Are ya'll ready for S-N-O-W?

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

We had a lot of fog this morning. The air is very wet.
I do not care for the hot weather. I do not handle the heat + humidity well. The heat just drains all my energy.
In the cold, you can just put on a extra layer. I would do fine in Alaska, if they had sunshine in the winter.

Hastings, MI(Zone 5b)

roflmao i misread sarv48 comment about "sitting on a heating pad"
i read it as "sitting on a heating vent"

omg what an image
sheri

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

my boys sat on the heat vents all the time lol
Gloria

Williamsburg, MI(Zone 4b)

If your flanel nightie is long enough, you don't have to SIT on the heating vents, It just sort of inflates with warm air like a tropical cocoon.

Wow, you know you live in Michigan when....

I love this weather right now. I'm so frustrated that I can't get out and put up Christmas lights while there is no snow, but I still have a few Santas to finish for the Christmas shows. Now I have to worry about being suddenly confronted with a pile of deer meat to process at any moment. (Well considdering his hunting record, that possibility is slim)

Ludington, MI

OMG! Thanks for that remimder that tomorrow is November 15th! There's a nitwit that hunts in the woods behind our house. I make sure to stay out of the back yard until the season is over. Still need to get out and cut back the roses. What a shame. They still have buds but sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do. Venison Chops dredged in flour and fried in butter. Ummmm!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

out to plant 250 more bulbs I got from touch of nature!!!
what a sale!!!!!!!!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Nov the 15th is a holiday here, no school, town is a desert.
Been out in the woods for 45 days, seen over a hundred deer, and have one in the freezer so far. Don't see as many deer after tomarrow, when the yahoos get in the woods around us. Not as hard to hunt with a gun, but you sure don't see the deer. They all go into hiding. Can you blame them?

Hastings, MI(Zone 5b)

i think the dnr quota this year is 450,000 is that per person? and thats just for michigan.
maybe i should be farming these critters!
sher

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I keep a journal of hours spent, weather, and deer I see. I have seen many more deer this year than the last 2 when I started the journal.
Lots of fawns this year.

Williamsburg, MI(Zone 4b)

I had a friend that lived in Maine. SHe used to send me silly aticales from the paper. One year there was a woman who was shot in the butt while hanging clothes up on the line by a deer hunter. The hunter was found liable as she was wearing an orange sweatshirt. The next year a woman was struck by an errant bullet while taking a cake out of her oven. The hunter was not charged. (she must not have had her orange oven mitts) Once I was visiting her and went out for a jog along the highway. The police picked me up and took me back to her house. Why? I wasn't wearing any orange. They take their hunting waaaay to serious is Maine.

I have friends who live out west, they think it is histerical that the schools are closed for the first day of deer season here. He-Who-Must-Eat-Meat just spent 85 bucks at the grocery store for deer hunting food. The only healthy thing in it was a bag of dried peas. The girl at the check out who knows me and how I shop, said "Does your wife know you are buying all this stuff?" He bought Spam. I am going to sleep in the bedroom with the door closed and a towel jamed under the door so I don't wake up at 5:30 to the smell of fried Spam. Gag.

Thank God there are women in the world. Somebody has to survive all the colesterol poisoning.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

I know what you mean all day to day I had men in the store getting there last minet stuff BEER meat sticks Jerky pickeld bologna cheese BEER you know all the importent stuff oh and the I need a pound of burger what are they going to do with a pound of burger for a whole week!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
Gloria

Ludington, MI

Gloria: I think that's why they call it BEER CAMP. My hubby doesn't go anymore but when he did, he didn't even try to pretend. Bunch of guys in a cabin, cooking turkey, drinking beer, and not a gun among them. Probably good, considering all the beer! Ah, those were the days. I looked forward to reading good books, watching "chick flicks", eating bon bons, and not shaving my legs. I need to get him back into hunting!

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Its a guy thang...more power to them.
We women try to make them too girly all year long so let them have their 2 weeks of beer and meat sticks.
Never-the-less I must admit I'm happy my DH just hunts some farmland down the road a few miles and comes home every night.
One fella in their hunting party bagged a nice 8 point this morning....yeah!
Lee got this big buck a few years ago and received a Michigan Commemorative Buck award for it.

