Today's Weather in Your Garden 5

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

It's 46 here this morning....only a 20 degree difference from yesterday morning! Here's what is predicted for today.
Rain and wind. Some sleet may mix in early. High 48F. Winds SE at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of rain 80%. Rainfall may reach one inch.
Could do without those winds again!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

57 and raining hard right now with more rain due for tomorrow. Time to start deleting cookbooks.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

don't you people ever go to bed?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Raining and 48 here. Will be chilly the next few days.

Anyone have good advice on budget driveway shoveling for a DH with a broken back? We used to have a shovel that was really nice to use - I think it broke. A year or two ago we bought a used snow-blower from craigslist - started once, but then it didn't snow that year and DH forgot all about it. We're too cheap to hire someone but DH literally has a broken back -- he broke two vertebrae in 2005 and it's been more and more chronically painful.

Sorry to hear of your DH's back trouble C, hope he recovers soon. We have a 500 ft drive so hire a guy with truck and plow. I shovel in front of garage about 20 ft to avoid the mound left after the swing of the plow. Up there in Milton a snow blower might be worth the investment, maybe trade in the old one. Hard to find kids willing to hire out for shoveling these days. If you go the shovel route, I would get one of those ergonomically designed light weight ones, you know the crocked handle ones, that's what I use.

Its raining hard here, windy and 45. Got the fire going to take out the cold dampness. :)

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

No, he won't be recovering; sadly, all the doctors shake their heads and say " we told you that you might have chronic back pain! -- they didn't mention it would continue to deteriorate, though, which it has. :>(

Raining hard here too.

My DH will park a car as close as possible next to the garage or where he don't want to shovel or snowblow. He will even park 2 cars close together. When the snow is done he will pull the vehicles out where it will be plowed and broom them off.

If I had to go out and snowblow I would never get the thing started. I have never been able to start anything with a pull cord. I have a little culivator 14" . I can't even start that. If you got a snowblower maybe a neighbor could help you start it, if you can't.

Raining. The weather said maybe some white stuff in the mountains tomorrow.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Hah! Our neighbors hire companies with HUGE lawnmowers like a golf course or a ball field has - they mow a lawn in about 5 minutes, while the other guy edges around the trees. They probably shovel or plow in the winter but our budget is too tiny. I just remembered someone i know whose father has a plow - maybe they can help.

Plus, this machine started once, several years ago, and has been sitting in the rain ever since. My DH is not big on maintenance!

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Still raining! Grass is still green-everyone done mowing for the year? I've been laid up for abit so my grass is a tad longer than I want it for the winter. No, no-one else knows how to start a mower around here! lol when the teenagers ask for the keys I know it's not for the rider! Maybe I can start an exchange program....after driving the mower you can drive the car!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

The last mowing here is generally the second week in December.

We have to rake and mow one more time.
The Sun Is Peeking Out

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

The sun is out here, too.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Hi all. At the moment, it's 80 degrees but the humidity is low. I planted a bunch of impatiens this morning, and have almost finished my patio garden plantings....at least as to the perennials.

This morning on our walk we watched a school of dolphins in a feeding frenzy. Cool.

Stay warm and dry!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

We have had wet SNOW off and on today, just a bit here and there - cold and damp....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

80's and snow in back to back postings! Something's wrong with that picture.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Skies clearing here too, just in time for sunset, too early now. I hate the short days, worst thing about winter I think. Did some one say the "S" word? Yuck. Still in the lower 40s but starting to drop. Wind has calmed.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Yeah, Victor, I think I'm confusing everyone by posting from Fla. while keeping my NH stats on the post. I just can't bear to give up my emotional home and it doesn't allow you to give a temporary home as well. Maybe I should change the info?? What do you guys think? Seasonal change?? So confused.......LOL

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

DB no problem here. Just planting out annuals, sounds wonderful, I must admit though I do enjoy a short rest and planning time in winter and my back certainly appreciates the break. I hope the weather is a little more normal this year. Warm garden envy here. :) You can keep us gardening from afar. :)

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

We need a poll for Louise's new address. I'm going with 'Parts Unknown' or 'Disputed Zone'

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I like 'Disputed Parts' myself. Ngam, I appreciate the few down months too. Gives me a rest and a chance to take a fresh look at the garden and plan what I want to do for the next year. Now that my areas are filling in, it'll be more tweaking than major planning.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Hmm disputed parts --- I like that. Bet you won't get away with it, but I do like it.

