The second, if you look to the left side, you will see a little string. A root. Went ahead and potted and Camille is doing great.
Rose has roots now what?
Ga, thanks so much. I have started all my coleus in moistened perlite and they love it. For your cuttings. If you want them to stay small, pinch their top leaves off, this will cause them to be bushy, which is what you want. If they get leggy, take a cutting size from the top and pop it in the same pot and the mother plant. She'll grow. They are pretty easy that way. Or you can take cutting from top, pull out old base and repot the top. take off all leaves but the top and make sure leaf joints are in the soil. Don't know the technical name. The best way to keep them bushy instead of leggy is pinch their heads and have them under a low light, so they don't want to grow taller. Do you use fish emulsion? Nastiest stuff in the world and recommend finding an unfrequented place to use, but it sawed my coleus babies' lives. DO NOT over water. Mistake #2 for me. Let them dry up pretty good and then water. Have a spray bottle around. Whenever you walk by, give them a squirt. Helps with them thinking it is humidity somehow. Finally, when you do water them, as 2 tsp (or was it table spoon, I'll find out) of hydrogen peroxide per gal. this kills bugs and adds Oxygen to the soil. I think that is it. DR TA......OH, Dr TA did I forget anything. Dr TA in one of the specialist in my Coleus Care Center for cuttings. lol.
Editted for stupidity.

Pupil: Very good editing job. Excellent information. Thanks,
gloria
;^)
Eeeeeewwwwwee! Fish Emulsion? What is that? It doesn't even sound good and what use would I have for something so gross?
And pupil, by the way, per my 14 yr. old son your little symbol there (although you and I know what it was) is something very dirty.
Gee, I thought it was a cute "smiley face" :-)
Great, I have been sending dirty messages to half of DG. My luck. What about this one
*^).
Fish emulsion is great for brugs, hibiscus and coleus. I am sure it is for lots of other things, but I haven't made it that far. I have asked the coleus gurus how one emulshes a fish, but no one answers me. I am beginning to think I don't want to know, simply based on its smell. I think it helps with the rooting part. Also is a fertilizer I think. One tablespoon per gallon, I hope.
DR TA, PAGING DR TA, we need technical info on how emulshiation is done and the benefits!
no, I just thought it was funny. I was looking and my son says 'hey mom, why is some chic winking at you?' apparently, it was the semicolon cause it makes it look like a wink like 'hey baby, i want you' or 'I'm checking you out.' if it were a colon like :^) it would have been fine. my son, who thinks we here at dave's are all old farts, says he had no idea that we were so 'lively'.
where do you even buy fish emulsion?
I thought fish emulsion was the dirty water from the fish tank, Like fish poo, I dont know
They sell it at nurseries. That is where I got mine. Well look what I found. I don't need DR. Ta after all.

What's "DR"?
TARogers is his ID. I just call him DR Ta.
well, my update....one week in the fish tank and zippo...nothing....nada...
SO, not being one to accept failure that easy, i took all the plants out and added peat moss
into the cups ...(i had nothing in there b4....which was probably stupid...but hey)...anyway, i will let
you know the next step...
Hey sticks, if I posted my god awful plain rectangular house on cottege gardening, would you come out and play???
That was an interesting article. Now I know also, thanks
I am just a humble servant DR. Ta. I though it was interesting too.
Okay - on Saturday, Oct. 27 I started four rogusa roses (Polaris) one moss rose (William Lobe), 4 Showbiz (floribunda), 4 Betty Harkness (floribunda), and one Westerland (gee, I hope nobody becomes grumpy about me starting named roses!) And four "mystery" roses.
Here what has happened so far - the rogusas, the moss rose, and the mystery roses are still doing fine - though they seem potentially dripping in moisture! A couple of the other roses have turned black, but many are developing leaf buds - and I suspect roots.
So - at what point do I pot them up? I mean - it's only been 10 days. The other thing is - what can I do to stop me from always checking them - really, you would think I taking care of little kids! I am always checking, and every once in a while I even pull one out! I know this can't be good - but I have no time frame to work by. I am sure that 10 days is too soon - but how long until I give up? When all the stems are black? Also, these roses are in LOTS of humitidy - at what point will this affect them negatively? Like - will they rot soon?
Other observations - only roses that were put in coir have had stems that turned black - and only after they were watered a 2nd time. so maybe peat pellets are the only way to go with this system.
Cheers
seandor...if you can figure out what you can do to stop looking at yours.....tell me cause it must be a sickness...i am looking at mine everyday.....
pupil..put it on cottage and what you want me to do and i will do it!!!
Sticks - i know what you mean! I must check them at least twice a day - poor little things might have a better chance - but I can't resist. sigh . . . .
any ideas when I should try to pot the rose cuttings, anyone?
STOP LOOKING!!! I know, I know, it is so hard, but what if you are damaging your roots? Have someone hold your arms behind your back whenever you have to glance at them. Create an electrical barrier with a dog collar you wear so it time you get close, it zaps you. How do those sound. lol.
I read today somewhere, and I don't know where, that it can take 10 to 30 days in a hydro system. I will look for that info later on this evening.
Well, I know I have a couple to pot up - but they were started a month ago - the traditional way, not a hydro system.
I will try to be good and not keep looking - I don't actually pull the stems out, I just lift the cups and make sure the rose cuttings are not completely drenched in moisture.
Ahhh, justification. lol.
I've been reading your thread with great interest and kicking myself for selling of the fish tank, ah well, who knew..LOL
I do grow roses, but proprogate in growing medium. If your roses cuttings have roots, go ahead and pot em up. They are going to need a light source to continue growing. You can find cheap grow lights. Just watch the distance between the light and the plant so you don't burn em. I have some teas, but really prefer the rugosas and moss roses. They are tough and lovely. I have 6 cuttings from Thomas Lipton going great guns. Although it only blooms once a year, I love the fragrance and the rose hips from it are wonderful. Please keep posting I'm watch with great interest. I'm currently taking a Master Gardener class and one of my fellow class mates has been talking about hydroponics. I've already suggested she hook up to DG, but I'll let her know about this thread. Thanks for the input!
Well, reporting in on my attempt so far - well most died - and many had mold growing on them. (Experiment started Oct. 27) Mangaged to save 2 "Showbiz", 3 "Polaris" and 1 "mystery rose" (floribunda). I have no idea if they have roots - but I potted them anyway since they were still green
I have cleaned everything and started again. This time I took longer and thicker stems (those seem to survive better).
Instead of covering them, I have left them open, but I have the air stone running all the time. There is a water heater. So moist, warm air below - fresh moving air above.
The water contains starter, super-thrive and a bit of bleach. And the cups have holes in the bottom as well as slits along the sides.
I know it is late in the year to take cuttings - so I am not expecting much.
I would sure be interested in how others are doing :-)
