Last one getting near 300 posts so I thought I'd start a new one. Today's big news for everyone seems to be the first frost. It's certainly the latest one since I've been in this house.
Today's Weather in Your Garden 5
Yep - frost last night on DH's car windshield. It was dark when I left for work, so I will see what happened to the plants when I got home.
Luckily, we pay attention to the weather, so last night we brought in the brugs, some spikey things in pots, and the Boston Ferns. :-)
Forgot to bring in one begonia, oh well.
I NEVER bring in begonias - mine are all annuals. Now at least they are!
It had such pretty burgandy and light green swirled leaves - thought it would look nice on the kitchen counter this winter. There's always next year.
Oh well, debilu. We can't remember them all, now, can we?
Hmm, no frost here yet. Hope I just did the last grass cutting for the year. Amy, your ferals are very cute!
Did you check it Deb? Is it a goner?
The leaves are mush, didn't know if it was worth chopping them off and seeing if new growth would appear.
You'll never know until you try! I have been outside. All the impatiens and most of the coleus, as well as the SPV, are mush - but hey, they're 75% of the way to being compost already! The coleus and the gorgeous begonia from the supermarket that were right near the house seem to be OK.
xx, Carrie
Today started out chilly, at 30 this AM. I was cold for most of the day, so stayed in and made a pot of soup, a pot of chili, and a pot of meatballs. And some oatmeal cookies. I'm done cooking for the week. Then it turned out rather nice this afternoon, raked some leaves and enjoyed a little sun.
Any pottie breaks?
Actually it was a very relaxing day, I like cooking, and it warmed up the house, now when I'm back to work tomorrow, there's less to do when I get home.
You must have a huge refrigerator!

Called my son, and he came and picked up half of it.
Think we may get colder tonight. Already down to 36.
according to weather channel.com, our low tonight will be 42 and the current temperature is 39.
huh?
We're allowed six degrees of separation.
LOL is that a bill of rights type right? Your right to 6 degrees of separation?
Amy, your kitties are very cute.....hope they are ok in the cold!! Where will you "house" them after you trap them? Good luck!
Sure sounds cold up there! You should have seen the back of our car loaded with some of my plants.....I've got to get busy here to get them in the ground! 90 degrees here.......I guess you always want what you can't have....like some cooler temps here. LOL!!!
i found online directions on how to build a feral cat shelter - gee, too bad i don't know anyone with unlimited access to a workshop with power tools, who makes weekly HD runs, and can get assistance from energetic college students when needed.
o wait - my DH is the technical director at a university theatre! it's been so LONG since i've seen him i almost forgot!
(but he's coming home tonight...)
☺
Hope the feral cats will not be topic number 1 - might not come home next time!!
victor - you seem to have moved...
I know - I keep hearing that. And I'm the last to know! Shows people here DO pay attention!
Amy, I'm confused too--just got a "severe weather alert" notice on my computer, warning of a freeze coming for Cape Cod tonight. Meanwhile, the local weather forecast says a low of 42 degrees for Yarmouthport.
What's a girl to believe? When I've got some houseplants out on the deck, and I'm far away in Washington DC. . .
36° here now.
brr. i want to hibernate. i am accomplishing nothing...
i think 1st job for DH here is taking the A/C out of the office window. hard to type - my hands are too cold!

Victor!!! Now that you've "moved" how will I be able to find you to do a "drive by" on one of my trips to Maine??? LOL
Alot of "mush" here after the frost - tried to remember everything I wanted to save from the gardens but one lone Plectranthus was still standing without cover :(
debilu, I might try the same thing for this poor plant, cut it way back and hope that it might come back from the "dead".
30 degrees this morning - and very dark. I am staying home today - caught another cold from my students. So I will mark - and some of my students will probably be in Boston for the Red Sox parade. :-)
Oh, Michaela! Sorry to hear that you are under the weather!! I hope you feel better very quickly! Grab those blankets, girl!!
The weather this morning is COLD!
Early morning temp of just 27* (although I am sure that in a couple of months I will think that 27 is warm!)
The humidity is still rather high at 81%, and there's no breeze at all.
It should get up to about 60* today (yeah. sure.)
Sunrise @ 7:20 and sunset @ 5:44
37 now but we did have frost again. Next few nights should be warmer. Looks like two great days ahead.
Thanks Candyce.
Bummer, Michaela! Try giving your students bonus points if they stay away from you when they're sick! LOL I hope you feel better soon! Chicken soup, lots of red bell peppers and tons of green tea!
Victor - I did notice that you and Debilu have recently moved to the Vagueness Valley. Me too. Aren't we paranoid??!!! LOL Maybe the break-in here did it for me.
Candyce - 27!! Brrrrrrrrrr! Do y'all wanta come for an RU down here at my house?? LOL
Victor did it for me!
Maybe we should all just put U.S.A.?!
Well, we're all northeast of somewhere, so maybe USA is good enough....with the planting zones at least! In the paper here this morning, there's a rash of car break-ins in our town and in surrounding towns, and get this.....a whole group of kids broke into a home and had a big party in it. I would have really been fuming if that had happened to us here.......not even an invitation to join the party!! Hmmmph!
Light frost last three nights here. Took out tender annuals but not enough for a killing frost yet. Warmer today, upper 50s to 60. Mostly cloudy with a light breeze. Happy Halloween everybody! BOO!
No frost this AM. About 60 and gorgeous now. Happy Halloween!!
it's too nice out to be stuck at work today...
Was a gorgeous day. Busy dad day - two class parties, a parade and then trick or treating. Done now. 62 and clear here right now.