I recieved this forward from my SIL and I thought if it is true (and it sounds like it could be) it's worth passing on. Maybe some of you know whether it's true or not?? Eleanor

Subject: NEVER KNEW THIS BEFORE...

NEVER KNEW THIS BEFORE...
I wonder how many people know about this? A 36 year
old female had an accident several weeks ago and
Totaled her car. It was raining, though not
excessively, when her car suddenly began to
hydro-plane and literally flew through the air. She
was not seriously injured but very stunned at the
sudden occurrence!

When she explained to the highway patrolman what had
happened he told her something that every driver
should know - NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH YOUR CRUISE
CONTROL ON. She thought she was being cautious by
setting the cruise control and maintaining a safe
consistent speed in the rain.

But the highway patrolman told her that if the cruise
control is on when your car begins to hydro-plane and
your tires lose contact with the pavement, your car
will accelerate to a higher rate of speed making you
take off like an airplane. She told the patrolman that
was exactly what had occurred.

The patrolman said this warning should be listed, on
the driver's seat sun-visor - NEVER USE THE CRUISE
CONTROL WHEN THE PAVEMENT IS WET OR ICY, along with
the airbag warning. We tell our teenagers to set the
cruise control and drive a safe speed - but we don't
tell them to use the cruise control only when the
pavement is dry.

The only person the accident victim found, who knew
this (besides the patrolman), was a man who had had a
similar accident, totaled his car and sustained severe
injuries.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Al - how did you know about my disputed parts?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I know about hydroplaning - it's a codeword in my marriage. Well, because we were so old and (heh, heh) wise already when we met, we already knew a lot of things like how to melt butter without burning it and wearing brown shoes with a black suit (don't) and be careful of hydroplaning. And we're both teachers and parents and tend to go into lecture mode too easily. So instead of saying "I already know not to pack the wet bathing suit with the dry underwear", we say "have you heard about hydroplaning?" BUT, I didn't know the part about cruise control and hydroplaning. I use CC a lot; otherwise my hand gets quite fatigued from the hand controls. I will tell DH I actually want to tal k about hydroplaning and he will laugh. Then he will tell me about the time his clutch fell out on the Cross-Bronx Expressway.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Ok.......so how does this address work??? LOL

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Like a vagrant, but that's cool. You ARE practically a vagrant.

xxxxx, C

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Harsh, Carrie!!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

No, vagrants are very cool. No fixed address, no commitments -- kind of like retired people on a no food diet. I'm not very politically correct tonight, am I? (Looking around for Michaela, expecting a lecture.)

I actually dreamt of being a trailer-type person instead of college, although I would have needed an address so I could vote. Kind of like a long-term camping trip. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

xx, C

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Wouldn't like to be a vagrant.......I'm too much of a homebody....it's hard enough to call 2 houses home! I keep looking for things as they are in the other house. We both keep thinking we have something here - but it's there.....yadda yadda yadda....No sympathy...I know! LOL

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

36, high of 43 with snow showers in the forecast. The heat is on!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

It's 30 here this morning, clear now but expected to be a partly cloudy day.
Mt. Washington got 10" of snow yesterday, and Sugarloaf U.S.A. recieved 5" of snow, we just got rain. (Thank goodness)
If anybody likes to ski Sugarloaf is a nice place to go. DS was so excited he got his snowboard out and started waxing it last night. I, on the other hand just covered my ears when they were talking about the "S" word!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I already tuned up my skis!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Have you ever been to Sugarloaf Deb? It's very pretty even for non-skier's like myself! I skate, but don't ski, tried it once, traumatized me......long story.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

No, never did ski in Maine. I've just become fairly good in the last few years, took awhile to not be afraid. Started in my 30's. I've been out west a couple times, and we have a small ski area near here we go every week. I don't skate well at all!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Ahhhh, I was put on a pair of skates when I was 3 years old. All 6 brothers skated and played hockey and little sister always wanted to go with the boys. So they stuck me in a pair of skates at an early age and I loved it even more than the boys did. When I was 10, I would go to the skating rink on a sunday afternoon at 1 and at 8pm my Dad would have to forcefully drag me off the ice. I only got frostbite once, most of the time my feet were moving so they were warm. The skating rink was directly across the street from my house. If I wasn't home when Mom got home from work, she would take out the binoculars and see if I was at the rink. I was ALWAYS there.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

24 here this morning as predicted.

Van Etten, NY(Zone 5a)

29 and windy. Snow showers last night. Brrr.