Very nice deer Cottage-Rose!!!!!! It was a hard day today I hate being treated like I'm stupid especialy by men dressed in silly orange clothes LOL

I love deer hunting season!
Its a Michigan tradition and I come from many generations of men who deer hunt. I love seeing all that orange. I remember when it use to be red plaid. I love the cloudy days, the stark landscape, dried corn stalks in the fields and swift running deer.
And the men all have genuine smiles on their faces, under those shaggy "deer beards".
They belong in the woods.
Its the way it should be. :)

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

most of the people I deal with truly are very nice and I loved going to deer camp and being in the woods this time of year its been a long time ago that i got to do that Its just the few that i deal with every year that realy get me going its exciting to help some one when they get that very first deer
Gloria

AuGres, MI(Zone 5b)

When we first moved up here everyone was talking about "deer camp". They would say their husbands were at deer came. I finally asked where this camp was. I thought there was one big camp somewhere everyone went to for hunting. :)

We have 28 acres and twenty are in woods and we have a lot of deer. My son is the only one who hunts it though. He was out there before sunup this morning. He saw lots of deer but he's picky. He wants one with big horns. ha ha ha I asked him later today what he was doing to those deer because as I sat at the table and looked out the doorwall I counted about 14 of them just a gettin it running out of our woods down by the pond and then across the road into those woods.

I remember that story about the woman getting shot in her yard. I'm staying inside and watching the furkids when I let them out for potty breaks.

With gasoline being so high I wonder if fewer men will drive up here for hunting this year. I know the local businesses are hopeing for a good season.

Trust me THERE HERE and more are comeing This weekend!!!!! LOL

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

Loved the deer hunting stories. Too funny!
I am sorry, but you should not have to wear orange in the backyard hanging clothes. That is terrible!
Our future SIL came up to hunt again this year. He is not the type and surprized us by wanting to hunt. Last year when he came up, the DD came to. She came down to the basement (our deer camp) and was wearing a white fur hat, white gloves and a black leather jacket. I almost busted a gut laughing.
I redressed her in camo and orange, and nice warm clothes.
He didn't see a deer.
But this year (yesterday) he got a spike and is very proud. He was wearing DH's fathers old red plaid coat and looked quite dapper. I made him an orange knitted cap that read "the buck stops here"
DD didn't see anything. But I filled both my doe tags and passed on the spike, that went right to the SIL. I was glad.
Sooooo, we have meat for the freezer!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

I dont deer hunt and my family never did! I cant stand the smell of deer meat cooking! gag
So the only good thing i see about it is, all the men are out of the house!!!
I did get to meet the chip n dale dancers one hunting season=now that was some great dear meat!! LOL

Cold n gloomy here but NO snow! Saw 2 bug deer running in front of the woods the other day-the farmer was plowing down the corn!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I wouldn't like venison if it smelled when cooking either. I had some moose meat like that. I am not sure what was wrong with it, but if it smells gamey, I throw it away.
We process our own. No tallow, no bone (gives real bad flavor) etc. If it is processed right, it should smell and taste like good lean tender beef.
Lol about the dancers. I have never been to one of those, but it looks like a lot of fun and laughs.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

The only time i ever smelled it cooking was when i was pregnant for my oldest and had morning sickness and ever since then GAG!
It was freshly ""shined"" killed and gutted-then they tossed it in the fryin pan GAG
needless to say they also shot my car that night! killed the tranny!!(it smelled better than the deer)

The chip dancers were about 20yrs ago! it was FUN to say the least!

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

I think it probably was better 20 years ago. I think the shows (I don't know, just imagine) are over the top now, you know, like tv and that.
Sign of getting old I guess.

Plainwell, MI(Zone 5b)

Well I do not hunt either, my dad does. He bought a really old camper to put out in the woods (paid 20. for it) So you know what shape it is in huh? But the did all kinds of "upgrades" and they call it the Tajamahal (sp). But boy do they ever have fun out there. Ususally him my cousin and brother go. They make coffee and laugh a whole lot. Pretty funny ususally some one bags a deer though. My nephew got one his very first year hunting... He was pretty excited. Im sure he was out there yesterday. National holiday don't you know? Good luck to them Im glad its not me. Ronna

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

BIL has an old trailer on his hunting property, decor of avacado and burnt orange, with shag carpet. They call it the Red/Green trailer. LOL

I never thought I could shoot a deer. I am a person who puts bugs back outside instead of squashing them. The deer are so pretty. But I like to be outdoors and when I married DH, he got me a gun and we went together. I kind of went for him, now, I enjoy it so much that I bow hunt by myself. I spent 2-3 HUNDRED hours in the woods each fall in a blind. Sometimes it is frustrating, sometimes it is great just watching the deer, and sometimes I bring home the venison.

