Is there a problem?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

It might be good for someone who's having picture posting problems to start a separate thread on that. I think it's a separate issue from the issues that most people on this thread are having, so it'll probably get resolved faster if it has its own thread rather than trying to talk about two problems at once in here. Maybe it's related to this problem but more than likely it's something different.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just saw this thread for the first time...................but I have had the same problem......and so have several of the people i dmail a lot...................I just assumed it was me...............glad to know that others are having the same problem.............This problem only started for me about a week ago...............never before...........and I know I am virus free...........the computer tech has this machine so tight ............nothing could get in..........

Hi all,

I just wanted to share that some of my Dmails have completely disappeared when I click on Preview, and the most recent one was last Friday night. It is frustrating but there is something happening even more frustrating.

Two of my DMails were not only sent to the two people I had intended to read them but also to a third member. Two paragraphs were all mixed up and sent to a third member. She replied and was very confused and even said her feelings were hurt. This third member had said she was sending me seeds of Rudbeckia Black Beauty. I looked it up in plant files and thought it was ugly. I then made this same comment to another member whom I Dmail regularly . The third member read my comments in the paragraphs that were sent to her on Sept 12. I never even sent a Dmail to the third member on Sept 12. I have contacted Terry and she said regular emails get mixed up too like this.---never have I heard of anything like this happening. Anyway I sent two Dmails apologizing to the third member for my comments, saying I used to hate all white flowers but this year I am loving them, because my David Phlox did so well. I said that someday I may even love Rudbeckia Black Beauty. She accepted my apology and said I should continue to share with other members when I do not like a plant.

For the future, I suggest that none of you share negative comments about someone or their plants, as it could get back to them --like it did in my case. I am a very sensitive and kind hearted person and wish I had never made the comment . For the future I will not share anything on Dmails but my address for the purpose of receiving or sending seeds.

Betty

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

That almost sounds like someone is interfering to stop any negative talk............wow........that is a tough thing to happen..............afterall, we are human beings with all our flaws...............I have said to a good friend many times that I didn't get excited about something someone sent me........................i would 'die' if dmails are purposely getting mixed up...............it happened the other day with jannich and me.........we thought we were talking on dmail..........and some of it appeared on a thread......instead of to one another........fortunately it wasn't anything that mattered................but that is really scary................I am so sorry, Betty...................

So Dmails aren't private after all. Good to know.

Louisville, KY(Zone 6b)

gessiegail,

I received several emails from Terry, telling me that no one at DG ever reads any Dmails. So if that is truth---then maybe DG has a virus and someone is trying to do harm there. It has been a horrible experience for me to go through and I was up most of the night--concerned about the third member being hurt. Well she replied with a nice Dmail that made me feel so much better. I am thinking now and wonder--what are the chances of two of my Dmails getting so mixed up and later sent to the third party that was mentioned in one of the DMails I sent?

Well you go through that once and you never do that again. I will only use Dmails for address exchange. Terry told me I could delete that mixed up Dmail by going to the top and clicking on Delete but as I can see it --that would delete all my to and from dmails from that 3rd member and I do not want to delete all of them, as she has shared with me many nice Dmails as I with her. I have asked Terry to delete that whole messed up Dmail dated Sept 12 and she has told me to do it myself. I just cannot understand how that is possible without deleting all of her replies.

Betty

Marlton, NJ

Betty, can you highlight it then right click and chose Delete from the menu that comes up?

I've never tried that myself. Pelle

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

The main reason I don't like to delete dmails is: In trading many of us dmail about what we want and what we have to trade..............this may go on for days.........I like to be able to go back to these and know exactly what i am sending to someone.............

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Even if you delete a dmail, you can still view it. It won't be in your inbox anymore, but it will be in a folder called "delete."

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

This may be a stupid question, but for the people who are having problems with dmails going to people you didn't think you sent it to--is it possible that you accidentally sent the message to a group rather than an individual? I know this is something that's really easy to do in regular email, so my thought is it might be easy in dmail as well. Or if you were sending a group message, is it possible that there is a person in that group that you forgot was there? I figure when Dave first put the group thing in place people probably played around a bit with adding people, so maybe there's someone there that you forgot about.

Louisville, KY(Zone 6b)

Hi mgh,

Thanks for explaining that to me. Then I need to email Terry again and ask her to please remove that mixed up Dmail permanently off of DG. I do not want it to be anywhere. It was their mistake and I feel they should take care of deleting it permanently. I am still shaking inside over the whole experience. And I feel I had to step in and share what happened to me , for others to be cautious about sharing personal comments in Dmails.

