morning I hope you are rested and about to enjoy a great weekend! I think the sun is trying to come out ...must go have a look :)
see you all later
chrissy

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

I must have been tired, because I didn't even notice that it was mispelled! haha
I didn't realize that you were a vegetarian! No meat whatsoever???? Don't think I could handle that!!! My problem is I love everything!! Do need to cut back somewhere tho, and need to get more exercise!!! If it didn't do me in so bad! I try to walk around the yard as much as possible looking at my flowers!!!!! Speaking of which, I have either a datura or an angel trumpet about to bloom. It is so purple it is black. The inside is white. Will get a picture, but am having trouble uploading my camera to my computer. May have to use DS's computer.

Sun is out here....partly cloudy, so still on the cool side....very nice out!!!!

Youngest granddaughter and I just finished painting with acrylics. Will try to get some pictures of those as well!

How'd your day at work go TM? See y'all later!

77 would love to see pics of your paintings ...sounds like you were having fun ...no I eat fish and eggs ...and only very little meat (mostly if we are guests somewhere) ...I can't explain why really except that one day when I was very little my mother stopped to talk to a friend up the street as she chatted I stood staring into the back of the Butchers van as they unloaded the carcases of pigs (with their heads on) sides of beef etc ...I know it sounds silly but to me as a small child I thought some things were people and I started to cry ...mum got annoyed with me and asked why I was blubbering (interupting the conversation with her friend) ...when I told her that they had dead people on the hooks in the truck she scolded me and said "they are only cows ,pigs and sheep". I am not sure if that is why ... but I think it did something to my silly head
as most of the time I just choose something other than meat.
I have no problems with anyone eating whatever they like,
it's just my own quirk . Oh that flower sounds wonderful I hope it smells pretty for you :)

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh Chrissy, that does sound like a very traumatic event! Sorry to hear that you experienced that!!!! Children are so impressionable. That would be horrid to think that the things in the van might have been people!!!! (Even tho they weren't) I'm sure that was very frightening!!!!!!!

I took pictures, now to see if we can get them uploaded. My computer is not recognizing anything besides my motem that gets plugged into a USB port. I'll have to switch everything around and see if it will see my camera in that other plug.
I even bought a hub, and it didn't help! So it might be awhile.

The little purple flower doesn't have a fragrance. I am thrilled to have it, as it is from a cutting that a friend gave me last year. It was such a small plant that I didn't expect it to bloom until next year, so it was quite a surprise!!! Also, my peach double hibiscus has lots of buds forming on it, so if it stays warm for awhile maybe we will get some more hibiscus also!!!!! This weather is really crazy!!

Heavenscape, I can tell you that mock oranges grow here in zone 5. My grandma has had them for a long time in the front of her house.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Chrissy, you have a natural aversion towards meat, stemming from your childhood experience! Actually, you'd stay much healthier as a vegan. I tried that for a few months, but I am a carnivore! I love steaks, served medium rare please. I kill for a good piece of prime rib!! Back in Singapore, vegetables are your main dish, fish or meat your side dishes. Now, I paid the price of a Western diet!!
T77, I have to use my elliptical machine or walk for at least 30 minutes a day..doctor's orders! It's impossible, having weak willpower.
OK..back to the games. SEC football. My LSU tigers are playing against Tenn. Volunteers.
Chrissy, is it possible to send rhizomes there? I know it take at least 2 weeks if sent first class.

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Alright Pepper!!! I envision a row of it!! Now to look for them!
Thanks again Pepper!

TM..ooh..I am so jealous!!!! I have the pink and red cereus and none bloom this year! Kel killed my white ones! Love bird of paradise, looks like a toucan's bill!
You certainly prosper in your greenhouses! I could imagine you in them taking a "tropical" green holiday!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Thanks Heaven, when I walked out of the garden room, where my pc along with some palms and seedlings are, into the greenhouse,I could smell the cereus from 30ft away.
Your right,I never thought that before, but it does look like a tucans bill.
Next 37 days ,just me and my plants!
No work!
Just play!
Don

Is that Streltizia Mandela's Gold? very nice ...TM ...I bet you are looking forward to your holiday in the greenhouse ...what sort of temps would it be in there during Winter?
So much to smell in my air here that it is almost overwhelming ...please excuse the mess but hubby has my "secret garden" surounded by car wrecks look what is starting up and there are hundreds and hundreds of little buds ...I know you love this one too ...

