roadrunner, I was invited to the Plant Swap and would love it, but I'll have so little time there and haven't seen my son since last year, so will have to pass - but really appreciated the invitation! My son sent me an email yesterday with a link to the forecast for our visit and a comment "too bad you'll have bad weather while you're here" - kid's got a sense of humor - sunny, sunny and more sun - highs in the low 80's, overnight lows in the 60's :) Shorts and sandals packed!
Does anyone LIKE daylight savings time?
Hi all :)
Im not from NE but from central NZ! I have enjoyed reading your thread, Just thought Id put my 2c in and tell you all that DST started about 4 weeks ago for me. Its now 10:22 pm while the DG time is showing 4:58 am! (where is that time taken from anyway?)
Lena
Hi there, Lena!!
Feel free to join our band of renegades any time! We love the company from everywhere! I think that DG time is Eastern Time, (USA), but, knowing me, I could be VERY wrong!!
Hey Lena! Welcome aboard - the NE forum is a lot of fun with some very wonderful people. :-)
Hi Lena and welcome. I'd love to see some NZ photos!
Thankyou all for the warm welcome!
It says EDT on DG home page, is that Eastern time is is. Ah, now I know, thanks Candyce.
I love daylight savings time, and staying out in the garden till 9 or 10pm! Especially because it signifies spring and the oncoming sumer growing season. Im finally at the stage of planting my first little tomato and pepper seedlings out. Very carefully, into my most sheltered spots. Its warm enough now, but theres such terrible winds blowing over this part of the country in spring, its often wiser to sow and plant a little later than season allows. At least we ALWAYS have enough rain here. Too much most would say! The lower North Island (where I live), especially the West coast, is know for having the worst weather in NZ.
How is the NE climate? Colder than here I guess.
NZ photos... Do you mean flowers and gardens or landscapes? Heres a picture of 90 mile beach (actually 90km long, not miles). Its up in the far north where my mother lives.
Beautiful photo Lena
Hi, Lena, love your beach picture!
Lena, welcome to the NE of the US. You live in a country I always wanted to visit now I am getting to old to undertake such a long journey. Hope you will show more pictures of anything you would like to post for us.
Thank you all for birthday wishes, I have been down with a horrid cold for a week now, last time I had one I ended up with pneumonia but have been extra careful to stay away from doing too much just resting a lot, you can tell that by one look at my garden, not to mention my house
Feel better Maria!
Lean - yes to all of them! Nice beach shot.
Hey there, Lena! We "met" on another forum, and it's great to have you join us in the NE forum. As Candyce said, this is a terrific, friendly, inclusive bunch of rowdies here. I LOVE your beautiful beach photo. That is stunning! I am spending the winter in Fla. now and like you, I will be planting my tomatoes and one bell pepper plant tomorrow. I did all of my plants from seed last spring (started them down here and eliminated most of the luggage in order to bring them all back in the car to NH). But it's getting too late here to start my tomatoes here, so I broke down and bought some today. I don't know much about the varieties, but it will be fun to try something new. I will do my green beans and cukes from seeds, along with my mesculin greens for salads. Like Victor, I'd love to see some more NZ photos. Your garden perhaps???
Maria - so sorry to hear you are sick. I hope you feel much better soon. Stay warm and take good care of yourself! Pneumonia is NOT ALLOWED in your house!!! Let us know how you are doing!
welcome lena!
i was fortunate enough to visit NZ last year (in June - a bit chilly!) and i never wanted to leave. We only had time for North Island, and not even enough of that. I loved Rotorua - we stayed outside of town at a B&B/farm with miniature horses and cows, and regular sized sheep.
i REALLY want to go back.
(auckland from one tree hill on our last day. sigh.)

Wow - lucky you, Amy! I thought Auckland was in CA!
Ha, ha, Victor, you totally crack me up!
Humpty Dumpty once told me that!
Nice shots Lena! Nice to think it's Spring somewhere.
Beautiful shots---spring in NZ---let's all go hang out in the Australian forum for a few months----
How cold do you typically get in Winter?
Friend of mine lives down there----she barely ever gets a frost!!!
Lena, how very sweet and thoughtful of you, THANK YOU
Just great to see spring time blooms right now when everything, or almost everthing, here in the NE has been devoured by frost.