Pelle, I tried to delete it that way but when I right click , I do not have the option to delete.

Betty

(Cathy), MO

Thanks for sharing this Betty. It will sure make me more cautious.

Louisville, KY(Zone 6b)

ecrane,

That is not what is happening in my case at all. And at the beginning of the Dmail I read that was all mixed up--it was addressed to the third member and yet the rest was paragraphs to two other members and none of the content was anything I had typed to the third member except the name at the top.

Betty

Louisville, KY(Zone 6b)

Hi all,

I would like to comment again. I just now reread the whole Fake Dmail that was sent to the third party member. Her name was at the top but none of the paragraphs were any that I had sent to her --not one word. All the words were typed in two Dmails sent to two separate members, one being in Ala and one being in Georgia. I have just re-read the Dmails I sent to one member and certain words and sentences appear to have been lifted out of that dmail to the one member and inserted in the fake DMail to the third member, as the words I typed to the first member are no longer in that Dmail. This is something going on wrong within DG or a virus on DG website. I will once again email Terry and ask her to delete the whole fake Dmail sent to the third member on Sept 12, which I never wrote or sent to her on that date and in fact had not sent her any Dmails in several days.

Betty.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

We do not read members' dmails. (There are thousands of dmails a day zipping from member to member. We are a small admin team with more interesting and important tasks than reading your messages ;o)

No one else can read your dmails unless you gave them your password to log in as you.

It is impossible for anyone to "forge" a dmail and make it appear to come from you. (It would be far easier to spoof an email address outside of Dg, if someone were intent on malicious mischief of that sort.)

Bottom line: there are no fake dmails floating around. There aren't any dmails that were misrouted - either accidentally or deliberately by admins - it is simply not possible.

Without a lot of details to go on, I can conclude that one of two things happened to Betty's dmail:

1) She accidentally sent something to another member that she didn't mean to. (It is VERY embarrassing to suddenly discover that what you meant to say ABOUT someone was accidentally sent TO them ;o)

2) She created a group of friends, and thought she was sending a dmail to just one person in the group, not the whole group. Again, that's a big embarrassing oopsie....but that's all it is.

Her dmail mixup (and photos being too large) have NOTHING (zero, nada, zip, nothing) to do with the shift key issue that some people are reporting here.

There are maybe a half-dozen reports of the shift-key problem. Whatever that issue is, it most likely is a glitch - maybe in your browser settings - that is causing a miscommunication between your browser and DG.

We have 320,000-some members and thousands of subscribers. This problem is not widespread: it has been reported by a handful of members, and we can't replicate it. That means it is an isolated problem, and it may take some time to figure out exactly what combination of browser settings is causing it. Dave is looking into it, but this is the weekend, and he may be taking some time off to spend with his family ;o)

We have no viruses - we never have. Dave has always taken the site's security and privacy very seriously.

Recently had a problem with the scroll button on the mouse, every time I tried to scroll up it would "jump" to the bottom of the page. I was going to replace the mouse but first reinserted (tightly) the plug for the current one. It was a faulty connection and tightening the connector solved the problem.

Another time, at a customers site whenever she tried to enter her password and hit the first key or any other key the screen would display many instances of the key pressed as if it had been held down for a long time. I lifted the keyboard and tilted it forward to be rewarded with a lap full of the milk that her children had spilled into it. I installed a new keyboard for her with a label which read "this equipment is lactose intolerant".

What will often seem a Virus or software problem is often just a simple hardware issue.

Now............i would be the lady who did something like the milk being spilled and not realizing it.........I am sure Terry is right...............we make mistakes we are not aware of ................I do I know!!!!!!!!!!!!

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok, here's a maybe lame idea on what could be causing some of the wipe-outs of the text boxes while typing. I'm guessing it's the same as the shortcut keys that Terry linked to, but I don't know how many folks actually went to that link....

We recently got a new keyboard and it has the shortcut keys marked on it. I thought I knew them all, but lo and behold, there are nasties hanging out there that can really mess you up. If you accidentally hit control + a it will select everything you just typed. Then if you type any key it will all disappear. Try it and see if that is a mistake you think you could have made. I know that I've done it. Different keyboards have their control button in a different place, some are right below the shift key...it's not a hard mistake to make.

