Eleanor:
How eloquently put. "Think of the roses as just resting ..." I will try to curb my anticipation by using that line of thinking, too.
I like to think of all the bulbs as 'breathing in all the nutrients and gathering strength to break through the frozen ground".
It's Harper's B-day #2
But I have roses that are still trying to bloom - now what do I do?
Let them bloom and enjoy them. Mid December is fine for taking off the "lollipop" tops so they don't get whipped with the storms of winter or heavy (wet) snowfall. I have many in bloom right now and wouldn't dare cut them off.
Put your rose pics on your desktop and use them in a screen saver slide show so you can see them all winter long!!
What a great idea, Eleanor. I'm going to make a slide-show screensaver of the "roses of summer" (not to mention the dahlias, the lilies, the tomatoes. . . you get the idea!) It will be like summer-on-a-screen. Thanks for the suggestion.
--Emily (who just figured out how to make quote boxes. Amazing what you can learn from reading those FAQs. Finally)
Michaela - Don't forget to take pics of those roses. WOW roses in November or even December - can't even imagine it in this area. Glad you liked the suggestion Emily and Candyce I loved your idea of the bulbs!! Eleanor
Thanks, Eleanor.
oh well, I have started going to Traders Joe... I love their minis so I got some... I will plant them out next year... and I can keep them in the sun room and they will sleep eventually..
I use the winter to plan my garden for what I'll do next. Usually there are still warm days I can get out there and putz around. I also take care of my houseplants that get ignored all summer. Oh, that and occasionally I paint a room!
We do the exact same things. Jack generally spends most of January with Park's Seed catalog and painting is generally February's job. This time I'll be doing two walls in the kitchen.
I've been working on just the dahlias for next year for the last month: decisions, decisions!
I got the rest of the houseplants in yesterday: I was too afraid of a frost. Haven't had one yet. The porch is overflowing with plants. I keep getting rid of them in the spring but, somehow, they multiply over the summer. I could have brought in more annuals but I need to be able to get in there and walk around to water plants.
Arlene - what color are you painting the kitchen walls?
I want to do that rag look with very very light beige over the white that's there now. I don't want it too raggy! That would match the background of the sage trellis with clematis border.
Maybe I should practice in the mud room?
Or with Calamine lotion on Jack?!
Oh, just go for it!! That sounds like a fun project! Be sure to post pics of the before and after for us! What better way to spend a fall or winter day??
Too cold for that. He'd get goose bumps.
Day? You expect me to be done in one day? The pressure is on. I'll start it in January.
You're going to have to document the process!
Well.....many days.....or weeks! You do have to take your time! I lost my head! Sorry!
Thanks for the reprieve!
I'll take photos, Victor.
Pirl - if you're afraid that it might look too raggy, try sponging. That's another method that is fun to do. You've probably already picked out colors, but Home Depot has a faux painting phamplet for Behr paints - shows different methods, colors needed, and the resulting finish. They might even have it on-line but I'm not sure. Keep us posted. Eleanor
Maybe Raggedy Ann and Sponge Bob could help?
I'm a faux painter.
Good one Victor - now I know who to hire for my next painting job!! Dave - you are a man of many talents!! Eleanor
Thanks for all the help and humor. I'll take pictures so you can see what I'm trying to do.
New name for Dave - Mo Faux.
We'll have to start a new thread for all of our home improvement projects that get done in the wintertime.
Victor!!!!!
Good grief! Now we have to double team Victor!
i think he'd probably enjoy that
You're right!
I was just looking over the Behr faux painting brochure last weekend! I love the denium and linen textures - but they look really hard to do. I did a kind of marble look in my bathroom with a sponge printing roller that had a design on it. That was fun and turned out reasonably well. Although my bathroom is about 5' x 8' and is tiled half way up the wall - so there wasn't much actual painting required. lol
The more the merrier!
Ugh, Friday's over already and I didn't get anything done yet... When will I get to the point in life where I can have weekends that are chore free?
Harper:
I thought the weekends were made for catching up on the chores that didn't get done. *smile*
That's what we're waiting for, too, Harper!
Uhm..I meant I was a fake as a painter (faux painter). So now I'm more fake (Mo Faux)?
Eleanor, sorry to say,I'm a man of few talents, none of which require fine motor skills! But I am good at the few I have.
Dave - I'm so disappointed!! Now I'll have to hire Raggedy Ann and Sponge Bob to do painting jobs. LOL I actually do my own painting but it takes me a long time to get started. I keep procrastinating cause it's such a big messy job and I hate cleaning out brushes. Eleanor
I hate every single part of painting, except picking the colors.
funny - because on all the ads they make that part look so hard.
I like picking the colors too.....Last winter when "we" (the Royal We) painted our kitchen cabinets here, my DH did the painting and I did the color picking. BUT, after he would paint a cabinet door with MY choice of color, I'd change my mind and have him try another color. After the third time, I painted it myself while he was napping so I wouldn't risk decapitation! LOL That color did the trick! Now they're all that color. He is a patient saint!! LOL
But not a painting saint? Is there a Patron Painting Saint??
