It's time for the 2007 DG Photo Contest!

It's that time again!

The 7th annual DG Photo Contest is now open for contestants to upload their favorite photos they've taken. You can see the past contests here:

http://davesgarden.com/contest/

and the link for the 2007 contest is here:

http://davesgarden.com/contest/2007/

Each member is allowed to upload a maximum of two photos into each category. On November 1st, the entries will be closed and voting will begin (voting is handled by the membership at large, and how to do that will be explained when voting begins).

The winners will be announced on or around November 15th.

This year we're also going to make a DG calendar using the top winners of each category. If you are one of the happy winners, please note that I'll be asking you for a hi-resolution version of your winning photo so that we can use it in the calendar. The calendar should be available for purchase on December 1st.

I love the DG photo contests. We always end up with an absolutely amazing variety of beautiful shots. Have fun!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

Hooray! Thanks dave :)

(Zone 1)

Wow! I've just viewed a couple of past years winners ... Awesome photo's!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5a)

I just looked through last years winners--spectacular! I'm not much of a photographer myself, but I'll be first in line for the calendar!

Thanks for organizing this all!

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

I clicked on the second link and saw that each category has at least one entry, but I can't figure out how to view them? When I click on a category my only options are to add an entry or view my entries. How do I view what others have submitted so far?

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

You won't be able to see any entries, other than your own, until the contest is open for judging

Horsens, Denmark

Amazing photos!!!!
I don´t think I have such nice ones, but I put some in anyway :o)))
Does it have to be photos taken this year?

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

I think the criteria used to state you couldn't use entries that had been submitted to former DG contests.

Horsens, Denmark

Okay thanks.
I´ve never submitted photos before, somehow I´ve always missed it :o((

High Desert, NV(Zone 5a)

Dave,

Is there a bouquet category?
Our own flowers and designs of course...

Melissa

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Does anyone remember if there were any rules regarding digital enhancements? For example is it ok to submit a photo that was finished in black and white instead of color? I know we aren't supposed to manipulate images, like putting in things that weren't really there, but what about just changing from color to sepia or BW and so forth?
Deb

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Also seems to me that there were some limitations on the size of the image. Could someone comment on that too, please?

Thanks,
Ann

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Do the winners get anything? I would love it if DG could arrange with a digital camera company to offer new digital cameras to the first place winners ;-) Can you tell I'm in dire need!!! All kidding aside, companies donate alot towards publicity and marketing ~I bet they would do it in exchange for the exposure of their name and product(s).

Also; will the copyright claim appear in the printed calendar on each photo as it does online? and are there photo requirements posted somewhere? I haven't seen anything posted.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Here's the problem I have, and maybe others feel the same. If I could see what had been submitted, I'd get a better idea of what "type" of pictures I might submit. Or, whether I am just setting myself up for egg on my face for even attempting. Of course, that might be the idea behind not letting them be seen...more selections because others are not intimidated by what has already been submitted. Okay, I guess I've talked myself into seeing both sides, but I still wish I could see em.

Necedah, WI(Zone 4b)

Aw, just submit them. :D What's the worst that could happen? and yup, I've put my pride where my mouth is, and mine are no show pics either. I think my camera strap is even hanging out in one of them? Oh well, they're the best I can do.

edited for punctuation, or lack of..

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Islandshari - you could look through all of last years contest to get an idea.

Cochise, AZ(Zone 8b)

Here is where to find the contest results. http://davesgarden.com/contest/

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

What category would you put vines in. They could be annual, periennial, tropical....
I think they should have their own category.

Marlton, NJ

I'd also like to know the rules as far editing & enhancing things.

I would hope it would be just "cropping" to keep to keep it simple and not let other things in because each persons definition of sharpening etc. can really run things amuk. :-)

JMHO :-)

Yes, no digital enhancements allowed, although this is difficult to police and some photos that look extremely enhanced may not be (we've unfortunately learned this in the past). Let's be honorable and agree that the only enhancements will be limited to obvious additions like cropping and text additions where needed.

Dave

(Zone 1)

LOL. I have no clue how to "enhance" photo's ... I just recently learned how to crop them.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Budgie--I'd put your vines in whichever category they fit best--if they're annual vines they go in annuals, if they're tropical they go in tropicals, etc. The categories are already set so you just have to put them in the one that is the closest.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

What is annual for one place may be perienniel here.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

An annual completes its lifecycle once, and dies. Tender perennials should probably go in "Tropicals".

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

So it's best to put passi's & such in Tropicals?

Yep

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

OK
Just don't want to get disqualified for wrong categories. LOL

There's no disqualification for the wrong category. :)

So. Puget Sound, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh dear, I often have to adjust the brightness of my photos. Not sure which ones I did. I hope that's allowed because chances are a couple I've already submitted were adjusted.

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

Me too - I often do some very minor brightness or contrast adjustments on my photos - but I have no idea which ones I've adjusted and which I haven't because if I'm happy with it, I replace the original.

Adjusting brightness, etc, is fine. The rule is "no obvious photo enhancement allowed". Updating the white balance, contrast, etc, is perfectly acceptable and normal practice for most photographers.

Adding in an elephant beside the elephant ears would be an obvious photo enhancement and wouldn't be acceptable.

dave

So. Puget Sound, WA(Zone 8b)

Whew!

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

Have to say it..................no dog beside my blooming dogwood trees or cats under the pussy willow? LOL

(Zone 1)

LOL. Too cute! Maybe someone will post a couple of those enhansed pic's on a thread sometime .... Love it!

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

Are tree frogs domestic pets, if they're kept inside in a vivarium? Or is this category only cats & dogs?

Sorry if this is a dumb question :-(

(Zone 1)

Sounds like they would be considered pets to me .... not pets I would want, but I know a lot of folks keep them!

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I'd say a pet is a pet, I'm sure some other people have pets other than dogs & cats too.

(Zone 1)

Amaranth00: Just give your little froggies names and call them pets!

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

Oh they've definitely got names, and little froggy personalities too :-)

(Zone 1)

Then .... they ARE pets!
