the autumn sedum shows no signs of slowing down.
The Bittersweet blooms of Fall Part II
There are lots more but think I have held the floor long enough. Don't want this to turn into a philibuster. This was a good idea, Bronc. Made me realize just what I have to be thankful for today. In that this is Thanksgiving week, want all of you to know, you have blessed my life each and every day and I always look forward to our little get togethers.
God bless you,
Christi
LouC, the plant which you said you didn't know the name for it? Does it overwinter outdoors for you? It really favors one I got from Riverland on the MSG forum. The Uruguayan firecracker plant... http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1274/ She sent it in Oct and said the hummingbirds love it.
I don't yet, Pod. I just started the pond in June of this year and am not sure just what will make it and what won't. Thanks for the link. I will check it out.
Not the pond flower but the 5th one you posted. Lovely blooms on all by the way!. It is great fun to see all the different blooms still delivering!
Oh, that one. I have been calling it a firecracker but was unsure of myself. Just planted firecracker seed that I received from IslandShari and she says they will be red. That's what I get for not learning the latin names. Too many plants called the same that are not. Guess that should be a winter project for me.
Christi,
The shampoo ginger is ardorableeeeeeee! I love those "firecrackers" too, reminds me of an unknown flowers that we used to pick and tasted the nectar out of them blooms when I was a little girl!

Thanks Lily, I was so shocked when it bloomed. Early spring I purchased the ginger root from OnaLee's (in the Gardening section). I really didn't expect a bloom this year. The plants have done very well and I am just crossing my fingers that they are root hardy. I have lots of tropicals that come back the next year. All depends on that ONE BIG FREEZE that we sometimes get. It would probably overwinter easily for you. Very little difference in our zones.
Christi,
I'm looking at making some orders with Zone9tropical. I've been hunting for a blue ginger for the longest, now I'm falling for your red ginger. Have you a link to OnaLee's website? I'd love to purchase those cuties gingers.

Lily, hopefully I have given the right link to Garden Watchdog. I can't remember just what all I ordered but everything came at the right time and performed very well. I would order from her again.
I think she also sells on e-bay. I don't do ebay so don't really know much about it. I got more roots than I ordered and they all came up. Also got an extra that turned out to be a native Texas hibiscus.
Here I am again at a loss because I don't know the latin.
Thank you, I bookmarked the webpage. Will shop 'til I drop for those cuties....thanks again. Kristi.

I don't know how I have missed this wonderful thread! We are going to have a very rare cold spell come in Wednesday night at midnight with the lows in the high 30's......so unusual for us this early.
I think i better get my camera out tomorrow as plants are not going to enjoy the cold as much as the people do .
Just be sure everything has been well watered. A dry freeze is devastating. I know from experience. Most things will recover if the have been thoroughly watered beforehand.
I almost hate to see the cold weather arrive, as so many things are blooming beautifully in my backyard right now. Copper Canyon Daisy; Salvia garanitica; Mountain Sage; Mexican Firebush; Pineapple Sage; Mexican Mint Marigold; Mealy Blue Sage; pink Skullcap; Dianthus; Blackfoot Daisies; Bat Faced Cuphea; white, red & Theresa Salvia Greggii; Blue Mist Flower; not to mention an unusually colored Lantana camara (it's yellow is more of a "buttery" color than any I've ever seen). And the Yaupon and Possum Haw Holly berries are turning bright red. Fond memories and grand plans for '08 are all I will be left with after the cold front zaps everything. But what a show it has been. :-)
Carla
Bananna, I got the Sluggo from The Greenery in Waxahachie.
LouC, Marvelous blooms! You're right, this thread was a great idea, but I didn't start it. Podster started the original thread.
Gessie, can't wait to see what you 've got! We're on the edge of our desk chairs!
Loonie, this year really has been great for Texas gardeners! Let's keep our fingers crossed for '08.
Lily, those are gorgeous!
Beautiful pics! It is always depressing when the first big cold front comes and kills everything. But then we have something to look forward to in the spring.
:) Kim
I am impressed that you are getting roses to bloom in a basement with gro lights! She is wonderful lookig! i think I am jealous.
gessigail; the trick is....this happened by accident, lol. I've to defoliage this standard Rose because I forgot to spray it on a regular basic. While at it, I pruned and reshape the tree. I fertilized it in real good. That was 1st week of Oct. 4 weeks later, it formed buds like you wouldn't believe, just in time for me to bring it indoor to enjoy for the rest of the year. :-)
You can bring a rose inside????? I am shocked. Oh my goodness, it already hard to find a bed in my house with all the gro light stands. I want to try roses.
Wow Carla!!! That is beautiful, it looks like you gave it just the right place.
Josephine.
That is gorgeous, Carla!
I should've posted a photo of Patricia's liatris that she gave me last year. They were beautiful too. I put Sweezel's mint marigold next to it, and I'm hoping they will be blooming at the same time next year.
Jessigail; not only I can bring, I've too. In my zone, standard Rose will suffer the mild winter. It could get down to the teens, sometime. I've to move it indoor every year to prevent it from frost. You can get a big pot with wheel on them at Lowes and HD, I do that for my tropicals that are too large to move about. :-)
Remind me to ask Pat for some of that Mexican Mint marigold I have just the place for it.
My phlox drummondii has it's first bloom! November has been a good month for blooms. I'll try to get a pic over the weekend.
I have lots of Mexican mint marigold and liatris mucronata, so if anyone wants some, just remind me when we start our next swap list. I saw a display bed at ARE a few years ago in the fall with pale lavender chrystanthemums, Mexican mint marigold, and tithonia all blooming at the same time. It was beautiful! I keep trying for that combo, but something usually happens to the tithonia (like I don't get it planted or the grass smothers it!) I do much better with perennials than with annuals.
Oh Pat we don't want to succumb to Annual anyway, do we? lol
LouC ~ I found this link interesting about your "shampoo ginger". http://www.killerplants.com/herbal-folklore/20040119.asp Thought you might too...
good morning all. Thank you, thank you, Podster. You couldn 't know that I am going to Hawaii in February. Been trying to learn as much as I could before going. Will be staying at the home of another DGer and I can hardly contain myself I am so excited. I didn't know much of anything about this great plant other than being smitten by its bloom. I did finally cut it but couldn't bring myself to *milk* it. It is in a vase on my desk. Maybe next year I will get multiple blooms and will try using the shampoo/conditioner. Now that would be fun.
