What's blooming? #16

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Most people skip over #13....but not me! I skip unlucky #15!!
So what's blooming for you? Weeds are in full bloom here and a few flowers!

lol, asters, right? Or are they really weeds? As I keep trying to explain, a 'weed' is something you don't care for in your garden, ie Victor and his morning glories. A 'flower' is a 'desirable' plant, e.g. something you desire. And one man's weeds are another man's flowers, etc. Here is a 'weed' from my father's house in Santa Fe, NM. It's a weed because he didn't plant it.

NIce dahlia's DP!!! I really like 'Who Dun it"

Yes Carrie, aster's.....but I like your weed too!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Gorgeous, DP. I'm formally renouncing Dahlias - come and get 'em. I have a bunch I got from Poochella; I'm an unfit mother, and shouldn't be trusted with scissors, let alone dahlias!

carrielamont . . .what did you do to the poor things? Mine have been pretty much care free. Have to admit a long shot of the dahlia patch doesn't look so great. I...ahem...did not do a proper job of staking (and I'm the guy who has two 30 foot rows of bamboo tomato cages 10 feet tall...if I could do that, you think I could have put 5 foot stakes in the ground and tied 9 dahlias to them....but noooooo.....)

Like the sedum, Victor. See it planted around here in front of offices. The colors, however, are muddy reds. Yours pop out.

Great stuff!!

DavidPaul - simple. No food, no water, no sun. DH was GOING to prune that rapidly growing shady maple, yeah, any day now..... But in general, while the portraits of the individual flowers are gorgeous, the plant is UNattractive for most of its above ground life. I did try them, with an experimental planting them in pots and then bringing the pots in program.

I'm more interested in the garden as a whole organic creature, where individual plants don't require special treatment. I'm more interested in the garden as a whole organic creature pretty good-sounding line, hmm? I just made it up.... wonder if it's true.

"I'm more interested in the garden as a whole organic creature" - an excuse for untidyness.

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

We are definitely on the downhill side, but here is one area where there is still some color. Perennial Bachelor Button, Obedient Plant (both spreading so I'll have to dig some up soon), Zinnia and Gaura (which has been blooming all summer). Unfortunately you also see the lawn which is in the process of being reseeded after mole, insect and drought damage.

Gorgeous early fall day here today....leaves are falling gently in the breeze from all the maples that are in their yellow phase; not much to photograph, but my Autumn Joy looks pretty today:

and these colorful berries stood out in the edge of the woods....anyone know what they are? My DH thinks maybe Jack in the Pulpit, but I haven't looked them up. Lots of poisonous red berries around now....

Looks like Pokeweed to me.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Think so, Victor? They have a bright red stem and pure white berries......they are very colorful in their own way, mostly because of the red stems. He put some in a table arrangement and they made an interesting addition to the flowers. I can't say I've noticed them here in the past. We have lots of the red berries, but I don't know these by name. You may be right; I looked up the Jack-in-the-pulpit, and even though they are growing nearby, I don't think they have berries like this. Love the mysteries in Nature!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Watch if the berries darken. The arrangement and red stem is characteristic of Pokeweed.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Nice flowers, berries and weeds everyone. I have the usual suspects here and some hold overs from the summer still. Here are a few.

Have fun Celeste!!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

wonderful pictures everyone!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Have a ball, Celeste! You sure have earned it from what you did for all of us you sent such nice plants to!! I've been out pulling grass and weeds from the area in front of my garden sink where I plan to plant the daylilies you sent me tomorrow! I will have a perfect view of them from my cuppatea porch!

Ngam - loved your pretty pics! I especially like the slice of your rose garden.

Do any of you in zone 5 have to mulch your roses over winter? If so, what do you use to mulch them?

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I like the jade pic Victor.

Purple Dome looks good ngam.

I don't have any clematis, but thought you might like to see this pic of one I took.
