Today's Weather in Your Garden 3

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

No pirl, it's home run - touchdown is in football. Of course I read the posts backwards, from bottom to top and I wonder why I never know what anyone is talking about!! LOL Eleanor
Oh, this is the weather post - it rained hard last night. Forgot what I was going to post about. As for now I don't know cause it is still dark outside, but the report said more rain.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Oh, thanks. Well I hope his team got all the goals they needed to ace the game.

We had some seriously heavy rains last night. I'm curious to see just how much we've had over the last few days.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

We have some serious rain, too! My basement has about a quarter inch of water in it. That's pretty normal after a good, hard rain.

It's still drizzling right now with a temp of about 52 degrees.
Humidity is at 97% again ...
Forecast is for showers all day long and a high of just 54 degrees.

There's no wind now, but wow!! Did they ever blow hard last night!! Thunder and lightning, too!! I can't wait for the sun to come up so I can see how all my garden children fared.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Sun is breaking out on a now and then basis. Dahlias are all still standing and most shocking - the birdbath isn't even full.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow is it chilly! Just in from the bus stop. 53 and very windy. Only had a windbreaker on and I was freezing. Look like an additional 1/2 inch or so for a total of 2 inches the past few days. I'll take it.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Emily, I will be under-planting my large JM (probably Bloodgood - planted by previous owners) with the following six: Corallinum, Aratama, Shidava Gold, Green Mist, Octopus and Skeeters Broom.

Also bought Acer griseum (Paperbark Maple), Beni kawa and Acer aconitifolium 'Maiku Jaku' for other areas.

I'll probably start a JM thread next week when I start the planting.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Well, I asked for it and got it. Love the chilly weather, not crazy 'bout the wind, though. Only about 58. Clouds are clearing out.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Freezing to death (not literally) up here. Glad rained. Glad I closed my sunroof.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

wet! but no more rain!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Still low 50s, breezy, some sun, some clouds some short rain showers. Another half inch of rain overnight, total for week is one and a half inches of lovely rain, happy to get it. Should be dry for the game but very chilly with a gusty breeze. Go Sox!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Temp 62.0°F, Windchill 41.1°F, rh 47%, Wind from the NW @ 14.1 mph, Barometer 29.47↑.

Got buckets of rain & lightning, last night with little wind,... got the wind today. Brought all the plants sensitive to cold indoors, (summer vacation is over). Bonsai Red Maple beginning to turn with a hint of rust now, but the 'big boys' are still green. Still have to put the glass on the screen doors - gonna wait a bit yet. Furnace kicked in for one cycle, (haven't heard that for awhile... just a friendly reminder it's going to be using more gas soon). Good time to break out the sweaters!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Rain started last night around 10 and has been raining ever since! Coming down hard at times but the temps were 55 last night and most of today. It is now 52 and holding.....along with the rain!

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

A little nip in the air this morning and overcast. The sun came out, and it got quite breezy. So breezy that two electric cables snapped outside the job and left burn marks on some of our cars. Thank goodness no one was out there at the time!

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

It's "breezy" on Cape Cod (means only gusts up to 30 mph.) Temps in the 40s at night for the next few days--daytimes, mid-60s. I'm making hay while the sun shines.
Victor, I'm repotting three small container-grown Sasagiayama, Beni Maku, and Beni Komachi, who are knocking at the sides of their pots. Planning on taking them inside this winter--they made it through last winter outside, but I think it was hard on them. My "red dancing girl" suffered particularly. I'm hoping that keeping them under lights will be OK.
Sorry, "Today's Weather" folks, for the digression.

Assonet, MA(Zone 6b)

My lawn was making hay while the sun shone all summer, but glory be the rains have come. Isn't it great. My computer has been down for a couple of weeks so I'm just catching up. It was fun reading the excitement the rain brought. Planted in the rain yesterday, felt soo goood. It is 43 and crisp. Think I'll light a fire. Bright sunshine predicted. :)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

49 here and the hot coffee tastes extra special. We're due for the mid 60's and sunshine for quite a few days.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Same here Pirl. I suddenly wish I was a coffee drinker.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

How about some steaming hot tea?

