Time for a pup-date

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, rcn, sally and hart!

Rcn, if it makes you feel any better, my pup will likely top out at a slim 150 lbs or more. :)

Well, I do believe that it's official now ... we just received our very first "Puppy Shower Gift" in the mail today. LOL Too funny - my friend sent me a box that has organic dog biscuits, a kong toy shaped like a teething ring, a stuffed hedgehog, dog biscuit cookbook w/ 3 sizes of bone cookie cutters, a bag of clickers, and some freeze dried lamb steak!!! I love it!!!

I've been a reading and dvd watching machine, trying to absorb as much dog training information as I can soak up. I'm trying to do things a bit differently this time around, so am attempting to get educated. I'M SO EXCITED FOR A PUPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Two more months to go...

OMG - can't wait to see photos!!! Tell the breeder some of us need at least that much of a puppy fix!!!

Will any of you all be at the show in April in Timonium? My Neapolitan Club will be having its Nationals there. :) My little boy, who I co-own with my best friend will be showing. He is a Neapolitan Mastiff.. He does not live with me but with my best friend, but he is still my boy...

What a pumpkin! Is he considered a blue?

I'll be working the Great Dane Rescue booth in Timonium next Friday, but I don't know anything about a show in April. Could be a great opportunity to get my puppy exposed to crowds, so please post show details here, if you don't mind.

:)

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

The show is the weekend of April 19th. It is the Cherry Blossom Cluster. It is a HUGE dog show. 3000+ entries. The Neapolitan's National so there should be 50+ entries I hope. I will be running around like a chicken with my head cut off that day. We have an Italian Judge, many people who are not used to showing, and trophies to deal with. :)

The puppy is a blue. He is about 5 months and weights maybe 60lbs. He walks like a cat, which is cool.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi ya Jen!!! Love your guy - he's a cutie....I've always had a soft spot for the Mastiffs...awesome dogs...all of them. Almost looks like a touch of Blue fawn to him - is that color behind him or not a color for the Neo's

Glen Burnie, MD(Zone 7a)

Blue, Black, Tawny, and Mahogany are the colors that they come in. They can have white on the toes and chest and some brindling..

They are fun, but hard dogs..

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I hear ya...let's see I've had: Pitbulls, Bullmastiffs, Akitas, & Rotties...so when I say I relate...I'm being honest.

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Hey, Chantell, that's quite a selection of breeds! Of them, I've only had a Rottweiler myself, but I did have a Pitbull for a roommate once - I miss them both!

Okay, so I'm pretty sure that I'm going to throw a Meet the Puppy open house in late March or April ... That way I can kill a couple birds at once - enjoy cocktails and hors' ovaries [G] with friends whilst socializing the puppy to Big Scary People (especially children & men!). With any luck, a few local DGers might even drop by? I'm a 10 min. walk from metro ... :)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ohhh now THAT sounds like fun!!! I don't have a man but there's always Chloe LOL

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

nice idea!
our breeder was so happy that we took the kids down a few times, for the puppies and also for a year old male that didn't have kids around the house.
there's a College Park Metro stop?

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

There sure is! It's the next-to-last stop on the Green Line.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Do you think they'll let ALL of us on?
....ahhh just teasin' with you!!

OMG, I love it!

Lemme guess: male on left, Akita in center, female on right? Or did I get it all wrong? If I'm correct about Akita, please tell me what that coloring is considered!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

can't imagine anybody would try to stop them !!!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

sally - LOL...your's would match the group perfectly!!!
Wrightie - Amber, my bestest girl - 8 years young is on the left...Wolfie, the only "man" although the girls showed him how to pee-pee with his leg up...LOL We adopted him as an Akita mix but he's fairly slight of frame - leaning more toward a Dutch Shepard - he's 6...then there's Baby to the right...the perpetial baby...she most certainly has the rottie temperment - has been my challenge - but "we" have an understanding now..LOL. She's going to be 4 - would never know it though. If ever there's a mini-Rott...she'd be the mold...but so makes up for it in spirit (sounds better then saying willfulness...LOL)

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, tell Amber that I'm sorry for thinking that she was a boy!!!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

SSsshhhh....she thinks she is...LOL Definitely the "alpha" personality - but I'M THE Alpha...well you know what

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

you n me both, sistah

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Alphas Unite!!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, I am so not going near that one...

Gorgeous pups!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ah come on Jill...take the bite!!! Thank you.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Gorgeous doggies everyone!