Frosts dont really happen that often in the north, but down here in Palmy we get frosts. No snow at sea level or in the city though. Down south they can get snow, and the ranges behind us are covered in snow in winter. NZ has such a varied climate. Parts are sub-tropical while others are sub-arctic.
This is up north in Opua, where my Dad lives. The view over the marina from the top of the hill behind his house.
Beautiful!!!
Very pretty view Lena!
What gorgeous spring photos, Lena. You will have us drooling all winter long!!
Good morning Candyce! Glad you like the pictures. Is it actually just after 7am where you are? Thats so early! Its 1.20 am here Im about to go to bed!
Here, have some more spring :) Tulips in my herb garden, 3 weeks ago. The tulip flowers are gone now, but the Irises have come out beautifully.
Goodnight, Lena
Beautiful NZ, and your tulips too, we have to wait now for a long time here before we see them again..
NZ is also a great place to go skiing when we have summer here, we were skiers, met quite a few people who did just that and loved it, I would have too.
Beautiful Lena! Love the bay shot. Keep them coming!
All this joy for spring and summer, its possible it may all end for me in a few weeks already! My Father rang me last night, with a proposition from his youngest brother. He would like me to come stay with him over the summer months and be a (paid) live-in nanny to his two young children, instead of spending the summer holidays working in a restaurant or nursery (Im still at university, final year next year). My uncle lives in Germany! So I might just be sharing your winter blues before long. And a much colder winter than Im used to.
My first thought was "what about my garden" I dont think I can expect my flatmate to give my 100 tomato plants and 40 pepper plants, (and everything else!) the due care they deserve, for three whole months. A bit of water every now and then will probably be the extent of it. Im so torn! Ive put so much effort into starting all my plants from seed, preparing the soil, planning the whole years crop rotations etc. Would hate to come home to a bunch of shrivelled plants (my precious plants!) sprawing along the ground amongs the weeds.... aaarrrrh what a nightmare for an organised and passionate gardener like me! I have two weeks to decide... and im sitting my final exams this week too. The garden calls.... wish the books could yell louder. Mmm. Back to my work.
Heres another picture of Russell, my childhood home town. Mum still lives there. Russell is quite special, it was the first landing place and Brittish settlement, back in the late 1700s. Also NZ's first capital "city" (its a tiny village, full of historic buildings) so its a bit of a tourist attraction, even to New Zealanders. Lovely.
Don't take the job!! If you do, I can come and mind your plants. Nice shots. Maybe we should start a thread for you? I see you're kind of in NE NZ so you fit right in anyway!
Lena, your photos are wonderful! I feel like we have had a personal tour of your beautiful area, and I appreciate your taking time out to post those great pics!!
OMG - 100 tomato plants??!!! And all those peppers too? I can see how you would be really torn by this decision! Like Victor, I vote for staying in NZ!!! LOL Having started my tomatoes and peppers from seed last year, I know just how attached you can get to them....it's almost like giving birth to them instead of just buying them in a store! Here's an idea - how about having your uncle fly his kids over to your place for the summer....and tell him to double your salary accordingly. Then you can teach the kiddies how to garden!! LOL
Amy - your NZ photo was gorgeous too! I'd really love to get there someday!
Good luck with your decision, Lena!! Let us know what you decide. If you go back and look at the photos you posted for us, I think your decision might make itself. Ha!!
Lena, quite a change from NZ to Germany but must say an interesting one. Do what YOU think is best for you and every thing will fall in its proper place
Just love all your photos and yours too Amy, lucky you to have been there
Where in Germany, Lena?
I lived there for four years (in the Frankfurt area) and HATED the winters there. It got cold and damp, no snow, but no sun either for months on end!!!
i was ready to move to NZ as soon as we got back. Unfortunately, i lack any of the desired skills.
Even in just the parts of North Island we visited, NZ was about 5 of the most beautiful places i've ever been. I'm dying to go back and see Christchurch and the fjords in the South. And Wellington, the capital which has a museum called Te Papa which looks fantastic.
And people are SO nice.
I imagine the fjords look like in Noway, they are just beautiful, they took my breath away