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

39 - I didn't want to get out from under the covers

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I was thrilled when the heat came on! To think that we had the AC on just last week!

32 at 5:30 am - We had a frost.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Oh no! Oh no! Oh no!!!!!
It's just 30 degrees here this AM. There was no mention of it being so cold in any of the forecasts that I can recall from yesterday evening!!!!! Can you tell I'm a bit upset??

Winds out of the South, and the humidity is at 88%.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Just the thought of frost is more frightening than any Halloween mask.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Good morning all!! Cold here today and the heat came on. We didn't get a frost but it was in the high 30"s. Eleanor

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Yes. I, too, made the heat come on. We heat with wood at this time of year ... oil and wood when it gets much colder. So, I went to the basement in my jammies and started the very old wood furnace. I love the smell of a wood fire, but gee! It's an awful lot of work sometimes.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Good Morning all! I can't believe I slept this late!!!!!!! 40 degrees here. I'm heading out with my coffee. It's supposed to go up to the 60's with sun. A good day for yard work.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Just missed a frost here, 33 degrees when I got up. Up to 34 now with nice sunshine. Looks like a good day for starting the putting things away for winter bit. Downside the heat came on. :(

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

43 here and very sunny, nice after 2 days of dreary weather. Good day for fall chores!

Van Etten, NY(Zone 5a)

It got to 32 but it looks like we avoided a frost. Figures, I picked all the tomatoes, peppers, and most of the basil yesterday.

Mid-Cape, MA(Zone 7a)

45 degrees earlier this morning here; now it's 50 and very sunny. Time to get outside!
I am REALLY impressed at the number of NE forum-folks who are up and at'um so early on a Saturday morning!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Temp 61°, Wind from the West 9.0mph, Windchill 59.1°, rh 45%, Barometer 29.79↑

Sunny and a little nippy now, nice early fall day, Gotta head into the 'Big Apple', I have some things to take care of, it'll be warmer there because of all the concrete. Yard work will have to wait till tomorrow, I won't be back until late...

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Frost!!!! Oh no! The outdoor houseplants are still outside! The cuttings I took are still outside! The sweet potato vine - can I really dig tubers? Will it be as bad as dahlias? An enormous pile of brush to turn into firewood - if possible. It might be mostly dead Christmas trees. It's DD #1, with a broken arm - she's no use. DD#2 feels put upon if we ask her to do anything. DH is busy busy busy! Alas, alack!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

OMG the amaryllis! I trimmed the foliage back a few days ago but need to dig up and store the bulbs, which seemed like a really good investment in Fall 2006!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

According to the forecast, they're holding off the frost so the Sox can continue their triumphant march to victory!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

The lightning zapped our phone again........2nd time this summer! Bummer! When I got up this morning, it was 32 degrees on the outside thermometer, but no sign of frost nipping anything. My tubers are all dug now and the 2 amaryllis that are going to escort me to Fla. - along with my orchid, one sentimental Thanksgiving cactus and a couple more things if I can fit them in - are coming in to be spared the cold temps tonight. The bird bath got put away and it is now 50 degrees and chilly at 5:05 p.m..

We finished making our wild Concord grape jelly today......the process got interrupted when we ran out of jars mid-ladling. My DH to the rescue........he got some more jars while I kept the canner boiling the whole time he was gone....oh my!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Explain the difference between frost and 32 degrees? Victor, I know

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

It was cool last night - and probably tonight as well. I drag the brugmansias into the garage, and then bring them into the sunshine during the day. The silly things are still blooming!

Next week, the evening temperatures are supposed to be above 40 degrees, so they can stay outside then.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Carrie - I don't have a clue how it could be 32 on the thermometer, but no frost. We stopped on the road to chat with our neighbor, and he said he had frost on the pumpkin last night. Even my impatiens sitting out in the middle of the unprotected yard was not nipped. I'm taking no chances tonight......everything came inside that I can save to go south. I just hate having to leave the tender plants out.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Dry air.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Really, Arlene! That's interesting - and it makes sense, of course!