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

I love venison, but DH isn't a hunter, so we don't get much (other than the ones we hit with the car...don't eat them either) But DS is a hunter and sometimes he will give us a pkg or two. He likes to make jerky out of his deer.

Cloudy and dreary here too...looks like snow clouds. I've been inside cleaning (you'd think I was preggo with all the cleaning I've done!) Wood is split and brought up to the house and DH and I were talking about getting a corn burner...this cutting wood is for the birds. We'll see.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

Dori if you saw some of the deer that people bring in for us to do up for them I know you'd gag I do I wont except any thing I can smell or is green or aged as they call it and the hair its awfull dont get me going!LOL
Gloria

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

sarv we looked into corn burners and they're not nearly as economical as wood, plus you can't use the ordinary shell corn you get at feed mills.
It has to be alot drier.
I think those corn burners use a 50# bag per 24 hours.
What I'd really like are those outside boilers but they cost $$$$$$$.
Costs us $400. for our winters supply of wood and $150. to rent a log splitter for the weekend. As long as DH can still do it we will keep using the wood stove. LOTS cheaper that LP Gas or electric.

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

P.S.
Farmland deer taste very similar to beef if you cook it right.
Wild game is very lean and very good for you.
I'm not real big on venison (hubby LOVES it) but never noticed that it smells bad when you cook it.
Its all a matter of what you are use to.
I think pork smells like pig manure when you cook it

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

I think pork smells like that when you are cutting it I'm getting to the point where I think I could not ever eat meat!!!!!!!!!LOL
Gloria

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

I know...kinda gross huh?
About the only cut of pork I prepare now is pork loin.
I think pork steak smells really gross when you fry it.
Pork roast is too fatty for me to eat. bluck!

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Oh hubby got a buck today!

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

GOOD FOR HIM !!!!!!!!!!! I do mean that I know its so exciting for them
Gloria

Cottage Rose...since you live close by me...where do you get your wood? How much do you burn in a winter? congrads on DH getting a deer!!

We used to cut all our own wood out of woodlots behind our house, but the wood has all been taken down (land sold etc) and big developments put in. We have two big piles for this winter, but will need to buy more to make it through the cold months. We have a woodstove in our family room that heats most of the house...I am just sick of the mess of it all. But when the high heat bills come...I'll probably be changing my mind!!

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

I will send you a PM

Hastings, MI(Zone 5b)

we also heat exclusively with our wood stove. we cut dead trees from our stream side
woods, age new ones and drag home last years cuts. we also replant for cutting in
5 years the poplars, let the old oaks grow big and tall now and the maples too. we have
removed sadly the elms, due to borers. i am trying some new varieties of elms to see
how fast they can grow in the bottom land there for reforestation. some actually, grow
too fast !

dh thinks we go through about 2 - 3 cords for the winter. if that much. face cord is about
$35, so 3=1 full cord, so about $110 for a full cord (split and delivered all hardwood)
so thats about $350 total if we had to buy wood to heat with for the wood stove.

I also cook on the wood stove btw.
the dogs don't move from it nor does the tortoise.

I can do bread raising and baking on it also. we put steaks in to burn too, makes
dh feel manly. : )

i like hotdogs personally in the fire, and marshmallows. bubbling soups is a good thing.

in this day and age of michigan losing so many jobs, many of our summer workers are
cutting and delivering wood doing driveways stuff like that. we try to support all we can.
every little $1.00 helps them.

regards to all
sheri

Hastings, MI(Zone 5b)

yesterday our neighbor who bought the 22 acre woods next to us as his personal exclusive
hunting territory, well, his buddy knocks on our door and asks if he can set up his blind
in the back of our hay field as the deer run across our 20 acre field and back across our
hay field and then in back of the horse pastures, into their "hunting preservation". I laughed
at him, told him sure! Just to make sure he gets us a few steaks.

Later on in the afternoon, after watching perhaps 50 deers go scampering by him, in front of
him, behind him, on top of him, and no shooting, I figure, well, better fire up the lawn tractor
with the cluncking red trailer behind it, get the dogs out and we all go banging and roaring up
the hay field about a 1/4 mile and stop in front of his super dooper pop up blind with flip up
window and rain shield. His head pops out, he is covered head to foot with camo and ghillie
like suit fluffings .... I yell out to him " HELLOOOOOOO"....... and then I try to talk over my
roaring mower motor, but then finally turn it off. The gist of the conversation is, he is waiting
for the "big buck". I didn't want to tell him that the big buck never comes here, he is over on
Sisson Road where they have many cows and it smells so "purty and girlie" over there. the
bucks, steers, bulls etc all hang there. LOLOL
So, after that productive conversation, I turn the mower back on, and turn around with all
5 dogs trotting after me and the little red trailer bouncing and banging and rattleing all the
way back to the house. I did stop enroute to visit with my two Percheron loves, Joy couldn't
give a care she just wanted to know if I had dinner, and Ollie, who is much younger pretended
that i was a dangerous threatening roaring bad mower and ran and bucked and ran some
more, and then gave it up to come over to me for love anyhow. he is young and my sweet heart.