Ginger (4yr old Boxer) could tell you a thing or two about being an "alpha dog". She wants to be alpha, but bigger dogs won't let her. She becomes a wooz. Socialization is so important for dogs and Ginger enjoys playing with others, once she gets past her alpha dominance. Maybe it's a female thing or is it more specific to certain breeds? Oops, sorry to get off topic.....

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

LOL Shirley, I think dogs are the topic...
hmm, alpha dogs. My sweet little Addy was getting the dominance treatment from a boxer female, same age as her but not yet neutered.
Then the next day we again went to dog park, there was a group of four boys who play together daily and she got 'dominated' before we even got thru second gate. Had her a bit spooked.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Here's my sweet baby.

He's a miniture phantom poodle by the name a Merlin.

We got him three months ago as a as a rescue at eight months. He would not get in a car. He would not go into the family room downstairs. He does not bark, no, not at all.

We can almost get him in the car, but if he sees keys, he panics and runs for his crate. Bummers. We travel a lot, and we would like to take him along. Grrrr.... It will take him time, but I'm sure he'll deside that we're okay.

Blessings on your garden and your four legged loves,
Elf

Isn't he sweet-- Now who could do something to him, so cute, to make him so scared of cars? A shame.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Elf - what a cutie!!! I have "special" ideas for folks found out to be mistreating animals, children or the elderly...and it ain't pretty.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Merlin is a wonderful name for him! I love his eyebrows and "mustache!"

You might be able to get some advice over in the pet forum about helping him get past his car phobia. Perhaps you could take it in stages. Park the car outside... when you're out playing with him, give him a treat just to come to you when you're standing near it. Then, maybe carry him in your arms and sit in the back seat of it, parked, for a moment. Again a treat for being brave. Etc. It may not even be the car ride that's so scary but something about the whole routine of however he was previously put into the car... maybe it's just the keys that spook him.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Yepper - Jill hit it right on...just a matter of reconditioning him...so he knows it's safe. Little steps...like opening the door and you just sitting there - petting him...talking to him in a soothing tone and treats - without initially actually needing to take him anywhere...

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

In fact, wait until he thinks of the car as a safe, maybe even a fun place before you even turn on the motor. It's like the gradual conditioning that can be done to help humans deal with phobias.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

(You know we are especially keen on giving all these suggestions because we want to meet Merlin... :-)

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally: Good to hear that Ginger isn't the only dominant female Boxer! She's now "fixed", but I think she needs much more socialization. I need to have her in more "play groups" with dogs her own size. There's a Boxer play group that I found in northern VA, but I'm hoping I can find another play group for her that's a lot closer.

Merlin is so sweet looking! Getting him to ride in the car will eventually be a treat that he'll look forward to. The motion of the car is very soothing (for dogs and babies). It helps lull them to sleep. Plus, looking out the window is very exciting too! So much to see!!

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Elf, Merlin is quite a cutie. I'd never heard of "phantom Poodle" before. Can I assume that that is strictly a term for his coloring?

For some great leads on dog training resources, please see my "Positive Reinforcement..." thread on the Pets forum. I have been researching my rear end off for modern training methodologies as I prepare to bring home my next (conformation and performance show?) dog.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Shirley, I'm glad you didn't take offense to my mentioning the boxer that Addy played with being dominant. Other than that, she was a fun good dog, and boy could she run!!!

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Sally: No offense taken. I know that Boxers are head-strong, since they were bred as guard dogs, I guess it's part of their genetics. Boxers are fun loving, affectionate, highly intelligent, very trainable and yes, they run like the wind!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Had to look for it Wrightie (didn't know you were "there")...here's the link hope that's ok: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/770327/

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Oh, thanks, Chantell -- I meant to add the link but got side-tracked! Anyone going up to the Pet Expo in Timonium this weekend? If you go today, please stop by the Great Dane Rescue (MAGDRL) booth and say hi!

See ya

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Where was that post/thread about favorite dog toys? Sally, did you start a thread on dog toys in the Pets Forum or has my brain gone to mush?

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Hmmm ... sally had the Jolly Ball thread, so maybe it was Hart that had the toy thread??? Was it here or in Pets Forum? Anyone? Anyone? Noonan?

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Wrightie, it was here but I don't remember what thread. One of the dog ones. I remember I wrote about my dogs' favorite toy, the Hide-a-Squirrel, Hide-a-Bee, etc. and that Upco has them for about half the price of anyone else. They have a lot of other toys and pet supplies at great prices too.