Louisville, KY(Zone 6b)

Hi all,

Neither of those two reasons apply to what happened to me.

I did not accidentally send a dmail to the wrong person. If you read what I have explained , the other two did receive the dmails I sent but several paragraphs were taken out of both dmails to create a new dmail sent to the third member. One line in one Dmail was read by one member and she recalls that I said this and it is no longer posted in that dmail and has now been removed and has been lifted and posted on the dmail that was posted on Sept 12 to the third member. I repeat--I did not send a dmail to the third member on Sept 12 and nothing in that dmail was typed by me to be sent to the third member. As I stated it was two dmails that were sent to two different members on separate dates. A third dmail was created out of different paragraphs sent to two other members to create a new dmail to the third party that was not sent by me to the third party on Sept 12.

The second reason is not feasible either as I have never created a group of friends to send Dmails to.

I am thinking this may be a software problem with DG.

Betty

....or someone broke into your account on DG Betty. That's too bizarre.

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

We had something odd like this going on at another site but it was narrowed down to AOL users. There have been issues in the past about naming the website so I have replaced it with "website name"
I don't know if this is helpful or not as I don't know much about computer talk, but maybe it will give you a place to start looking???

"When you visit the site, your ISP number is logged.
Most ISP servers have a few ISP# that are sequential.... 1232004, 1232005, 1232006 that sort of thing so the security setting can be flexible enough to accept one digit ID difference in your ISP# but AOL has numerous and multiple ISP #s that change more than one digit so the security 'fix' phpBB has added is unable to recognize that.
The long and short of it is..... as long as a member is using AOL as their provider, they are running the risk of this continuing to happen.
I would recommend that when it does, you close your session in "Website name", pull up your browser again and see if you can type your response again. There may be an issue of how long since you entered the site before you type your response too so reopening into "Website name", and posting within 5-10 minutes of entering may also help.

We will keep and eye on this issue to see if the Phpbb board does make a fix to this problem

This security feature phpBB installed to prevent your ISP # from being hijacked and is a necessary feature."

Here is something I have thought of that I do quite often..............For whatever reason Dave's site page doesn't completely cover whatever is open behind it..........so...........sometimes mine get deleted because I am hitting the scroll arrow on the screen open behind Dave's site................(more than one site open at the same time)

(Cathy), MO

I hate to be a pain, but....I normally only have 1 window open when I'm in Daves, and I don't have AOL. I also tried closing completely out, even restarting my computer a couple of times and that didn't help. But like I said, the problem with disappearing text only happend to me that one day. I haven't had the problem since.

I did finally get my picture to upload after trying probably 8-10 times last night and this morning. Didn't do anything different, it just finally took it! Go figure!

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Are you on "dial up"?

Bureau County, IL(Zone 5a)

I didn't hit any keys accidentally. I don't use AOL, never have. About the only reason I visit this particular forum is when I'm having problems. I don't come here often and I think that I'm in the majority. This has already been deemed either a virus in all of our computers, or we all accidentally hit the wrong keys. I don't have a virus and I didn't hit a key accidentally, so I give up.

Betty, my mom drove into me if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all. I've gotten too far away from that growing up. Thank you for the reminder that words can and actually do hurt people. I am really sorry that happened to the other woman and you.

A funny aside was that several years ago I told my sister (who was working at the same place I was) that I'd asked for a raise- and exactly how much of one. She then wrote her husband a quick and sarcastic email about the amount I was asking for and accidentally sent it to me...much to her mortification. Laugh....It's alot easier to laugh something like that off when you love the person tho :) Not suggesting that you sent the note yourself either. Just sharing a similar personal experience that stung quite a bit at the time. My mom was right :) and it's good to have the reminder as I get older myself

No, I have DSL

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

cat, I would really start a new thread about the picture problems if I were you, there are too many different problems getting talked about on this thread and I think you'll probably get the picture thing resolved quicker if it gets its own thread.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am so sorry Betty that the judge and jury showed up to remind you of something already painful!!!!!!!!!!

(Cathy), MO

If it happens again, I will do that. Hopefully it was a fluke!

Ottawa, KS(Zone 5b)

Betty,

I read your recent Dmail about this issue, and came here to this message thread to see what is going on. I don't know what the answer is, but if a keystroke logger has somehow gotten on to your system, somebody out there in Cyberspace could have access to everything you have typed on your keyboard, including credit card numbers and passwords. The "inconvenient truth" is that many well-respected anti-spyware and anti-virus programs do not detect or remove key-loggers. If you don't already have software that can scan for, detect, and remove key-loggers, you might want to get some and scan your system for that type of malware.