I got back to the house and chuckled about it all, how much money he was spending on his
gear and such and all those deer dancing around him. you could have tripped them they
were so close. wham!
sheri
PS this is the same hunter last year who came up to my house to ask me if it was legal to
shoot a bobcat, because I was still a deputy at that time and would know about those
sorts of things. It was a strange question, but I listened, and then he pointed out that we
had a bobcat in the south pasture, I looked, sure enough, we had a bobcat there. it was
my kitty, who has a cut off tail, and his name for sure was "bob the cat". and this schmo
wanted to shoot it. He got all frantic as the bobcat made its way through the tall grass
and he got really excited when he realized that it was really "coming toward us!!!!!!!",
I knew Bob would pop out of the grass looking for love and some goodies and maybe
a female cat, but I wasn't going to say anything to him. I just let him see for himself and
agreed and finally told him who that bobcat was. Boy that was a keeper story!

Cedar Springs, MI(Zone 5b)

Hey Sheri...how is your surgery recovery coming along?

I can cook on my wood stove if need be but its not a cook stove.
When the power use to go out before we had a generator I would cook on the wood stove and heat water on it.

I sure do love wood heat. So nice n' warm n' cozy. Our wood burner sits in the basement directly under an open register in the livingroom floor. It doesn't go through our duct work...just drifts up through the register and up the back steps from the basement. Our bedrooms are a bit cool when its really cold but we like to sleep in a cool room anyway.

Theres been kind of a renaissance with wood burning with the high cost of fuel these days. We've been burning wood for 30 years. Kinda wondering what we will do when we go to Mexico this winter for a week in January since our gas furnuce is no longer hooked up to the chimney and too old and dust filled I suppose to run anyway. Plus all we have is a little 120 gal. LP tank.

Heres DH cutting wood....

We would see the most deer when we use to go horseback riding.
When the kids were still home we use to ride almost every night after supper on the 200 acres next door (now a golf course/ugh).
I guess they deer weren't afraid of the horses even though they had loud, laughing humans on their backs.

sorry made mistake on names meant vicky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got my sling off today! Hooray and I can type and write but keep my elbow in by my side.
I feel like a million bucks. the doctor this afternoon said everything is coming along, and
when i go back in 6 weeks, he expects to see a much better range of motion....like being
able to lift my arm more than 5" away from my side! LOLOL.....my mind says arm, raise,
wave, fluff hair, scratch ear.....and nothing happens. LOL!!! but the physical therapy is
really going to help. I am entitled to 75 visits, and pay $15 per visit. I don't want to use them
all up so quickly though. I can do a lot of active exercises here...(clean chickens...pull weeds)
no I am not allowed to do anything like that at all yet. maybe he said about 5 lbs to lift...I will see
if I can even lift that much.

I dont have a good idea for your vacation time for the stove. you don't want frozen pipes.
do you have someone to come to house to take care of it? animals and plants and stuff?

your dh looks so cute! he looks like my dh lou, but twice as big. lou is about 5' tall now, he
lost 4" from discs collapsing in his back. oy! lou also got a brand new husq chain saw tthe
350 last year, and 2nd time out cracked the casing on the bottom that whic holds the whole
darn thing together. husq wouldn't honor the guarantee, they said it was lowes fault and lowes
said it was husq responsibility, so for $175 we could get it fixed, and lou just drilled in a
flat piece of metal to bridge the broken part, and we are still using it. not as good anymore,
but we can't afford to replace the stupid thing. how often does your dh have to sharpen the
chain? we sharpen after every few cuts it seems.

thank you sooo much for asking after my stupid arm and surgery. its been a long haul.
and it will be about a year till i can hopefully function again. still sleeping in the chair. : (
I longingly look at my cool thermapedic bed with my open window right above my head....
in time.....

Let me know if you come up with any brain storms about heating the house in absence
we can brainstorm, i will ask lou dh too.
regards
sheri
