Ipomoea setosa blooms
Byndeweedblooms 3
Beth, Love the setosa color.
Thanks, it fades out to a light pink later in the day.
Beth - Thanks for posting all the lovely blooms! Pretty Kikyo!! I love the solid red Scarlett O'Hara! I do like red and that one is an eye-catcher for sure!!!
And I especially appreciate the setosa photos because I am currently growing one. Love the thorny-looking vine! And I like the leaves, too! Can't wait to see mine blooming! Do you get a lot of blooms on it every day?
Beth, thanks for all these wonderful photos, they are just wonderful.
My Setosa is still on the front porch in but. Time to bring it in. we had a very light frost that nipped the zuccinnis on 23 sep, but none since.
Nonetheless it is chilly at night. I hear the electric blancket calling me, good night. Frank
All beauties Beth!!
Good to hear from you, Frank! I was wondering if you had disappeared....
Thanks to all! Setosa did not bloom all summer but just started last week. There is a bloom at least every other day. I am hand pollinating and hoping for seeds even though they are pretty easy to come by.
Those are so pretty Beth.
Very lovely flowers Beth, aren't those surprises nice? I've been just lurking at least once a day lately.. SOH is looking real good, I like that color.
A.
Are your blooms done for the year, A?
No, I got some inside the house, but haven't had time to do much of anything. There are several still blooming outside but the cold has stunted any pod production out there.
These are inside, Fuji Shibori bloomed today, an unnamed white purp with tan seeds, and several others of the species, but have flagstone getting set in and well, it is very hectic around here. All the ones that I am hoping to get seeds from are inside, the rest stayed out..
I would love to trade some with you if you can or are interested. D-mail me.
I've been taking a few photos, but been feeling under the weather a bit.
A.
Sorry to hear that! I am getting a lot of seeds from the ones inside and out. I just had to set up a humidifier for the ones inside because they were looking too dry....but it was great for the maturing seeds pods! They dried out quick!
I won't be sure about all the seeds I have for a month or so, then I can better tell what I have to trade.
A, hope you start to feel better soon.
Thanks guys,
The plants outside that already had pods, still are growing, but the new flowers that bloom (small as they are) are not forming pods. Most that are now inside and blooming are keeping some of their pods. Either way, it has been a great year, I can't imagine how all my plants in Southern Cal (desert area) even survived those temps. We had up to 117 for a couple of weeks and I had to water everyday and they were all done with in August. So, I am very happy here.
Good to hear you are still getting seeds too.
I'm starting the sorting this week, there are some that still don't have any seed ready at all, and you know there are 3 or 4 types of plants that did not produce not ONE seedpod and I tried hand pollination on almost every flower (Dwarfs, White Reversed Tube, Chocolate Picotee, Kawaii's).
Did you have any like that? Anyone?
A.
A - I had one vine that didn't produce any seed pods. And another vine that produce 1 single seed pod. (I will be growing that one out again in the Spring!)
I am only harvesting seeds for about 22 MGs currently. See this link for my seed collections in a cup. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4098922
I have been noticing something interesting with my Yuguruma Blizzard vine. The blooms that have a strong blizzard pattern are the only flowers of 10-20 daily flowers on the one vine that are producing pollen. The more solid with white edges are not producing any pollen that I can see. So I have been using the pollen from the Blizzard looking blooms to try to pollinate the other blooms with no pollen. I have been able to collect more seeds from this vine (even with few seed pods) because each pod has 4-5 seeds. Apparently the Blizzard strain is a much more fertile strain. I have seen that same thing on Karen's grow-outs. My purple blizzard blooms make more seed pods that the solid purple blooms. Interesting, huh? Anyone else notice this on their vines?
I grew 5 Oreheme JMGs and hand pollinated every bloom. While they bloomed quite well, I only got ONE small seedpod!
A.....I just found my package of lavendar moonvine seeds that I grew this year and they came from YOU.
They did great!
Oh, that has to be from seeds I bought at JLHudson, they have one that say's small moonflower, the flower is small... but a pretty color. There is also Turbinata. I'll go check my package to see exactly what it said. I grew it and saved seeds, those are from 2005 seed. I'll also compare the seeds from both.
the envelope you sent says "turbinata" on it.
becky,
That is a pretty good setup. I've been using the large coin envelopes to dry my seeds in and I have tabs behind each category... finally, i'm getting somewhat organized..lol. I too do not like to use plastic baggies until they are completely dry, and you can just let them sit in paper envelopes till they dry, also those silicia packs get thrown into the box for good measure. In CA I used to dry them on a paperplate in the sun for a few days, if any weevil was around it would leave... they hate the hot sun. (especially HollyHock seeds)
I got some plastic containers with lids that are stackable at Lowes, they are selling them for storage for Christmas ornaments. Also, they have a handle on the lid. I plan to store my seeds in there for the winter. They come to containers per stack and I'll take a photo of them also.