Thumbnail by

I get up close due to the wrecks ...a favourite hiding place for red backs and red bellied blacks ...so from a little distance here are the first of the Summer gardenias ...they are peaking over the top of that 6 ft fence! there will be hundreds soon.Check out the buds!

Thumbnail by

We have some sunshine at the moment ...so I have to go do some stuff ...I hope you are all enjoying your day/arvo/evening /sleep ...ha ha ha or whatever
...back in a little while!

Chrissy, it's not your gardenias, though I love them too, that caught my attention. Are those gingko leaves in the background??

Yes my beautiful ginko!

I know gardenias are common but those are the huge ones called Professor Pucci (hard to find now) and they have flowers the size of tea cups!
My ginko was only 8 inches tall when I planted it! :)

TabacVille, NC(Zone 7a)

Applauding here! Should have pushed Kel to get that 8 foot gingko tree I saw in our local nursery. It would have beautiful golden leaves by now. But, when the pocket's far too small to feed our love of plants....
I tried rooting some cape gardenias...no success. Will look up for Pucci.
Sheesh....I HAVE to stay away from DG!!
Edited: Did google Pucci...only available in Australia :((

I think I finally killed my gardenia. I don't think I watered it enough. Now have to wait til spring and get me another one. :~(

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

If I pet my gardenias a whole lot I may or maynot get 4 - 5 bloom a season.
Just about the time I can't envy Chrissy anymore, she mentions the snakes and I'm gone--------

Aww Pepper, you and me both!
Christi, red backs and the other backs...they're snakes???? Lololol!!! I'm sooo ignorant!!! Thought they'd be like geckos of Geico!!!!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I think so. She mentions snakes often.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Chrissy, thanks dear for reminding me I have some snail vine to check on!!!
Yes that is the best smelling flower I can think of!
Heaven you can find Augusta or Miami Gardenia, that have huge flowers but not as big as the pucci!
I have a cutting of a gardenia, about a year old over a foot tall and wide but no flowers yet!
Temperature outside i s 32*,windchill about 25* and let me see each greenhouse has a different temperature depending on the plants that are in there,so one has a temp,of 78*
one 68* one 61* and last one has 55*,and they will stay at the temp, until the sun comes up tomorrow, then each one will climb 10 to 15 *.

G'day everyone! have a go at this ...been without power for hours!

Oh my, what a stormy sky!!!!! Hope you are OK!!!! Love those red babies, tho!

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Great color of the red against the sky.

Hi 77 It feels like monsoons might feel ...rain rain rain ...so strange, unreal after the years of drought!
h you can get cuttings of the Ginko from the hardwood ...I have struck a few that way, only trouble being that they are very slow growing you will save a few years if you buy one :)
Red backs are spiders (related to black widows) and the red bellies are black snakes with red bellies ...both of these you don't really want to run into :)
Gardenias need warmth ...to flower well, sorry and don't love them to death ...some potting mixes and soils are too alkaline for them .I always mix old cow manure into whatever I am planting them into.Come the Spring a heavy mulch of cow poo will see them leap away ...however our Spring is pretty warm.
TM look at this pic of the strelizia head ...see the large seeds?
Uh Oh gotta get off another warning of a storm cell with hail ...
Bye for now

Chrissy, be safe. Hope you had stocked up on batteries...or a generator..
Anyway, will have to get that gingko tree, no neighbours have any that I can make a cutting of! Yeah, I had rooted the gardenias in straight potting soil!
TM, Stokes has a special on shipping! Y'all know what that means!
Ooooh it's starting to rain here!!!!
