Scattelogical ramblings and desultory humor - User's Guide

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I remember that, Cat, I remembered everything except your REAL name, and now that I've got that straight, I should be fine - for a month or two. Actually, I had a hard time with how to pronounce Michaela - I never knew any Michaelas before, which apparently makes me weird in my family. Around September I learned it was supposed to be mick - AY - lah. I'd been imagining it as Michael-uh or Mick-eye-ay-lah or Mish-eye-ay-luh or some perhaps Israeli pronunciation, definitely more than three syllables - what a relief when DH and DD#2 set me straight on that one. So THAT place, I was mesmerized by Michaela's beautyname, having only recently learned how to pronounce it.. So, Cat, while I DO remember your voice and your face, tacking the name on was just too much for my feeble brain. I'm delighted to go on calling you Cat, if it's all the same to you. I knew somebody was named Emily - I can picture her, too. It's just stitching the handles to the names that gives me trouble. Dave, dave, Al, Victor, and I all used the simple way - and me the simplest of all. It's strange - on some threads people call me carrielamont, as if it were some trumped up fantasy name. It's just my name!

Look at what a lot of words I wasted on one small post! Dumb, dumb dumb dumb. Stategy, woman, strategy! We'll never win with that kind of thinking! xxx, C

LOVE the Christmas tree story. Oh my!

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

WC, you don't really want to be called WC, do you?

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

WC, Water, WaterCan, WaterCan2, WC2, on the 'net I don't use real names.

Thank you for asking though Zuzu, - reminds me of 'Zuzu petals' in "It's a wonderful life". - nice name ☺

Sonoma county... wine! ☺

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, the first time I saw Zuzu's screen name I thought of Zuzu's petals too. WC, was there a 'watercan' or 'watercan1' already taken??

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I didn't check VG, when I signed up I thought the handle 'watercan was so obvious to gardeners I quickly decided to add a 2 to it. I didn't want to get bumped back to the signup page telling me it was taken! LOL! The 'handle' doesn't matter to me, as long as there is an understanding of mutual respect. ☺

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Between you and the handle??

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

LOL! Yes that too! ☺

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Oddly, I aquired that nickname long before I ever started gardening. It came from the gingersnap cookie, and I recently read that the cookie was also the inspiration for the daughter's nickname in "It's a Wonderful Life."

Interesting, I should get some of those as an 'after dinner' treat!

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

They might be awfully stale. I'm not sure they still exist.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Probably renamed. Anyway, I can always make my own Gingerbread cookies, now is the perfect season for them.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very interesting, Zuzu! Didn't know that about the movie.

There was another great Billy Wilder movie with Ray Milland and Ginger Rogers - The Major and the Minor. Ginger's name was Su-Su.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

I remember that movie, Victor. It was cute.

And then there was Tu-Tu, Tuesday Weld. My son the filmmaker, who's long on talent and short on tact, used to say he'd hire her to play me if he made an autobiographical film, because "she used to be pretty too."

"Another" Billy Wilder movie? What was the first one? I must have missed the reference to it.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No I meant there were many great Wilder movies.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

Boy, you're not kidding, and he was pretty amazing himself. A very funny guy. I once read an interview that highlighted his sardonic sense of humor. The interviewer asked him how he felt knowing he had so many fans all over the world. Billy Wilder replied that he dreamed of taking them all to Guyana one day.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, he was very sharp - like Groucho or Steve Allen.

Not Zuzu!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Re-named ☺

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Cat, there is nothing wrong with you & Victor being bi-ambidextrous. It really increases the possibilities.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Actually, I believe it just about covers them all.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Is it officially winter yet?

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

YES! It is officially winter!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Thank you!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No, not yet. Dec 22 at 1:08 AM EST.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

no LoL!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

The first snow makes it "offically winter" in my book - so it is Winter!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I don't wear a real coat until it is my "official winter" which I hope doesn't start until mid Jan, even when I am in Vt. It mostly works as a psychological trick to shorten the time for me until spring. Plus I am a big believer in not over dressing as I think it is bad for my health, but don't have an ounce of evidence. Silly mind games! Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Then you should join the 'Polar Bear Club' and go for a brisk swim during winter!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

There are the "L Street Brownies" (I'm sure I got that wrong) - a men's club in South Boston that trrrrrrraditionally goes swimming off a beach in Boston on New Year's Day. Well, for a short dip. xx, Carrie

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I like cold water, but I am not crazy. They have a fund raiser here on Thanksgiving morning called the The Nantucket Turkey Plunge "Freezin' for a Reason" to raise money for the children's room at the library. I need to join the other 300 or so running into the harbor for brisk dip for this good cause. Maybe next year. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'd throw the turkey in.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I'd throw in the leftovers.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I'll keep the cranberry sauce, though.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I love cranberry sauce! Cranberry relish is wonderful, too. Leftovers are wonderful but maybe not after two weeks.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Isn't that a nice graphic that Dave put up for the page banner?

I am not kidding here. I just got a phone call. The Caller ID read. US GOVERMENT, IA. The lady said I am sorry, I have the wrong number. I swear to God it sounded like Hillery Clinton.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

i guess you get a lot of political calls in NH, yes?

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Quick! ...Get a new number!!
