I think I'm going to lose my Brugs! What am I doing wrong? 2

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

UGHHHHHHH!!!! I lost my entire response!!!! Why can't this be "fixed" so that this doesn't always happen?!?!?!

My cuttings are doing wonderfully, fantastic, gung-ho, etc., etc., etc.

I read somewhere that versicolor is a reference to a brug that blooms white or yellow and then turns a different color gradually.

Here is my first brug with her second set of blooms. She is supposed to be a versicolor peach, but the second set of blooms came on inside the house and now they are more pink than peach.

Before I brought the brug inside the blooms came on first yellow then went to peach/white. Inside they came on white and went to pink/white. I don't know if the lighting just makes it appear different, or if the temperature/lighting change affected it of if my eyes are the problem.

I would be interested in knowing if anyone else has noticed a different coloring inside than when their brug was outside.

mine stay in the ground. i doubt that yors in the pic is a versi because thos are usually long, slender, and pendant

Hi Everyone! I've been so busy, no time for DG....... I'm home sick today and I'll try to catch up. TL it's fun to see the cuttings I sent growing so well. I really enjoyed your Christmas plants pics, too! Charlenesplants, I think you have an Insignis Pink-that's what the bloom form and color reminds me of... If you want a Peach Versi, there should be plenty next Fall, I sent out quite a few this year. I can send some to you, too. I might even end up with extra rooted ones in Spring... I'll keep you in mind. I have a bunch of all kinds of brug cuttings in a mini greenhouse in the basement. I've had a few blooms down there (in the basement). I really want to post my little Alex bloom, it was soo cute!
Dangitgirl, you're brug is to be treasured! Lovely! Kim, I love how you've implemented your outdoor furniture to be plant stands, that's really a good idea. I still have my furniture outside for lack of space inside. I wanted to use the tables, at least, but they are too big for my space. I've had a bout of mealy worms on Maya, but she still managed a flush; it looked funny, no leaves and a bunch of blooms. Pendulous pink and Peach Versi put on a show as well and then the Alex had 1 bloom of the 4-5 buds it was putting on. The others shriveled up, I hope it's because of the shock of being put in the basement. I really didn't notice the colors being different, the blooms lasted longer inside and the basement sure smelled better! Once Christmas is past and decor is put away, I will start seeds, it will keep me going till spring (and you guys). We've had snow but really it's been mild here, thus far. TL, you have family members that are plant people? All those lovely plants, need care when you're at school. I have a white poinsetta, but I haven't given it proper lighting to change bract color. My mom has both my Grandma's Christmas cactus's and she does wonderful with them. Both gma's have long ago passed, but their plants still bring us joy. I imagine, I will be the proud caregiver someday. I have 3 sisters, but I'm the only one really interested in plants. I'll try to check in more often but you're all in my thoughts when I can't.

Thanks Kim, it's a cold or flu, lots of congestion. My "mini greenhouse" is about 4 ft tall 2ft X 1 1/2ft... picked it up at Big Lots for $20 a couple years ago. Has a zippered plastic cover. I'll post a pic of my basement, looks pretty jungley, things are doing okay down there, I'm seeing growth or they are staying green... a few more months to go and then it's back outside! YEA! The 2 new 4-bulb fluorescent lights is keeping everything going... passionvines, my first plumeria, brugs, hibiscus, EE's, ferns, cacti.... I'm hopelessly addicted. I have a seed pod on Maya, but they tell me it may germinate, but the seedlings will be all white and die. I left it, it's interesting watching it over winter. IF it matures, I'll probably try a few, anyway, just for the experience.

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

AuntB sure hope that's NOT the flu that can really knock ya back.
Do you like ginger? I always make a stong batch of gingerroot tea and
drink it all day. I hope they still have those GH"s next season.Would you like some seed if they mature? They are noid I just want to see what grows. Let's see the jungle :)

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks auntb. I love brugs and I'm just now getting started with them. I have cuttings from a noid white and a noid yellow that are growing now. I am including another pic from a different angle of the "peach versicolor"/ pink insignis. Do you have this one? I would be glad to share it with you. Thanks for the offer of the "real" peach versicolor I would love to have it.

AuntB I really believe in those flu shots. Did you get one? If not, then as soon as this little bout is over, you should get one. I use Nyquil daytime and nighttime when I am sick and it seems to get me through the worse part. I hope you feel better soon.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

hope you get better AuntB! glad you liked the christmas cactus! none of my relatives like plants like i do, but my dad likes them ok, but his passion is coins. my g-pa has an account on DG, i think is name is HLM he and my dad are the reason i like plants, but his interests are more in vegetable gardening . especially tomatoes. he used to have a HUGE vegetable garden, but over the years it has gotten smaller, and now it is gone, since they are trying to move down here. here is a pic of their garden. my g-ma on the same side also likes gardening, but more in the way of hostas roses etc.

