I found a BIG one today!!!

Beth,
That one would make a nice mini-trash can. You lucky U...
A.
So sad they just throw these things away....
Wow!
Wow! That looks great! No primer, huh. Do you look it?
I think you could do this with old paint cans too....only they would rust eventually.
That looks great!
Hi Beth, I've spent the day being inspired by your pictures and was wondering where you order the Japanese seeds when you're not trading for them. Any good folks on Ebay? Also when you grow indoors do you choose dwarf varieties or less invasive kinds than say Heavenly Blue or the like? I read about how you pinch the tops, but just cant imagine as I remember how they grew all over my whole studio last summer! I'm into training clematis vines in interesting patterns on big fences and bamboo trellises and was wondering about advice on good MGs to try and manipulate and control like that. (like bonsai topiary) I bought many Japanese seeds on Ebay but I'm so new at it, your response could save me some painful experimentation... oh nevermind, experimenting with flowers is never painful, unless the squirrels eat them... thanks!
so. main question: Best kinds to keep growing indoors & artfully manipulate.
& where to get rare (japanese) seeds.
Soulja, best kind to grow indoors are the Ipomoea nils. They are available from hobbyists in the US so you don't have to order them from overseas.
oh great! I just got some from Onalee. Thanks!
one more question which you've answered somewhere, but I can't seem to find: what kind of grow lights do you use? I remember you said you got a good one on Ebay but I don't remember what kind. There are so many to choose from!
i just can't look at these pictures enough! I have serious MG envy.
I use a 1000 watt Metal Halide in the grow room. I also have a 400 watt High Pressure Sodium in the living room.
Hi Beth - Have you noticed a difference in the response of the plants to the MH or the HPS(?)...any noticeable differences in initial growth response, foliage, flowering or in seed production(?)...any differences within the same species to the different lighting(?)...
TTY,...
Ron
That's a good question, Ron! If I had plants under the exact same conditions with the only difference being the lights then I could answer it. Unfortunately, I have the MH plants in a consistantly heated room with a humidifier. The HPS light plants are in the living room in a bright window + the light and we tend to keep the house quite cool and don't tamper with the humidity.
I am thinking of moving all the plants to the back room just to have them all in one place.
I'd be interested to hear of actual observations from people growing under both types of lights. My information has come from commercial growers about what type of light to use for what purpose, but I have not had the chance to verify this.
Hi guys. Earnest student here. I just installed the SUN itself in the studio and put MY NEW SPROUTS under it which popped right up under the bluer bulbs in the smaller heat/humidity chamber! This light I have now is just ... WICKED! HPS 1000 watts and I had no idea ... I had to move everything around to create a space big enough which means new countertops for my printmaking space. Too many hobbies for one room! I hope someone answers your question, but in the mean time I just wanted to share the thrill. thanks again.
Just an observation from my experience with sprouts...
I had read in other threads that you need to have the sprounts really close to the light so they won't get leggy.
This is probably true for flourescent grow lights, but if you put sprouts too close to a MH or HPS grow light they will shrivel within ten minutes! Believe me, because I tried it.
i think you just now saved about 120 infants! I watched them for a few hours under the Monster light and the ones directly under it dried out a bit and the darker green ones lightened up to yellowish. I shut it down and put the blue bulbs back over the newborns about 1 1/2 feet up, tucked them in with plastic walls, a radiator on low and a cool mist humidifier. I think I have to raise the light up a bit even when they get bigger. It's about 4 feet from the table and it seems to need 6 or 8 feet. I think I read 6 - 8 feet from the tops of the plants. does that sound right?
Let's see...I have my pots on the floor and the light is hanging from the ceiling rafter. I think there is at least 5 or 6 feet between the soil level and the light. I'll check better when I go home tonight and measure. The good thing about the big grow lights is that they generate enough heat that I don't have to heat the room during the day when they are on. I still have to heat overnight, though.
I checked, it's about 5 feet between the top of the planters and the light.
