The Bittersweet blooms of Fall Part II

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

The bridal veil is a willing volunteer here too. I had a hanging basket of it ~ the basket is gone and it grows in flower beds, around the ac unit ~ here and there.

I lined a vented scoop with sphagnum moss and potting soil and planted a tiny sdullcap in it. Fortunately it was small enough I could soak the whole thing in a water pail. It required lots of moisture. Cute as the tiny plants grew out thru the vent holes too. But after a summer of watering, I need to rethink that one.

I bought a pitiful purple skullcap in Buna at a nursery that was going out of business. It came back really pretty, but the blooms don't last too long before it was pitiful again. It's still green, but I miss the blooms. Evidently I am doing something wrong with that one.

I really like that scoop Pod. I wonder if you could line it with thin plastic (to keep the moisture in) and poke just a few holes for drainage in it. In my mind's eye, I can see the silver bells spilling out of the top and tight little flowers peeking through the vents.

I like unusual things as planters. All summer long, every time I go to the thrift stores or garage sales, I have been looking to see what I could use as a planter that doesn't look like a planter.

This is my first year to do container gardening and I really like it. I did notice that the plants in the containers didn't get nearly as big as those in the ground. If our ground wasn't so darn hard to dig through, I'd probably put more things in the ground. I'm on the lazy side too though so I just park planters wherever I want something to grow. Sometimes it's a big hit (sun wise) and other times I have to move things. Full sun around here is not the same as full sun in other parts of the country. I think that labels ought to have sun indicators + sun indicators for Texas. HAHAHA

We live in a city neighborhood now and I'd love to live out in the country some place on some land (read several acres just for gardening). Having plants in containers will make it much easier to take them with me whenever we find a place. Some day.......

Pots and containers here too. That way when there is a bare spot, it will brightenl it. And you can find the lighting conditions best suited too. And it is a lazy means of gardening until it comes to watering. I do the same at fleas ~ always looking for suitable containers for planting. Great fun!

Have any of you grown one of these? This has bloomed nonstop. I posted a photo earlier but it now has more blooms. Amazing! And pretty foliage too.

I've always known that to be Jacobina. Yes I've grown it and I love it. I had it in a pot last year and it came back this spring for me. I did manage to put it in the ground this year and it bloomed like crazy.... until the October Rose took over that area of the fence line. It was buried under the foilage of the ORH. It's still there, now that I can see that area again, but not blooming right now. It's one of my favorite plants because you can almost watch as those pink petals come out. I'll have to go take a look at it again and see if anything is happening. :-)

No blooms, but it looks like it will bloom again before it gets cold.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

I thought I'd throw this pic in since we're closing in on winter. These are some Dianthus that I started from seed this spring. The package was labeled Cottage Pinks and there's a variety of different types, but this year they bloomed at different times. Hopefully, after being reset this winter, they'll bloom in unison next year.

Very nice, Bronc. I planted some of those earlier this year. They bloomed sporadically all summer long (and still are) and I'm hoping that they'll do better next year.

I don't have a photo but noticed this morning that my Copper Canyon Daisies are absolutely bursting with blooms today. I'll try to get a photo this weekend. I love the fall-blooming stuff!!

I don't know whether to call this late or early, Pink Snow, sasanqua camillia's buds about to bust open. And the weather is still mild yet here, haven't got our first frost yet. :-)

Thank you, thank everyone. I recently became interested in raising cats. after seeing them being victimized by predators in the gardens. This new finding/enjoyment made me more aware of our environment and appreciate the beauty of the nature in ten folds. I'm deeply graceful of our blessings.

Kim, I'm putting that hibiscus acetosella and that salvia on my wish list! They're exquisite!

Here is a pic of my Dwarf Tickseed's first bloom. I planted it early last spring and the slugs went to work on it right away. I slowed down their progress by putting out beer bottles but by mid-summer they had almost killed it. I was desperate to stop them, so I started asking everyone I knew if they had any Idea how to get rid of slugs. That's when a friend of mine turned me onto Sluggo, an all-natural slugicide. I got a can and emptied it into all of my beds. Two days later, there was not a slug to be found. The Tickseed gradually came back and now I have my first bloom IN NOVEMBER!

Beautiful bronc! I've got pups of the salvia coming up now so I'll tag one for you. The acetosella I grew from seed, it's pretty easy, I should still have some but haven't dug through my seed box yet. On the list for this weekend...

Anna, my skullcap is still going strong, too. Don't you just love that plant?

The little blue one is also still blooming. I potted it up so I can protect it. Hope that next year I'll have bigger starts to share.

Kim you must save me some of those Pups too ... they are absolutely gorgeous. Awww Dawn its good to see you! Btw I got some thing I need to give you. )

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

pbtxlady: I am saving the skullcap for the spring. You said it wasn't cold hardy.Sounds like it will be worth the wait.
TJ- where did you get Sluggo?
Who would have known we would be enjoying this weather and lovely blooms at this time of year. It's fantastic!

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Looks like we all grow similar plants. My yellow salvia is still giving me blooms. Also have the red leaf hibiscus that is in a pot and huge. I have several small ones in pots from cuttings. Will whack the big one and try to over winter in the GH. In past years they got very buggy.

Did someone say that they keep their hibiscus in the ground and it makes it ? That would be a good thing.

When I began to wander through the garden I was suprised to see that there are probably 20 or more plants still blooming. And here it is just a few days until Thanksgiving.