Of course, there could be some other explanation for your problem.

Hopefully Dave's Garden has safeguards against a person registering under two or more different user names. It would be a "hoot" if the two people you Dmailed turned out to be the same person. I realize that the chances of that being the case are very remote. But, I have to say, the problem you have experienced does seem rather improbable.

MM

Louisville, KY(Zone 6b)

Hi to all,

Thanks for all of your comments and concern. I take no offense in anything that has been said. I just want this worked out. I do have AOL and was told in the beginning that DG cannot receive any emails from AOL. So I send them emails through my Insight Broadband email address and all are being received and replied to . I do have security on the AOlL account, one that is included which is McAfee and others that I have installed and run a scan on weekly.

It has been a bad experience to go through but the good part is that the one that read the Dmail that was all mixed up and not composed by me to her--she is fine with all of it and she has a soft heart and understands. That comforts me greatly at this time.

I have been in bed most of the day with a stomach virus and I am going back to bed. Once again, thanks to everyone for your help and concerns.

To the person with the problem of loading photos.....this is not a solution to your problem, but it is somewhat helpful. You said you typed your message then clicked Browse to load your photo. And then Preview? And nothing happened? Am I right?

I learned this the hard way. Type one word or one sentence, then click the Browse. After you find your photo, and click Preview, either it works or it doesn't. If it DOES work, you can then add the rest of your message before clicking on Send. If it does NOT work, you are at the same place as before, but at least you didn't waste a lot of time typing your message. Still frustrating, but with less time wasted.

(Cathy), MO

Thanks nap, I'll try that next time.

I've been working on our new Pets website almost exclusively for the last week, so I've been mostly out of the loop here.

Betty clearly made a mistake. As she said above, she wrote something unflattering about someone, and instead of writing that statement to a third person as she intended, she actually sent it to the person about whom she was talking.

I've reviewed the system and I see no error or fault here. I think the most likely scenario is that she replied to the wrong dmail (as the logs clearly state). I think when we do something unfortunate and embarrassing, it's natural to be tempted to lash out and blame others. In this case, however, I do not believe that we are to blame and, despite claims to the contrary, there is no conspiracy here.

Unfortunately, I was not able to get Betty to understand this, and this morning I honored her wish by removing her from the site.

There seem to be people out there who are confident that Terry and myself are evil people, just waiting for an opportunity to bring harm to folks. For them, there's nothing I can do to help them and I do my best to avoid them as best as I can. When they angrily threaten to leave DG, I just take the opportunity to show them the door.

EVIL, Thats explains everything! I knew you and Terry had a problem,Because everytime I have needed help,Or a post corrected,You took care of it,No questions aked with almost immediate response, Geez! Evil who knew?

Sorry, Dave and Terry, I know this wasn't/isn't a laughing matter, but truth be told I would not want your jobs for all the tea in China,Sometimes people need a scapegoat and the 2 of you are the only ones to skin, Have a great day and in-case I forget to say it the next time I goof and need you,Thank you!

BettyFB's issues are clearly different than that which I have been experiencing.

Hey dave, I'm still having the same problems. Have you any suggestions?

In IE7, I have gone to-
Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Reset Internet Explorer Settings
I hit reset and am still having issues.

I went to Mozilla and reset all the Internet Settings also.

I switched from OutPost Pro to ZoneAlarm Pro and I switched from Nod32 back to AVG Pro and I can see photos again. I still have Black Ice on the other side of the router plus whatever my ISP provides. I sort of figured I had configured something incorrectly using applications that were new to me what with not being able to see photos here and all. Never could figure out whether it was the new firewall application or the new antivirus application that was doing me in so I removed them both. Sigh, there goes about $80.

I went back to Trend Micro's site and ran another online scan. They say I am clean. Have you any suggestions of any other sites I can go to for online scans? I realize they all update their definitions a little bit differently. I'm suspecting a virus of some sort messing with us but simply can't figure out how I got hit with no e-mail??? All I've got is D-Mail and I've never had a problem with that.

Albuquerque, NM(Zone 7a)

Dave -- I'm very glad to see the end of this and think you took appropriate action.

Thanks for all the problem solving you do.