PS the dark green grass in the pic is where the garden used to be. the standing man is a person they hired to care for the yard this year. H (that is what we call my g-pa) is the one inside the fence kneeling. oh yeah..... i forgot... this is the g-pa that calls me TL

where's amanda?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I was thinking about Amanda and Jan.. They are probably busy, too. I'm home for bad weather today. I went in and gathered some stuff up to work from home, and drove back in snow and ice. Luckily the sand trucks were out. I drive 35 miles one way. Kim, I don't have any gingeroot, wonder if the powdered ginger would work? I've been drinking hot green tea and some pomegrante tea I need to use up. I'm feeling somewhat better today, but still not back to full capacity.. I used to have a big vegetable garden when the girls were little. I stayed home with them and grew and canned and stored vegies in the freezer. We lived in the 1952 Flood plane so the soil was black river dirt...I knew someone in your family enjoyed plants of some kind TL. As we grow older, I think we try to have things that require less maintenance... I have hosta, too and I love the effect in the yard. I only fuss with them in the dry heat of summer or in the fall a few times if we've had no rain. I was so busy at work, when I was there this week I had no time to even check in here, let alone post some pics, I've been wanting too. Kim I'll see what I have on the camera and download to this computer...(IF the phone (work) doesn't keep bugging me). Charlene, I'll keep you in mind for the insignis pink, but honestly, right now, I'm wondering what I'll do with all I have rooting if they survive... I am partial to pink..... Remind me in April about the versi peach and I'll see what I can do.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

DHS, I think I've been referring to you as TL, if that is a special thing with your grandpa, I can call you Trent, or DHS... how wonderful you carry on the family gardening interest!

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Hey, hey, hey...it's "me" (jumping up and down)...I'm here. Amanda appears to be MIA...forums are "slower" due to Winter...Anyone starting any new seeds or waiting til after Christmas? I just got a product from a co-op, "Messenger Seed Treatment", and am anxious to give it a try. I just got some yucca seeds (red and a pink) and want to give them a try. I tried the paper towel/coffee filter method last time and nada so I'm gonna give this a try...wish me luck?!

AuntB, feel better soon! Maya is growing very well in the wet floral foam/oasis---YEAH!!! Still have a couple of Miss Anna---those are awesome and they're Ying :)

Just "ME"...Jan

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Hey AuntB! glad you are getting better :) I use powdered ginger also.
I like to work from home especially when under the weather.Green tea and pomegrante sound great. I'm with you about Amanda and Jan.
Pink rules!!...then orange :*) and so on an so on....lol
Be Well

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oh! a Y on Miss Anna???? How exciting! Best wishes on your seed sprouting, I'm waiting until January when I feel like the walls are closing in.. The phone is kinda "irritating", but I DID inform all my people what was going on and gave them my number.. it'll stop ringing about 4 cause stuff I'm dealing with is happening out east and it will be 5 there. I may not go in tomorrow, we're supposed to get another round of ice and snow.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

i got a new LARGE branched noid variegated brug cutting from placenterita......
AuntB... you are perfectly fine to call me TL. snow and ice????!!!!??? brrrr. i'm dreading our first real freeze!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I bet Amanda is busy at NASA.. they are trying to launch again. Anyway, we're thinking about you, Amanda. TL, you haven't had a freeze??? Lucky you. I'm home again today because of possibly more snow and ice. My son will be home from K-state next weekend and doesn't go back till mid January... how long is your winter vacation? We live about 50 minutes from Manhattan, and he usually comes home every weekend... he didn't come home last weekend (guitar hero & Wii weekend for his dorm) and he's not coming this weekend. He says he's studying for finals... (?) lol.. I miss him. Probably around Jan. 5th, I'll need to remind myself of that.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Okay, now I really don't know what brug I have. I looked up the meaning of versicolor and it means to change colors. That is what my brug does. It comes on a light yellow and gradually goes to a peachy / pink on the bell part and a creamy off-white on the rest of it. It is inside now and the lighting may be what is causing it to look more pink than peach.

Does anyone have a photo of pink insignis and peach versicolor so I could do some comparison?

Thanks,
Charlene

My Maya cutting is not taking root, I am very disappointed, but not throwing it out yet although it has been a month. It is not dead, but looks rather bad.

(Jan) So Milw, WI(Zone 5b)

Charlene-

Are you trying to root your Maya cutting in water or dirt? When AuntB was talking about her Maya earlier (before she sent out cuttings) she mentioned that Maya doesn't root easily in water. I use "Wet Floral Foam" aka "Oasis" for all my cuttings now and both of my Maya's are rooting and growing foliage quite readily. If you have a hobby/craft shop you can ask if they carry the WFF. Just make sure that you get the right pkg as there is also a dry styrofoam floral foam for arranging silk flowers. I'll try to look up the pictures that I had posted at one time. Otherwise, do as AuntB said she did: just shove the cuttings into soil and don't let it completely dry out. If you have any ?'s just post here...Good luck!!!

Just "ME"...Jan
