It's time for the 2007 DG Photo Contest!

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

What about Black and White photos? Are they allowed?
Deb

Redford, MI(Zone 6a)

Great! I'm already busy finding some to post.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Black and white photos are allowed, but they don't have their own category ;o)

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

My first time to the Phot Contest, but I'm in!

Yippeeeee!!!

Karen

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

Wow! What fabulous shots!

I hope to send something in this year.

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

My first time too, what fun! I just finished posting all of mine :-)

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Dave, is there a time limit, do they have to be shot this year or can they be from years before? I have a couple that I have made in previous years, that I might send. I have never entered them in the contest before.

I am not clear about what is allowed and what isn't. You can crop?
Teresa in KY

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Teresa - I believe that the rule about previous years is just that they can't have previously been submitted to the contest.
Ann

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

I think that is right too, Ann. I just wanted someone to confirm it before I submitted one.
Teresa

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

One year I went back and marked them all as used for the contest. Since I didn't do it last year I guess I have a job to do yet.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Does a caption qualify as enhancement? I've put captions on quite a few of my photos. Should I go back to the original without it (and recrop, etc)?

And if we submit a photo, can we delete that submission if we find a better one before the deadline?

High Desert, NV(Zone 5a)

Quoting:
no digital enhancements allowed, although this is difficult to police and some photos that look extremely enhanced may not be (we've unfortunately learned this in the past). Let's be honorable and agree that the only enhancements will be limited to obvious additions like cropping and text additions where needed.

Dave

Quoting:
Adjusting brightness, etc, is fine. The rule is "no obvious photo enhancement allowed". Updating the white balance, contrast, etc, is perfectly acceptable and normal practice for most photographers.

Adding in an elephant beside the elephant ears would be an obvious photo enhancement and wouldn't be acceptable.

dave

edited to add: Yes, you can delete a picture and add another (as long as you stay within your two picture per category limit) until the last day of the contest.

FSD, Pakistan(Zone 10b)

Hi Dave,
How are you?
I cannot find the Cacti&Succulents category in this amazing Garden Photo Contests.
Please add this category,it is a very big community in Davesgarden.
Please.
Yasir

Hi Yasir,

Let's consider that for next year. In the meantime, I hope that won't stop you from submitting pictures to the Perennials or Landscapes category.

dave

Quick note: I've been sneaking peaks at some of the entries and I am glad to say that the judging responsibility is not assigned to one person! It would be absolutely impossible to choose a winner from such amazing photos.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

We have some very talented people on this website.

(Zone 1)

I've gone through the past contests photo's and I agree ... extremely talented photographer's! To me, all of the photo's look like they are by professional photographer's!

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

I've noticed that too - really amazing photos, even the non-winners.

I entered mine anyway though. I know I won't win, but it's still fun to be a part of it :-)

(Zone 1)

I'm still thinking about entering a couple, but haven't decided for sure yet.

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

And two pictures of mine have been sent in. Winning or not winning, let be measured.
Jianhua

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

This is soooo much fun... can't wait to see more beautiful pictures
Allison

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Terry or Dave, I should know but can't decide if I'm right, are brugmansias considered tropicals, since they are not hardy here in my zone?

Donna

High Desert, NV(Zone 5a)

Pardon me if this has been asked, I couldn't find an answer.

What size should we make the photos that we upload? I have some uploaded and checked them from a friend's computer (who has dial up) and they seemed pretty slow...

Rutholive
Brugmansia would go into the tropical category. That is were most of the brug photos were last year
Tombaak
Posting in the contest is just the same as posting photos in the forums. They will automatically be resized

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

The only thing is that all of the pics I've taken this year have been saved as a smaller size, so I'd have nothing of high resolution. I have only a few that I've keep in large size just cuz of the contests etc.

Unfortunately, there's not all that much garden subject matter left at this time.

I'm keeping my eye out.

Scottsdale, AZ(Zone 9b)

I put my Euphorbia in the Misc catagory since there was no Cacti/Succulant catagory.

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

I'll be stepping in for the first time too in this Photo Contest 2007!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

OKay I'm not the smartest kid on the block, I am just learning about a digital camera what is hi resolution version. I just stick the chip in and the computer does the rest???? I never intered a photo contest before this is fun.
Tilly

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Tilly,

Unless you have the camera set on a real low resolution (unlikely if you are just learning), hi resolution is the picture just as you get it from the camera. For posting on Internet, most pictures are made smaller with some type of software.

Ann

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Tilly, all of my photos are taken on high resolution - After I download them to the computer, I change it with Photoshop Elements, but there are a lot of different types of software - my computer came with a Microsoft version that actually works quite well. High resolution is a much better photo for printing, but for Internet, e-mail, etc., low resolution is just fine. With your software there is usually an option that says "change image size," or something to that effect.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Okay then I guess I'm doing it right I never changed any thing on my camera or the photosmart I use. I dont think I'll win anyway, a lot of the things in the progrem I have no clue as to how to so I leave it alone, someday I will figure it out. but its fun.Glad to see you both here and I know you have some great pics.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Tilly-
You should post your pic of the "real" tilly under the wire basket. I think you posted it in taming the wild garden? It was about two weeks ago, I loved it! Rachel

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

WOW!!! Upon further viewing of last year's winning entries, I have to say that there are some VERY talented photographers here!

I found some pictures FANTASTIC!

Good luck everyone. I think I'll be prepared next year.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I thought of it and changed my mine I look at what I entered and change it
Thanks
Last year had some awesome pics.

But I think I found something better, I have sooomany. wish me luck and luck to all of you.

Claremore, OK

Do water lilies, lotus and other water plants fall under miscellanous?

Some are perennial, some tropical and some stuff just shows up like duckweed and algae.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

It's really up to you, but I'd probably put them under perennials or tropicals depending on which they are.

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

I had the same question about water plants.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

This is my first year on DG, so this is my first year to enter photos.
But I have to say, I find it more of an honor to be able to judge the other photos!
I can't wait to see all the wonderful talent here on DG!

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Technology and talent will be on show! Cameras are coming on with fantastic abilities. Along with it, our skills too must increase and not decrease. Too much dependency on technology must not kill the skill of the photographer.
