If it helps in troubleshooting, I have never observed any problems like this--I'm running IE6 on Windows XP here at home, and IE version 6 (I think) with whatever the version of Windows before XP was at work (they're a little behind the times on upgrading the operating system!)
I know a while ago lots of people were having all sorts of problems with IE7 not getting along with DG--I wonder if this is just that same old compatibility issue rearing its ugly head again?
Is there a problem?
And for those us using Mozilla firefox? It only happens at this site, no where else.
I run Mozilla and have never had any problems with the text boxes here (or elsewhere.)
I noticed Mozilla did recently change something in the way it treats a page view: if I try to use my back arrow to visit a page I just submitted (or edited), and wish to edit it, I have to refresh the view to get the "submit" function to work.
That's not just at DG, it's across the board with numerous other sites and even Google (run a search, then hit "back", edit your search box, and press "search" - it won't work until you refresh the view.)
Sounds like it's happening on both Firefox and Internet Explorer.
I'm on Mozilla right now and you're right, I do have to refresh the view. I think what we're talking about experiencing is different though. We're losing whole posts. Poof, gone! Touch the shift or the Ctrl key and you risk loosing everything you typed. It really is like it's bouncing you out. Very frustrating.
Well, this certainly is an odd thing.
The area you type in is actually completely a function of your browser and has nothing to do with the DG code. All I do is send a snippet of text to your browser, instructing it to create a typing area for you. Then when you click on Preview or Send, your browser sends what you typed back to the server for processing.
So what happens while you're typing is completely in the control of the browser.
I will look more closely at this. This is happening in D-Mail as well as the forums? Or just dmail?
Please test it here:

does it happen there also?
I don't know about anybody else Dave, but I tend to be somewhat long winded.....I know I know....nobody's believing that statement. But it's true. I can talk and talk some more. Marathon 5 hour phone calls, the whole nine yards. The post I was writing was long winded. I had the bar on the side, to scroll back up to what I wrote even before it started acting up. The box you give for a link, is way too big, I can't possibly think of what all to right in there when it's not going anywhere, if that makes sense. So I hit the period key and that made it just go to the side, making the bar on the bottom. Not good. So I hit enter, to give me more lines. And more lines I kept on typing. Of course it didn't do it. So I don't know! I only know it did it. And again, I'm on Mozilla, Windows XP home version, have the java script add on thing below, run the various spyware and antivirus daily, and my machine comes up clean. I'm sure none of this helps you ;(
Oh, and my posts are disappearing as some are saying. Like I said, I had a really long winded, but very informative ;) post going and was into about my 5th paragraph or so. All of sudden when I hit the space key, the screen bounced up to what I had already wrote, my cursor was still down below, but as I typed blindly, I was seeing the cursor flash across the words I'd already written up above. I don't explain very well, and I'm sorry. When I opened up another tab and went to another websites forum, I added in another long winded post and had no troubles. I came back to finish up my post and at first I wasn't having the problem. Then it started doing it again. I left again, and went to the other websites forum. Posted over there again, with no problems. Came back here and it was still doing it, so I finished up what I was trying to say, but got frustrated because of the bouncing up of the page, so I ended my post and just hit send. Then I came here and posted my inquiry above.
Does that help?
Hi Dave, I haven't had it happen since a few days ago, but it didn't happen in an email. I was going to post a new thread on the Camera & Photography forum, but when it disappeared I just googled to find out what I needed to know. I couldn't be bothered to type it out again!
I have used your special box but copied it to here (no send button), but as I haven't had a problem for a few days it might not be of use to you except for telling you where it happened!
I have accidentally hit buttons or gone to look at something else and lost what was there, so I type my message on Microsoft Word, and then copy/paste it in the reply box. I like to run spell check anyway, so it serves a double purpose.
With Mozilla, you don't have to run spell check, as it has one built right into it. I didn't hit anything accidentally. Only thing I was thinking was that Dave has a word limit....then it's would make sense ;D
The next time you encounter this problem, I'd encourage you to look at the browser "forward" and/or "back" buttons - if one or both are green, try clicking forward (or back) to see if it restores your text.
Has anyone tried the special box I linked to?
I did. Typed in it, but couldn't figure out how to go from there.
Karen
I just tested it Dave. Typed in 4 paragraphs and it did not delete the text. (I'm using IE 6.0)

I'm losing posts in both regular threads and in d-mail.
I tried your box and here's a cut and paste of what I added however I didn't know what to do with it from there either and I didn't lose what I was typing as described by terryr which is pretty much exactly what has been happening to me.

Replace hyperlins WITH NEW HYPERLINK
So the box I gave is working fine, but threads and dmail aren't?
I haven't had problems with it deleting text except for the one day. It did it 3 or 4 times that day. I'm thinking that was either Mon or Tues.
It's been an intermittent problem. I don't know if trying your box once is enough to get it to recreate what's been happening and besides which, there's no preview or send to that box.
It just happened again. Both of my back and forward buttons were blue. I clicked forward and I clicked backward and could not restore what I have been typing. And now I can't remember where the thread was that I was typing in because it came up in my thread watcher before I started messing around with the back and forward buttons. Bummer.
I'll go turn over my computer via remote access and have it checked for malware. Maybe they can find something that none of my applications can find. Totally doesn't make sense to me as most malware comes in via e-mail and I haven't had e-mail yet on this new computer, just d-mail and that's always been clean.
I don't think it's your computer Equilibrium. It's happening to too many people
There's another problem which happened to me just now, I typed a response in the Plant ID forum, but it only gave the first two words, second attempt the first line plus the two words, 3rd attempt the first line which I tried to give the info I wnated to give. I edited to add the rest which worked.
This has happened once before too, with adding the rest of the message by editing.

I had the jump thing happening for awhile too but not the past week or two. It really was odd.
This is just a thought....do those of you with IE have MSN Hotmail? I was having a bunch of problems with my computer...in DG and elsewhere. Then I got a message from MSN saying that they were going to be updating all of their Hotmail accounts and did I want it now or randomly....I really didn't pay any attention. Then the problems started getting worse, so I was looking around, found that message from MSN, and had them finish whatever they were doing to "update" me....and whadayaknow, the problems went away...
Could these bouncing problems be connected to that???
Terry - I am not having the problem with things disappearing, but today I tried numerous times, over and over, to upload photos to a new thread I created. I hit preview, and the picture was there, but when I hit Send, there was no thread, no picture nothing. Sometimes I had to upload one picture 4-5 times before it would show up in the thread!! And I uploaded about ten pix so you can imagine how frustrating that was! I even rebooted my computer thinking that something had jammed up in mine. I have Windows XP and I.E. we just did a virus scan so that isn't it.
Karen
No, soprry, I don't have a hotmail account.
Karen, four questions:
1) How large were the photos? (in pixels and/or kbs - we recommend photos 480x640 to 800x600, and not much bigger.)
2) Did you get a timeout message when they didn't upload? If not, what did you see?
3) What kind of connection do you have? (High speed cable/DSL, or some type of dial-up?)
4) If the photos were all going in a single thread, were you adding unique text to each image? (If you don't add any text, or add the same text, the system won't let you post it.)
No hotmail account, no yahoo account, no account other than what comes with my ISP and even then I have to get an e-mail client so that the mail download from their server.
I'm clean according to the people who just checked my computer.
I also only have mail thru my ISP who is Verizon. No MSN Hotmail on here.
Windows has some "sticky keys" that can be activated if you press a key too many times in a row. Once you do that, you get in "shortcut mode"and anytime you hit a particular keystroke sequence, it will run a particular command instead of doing what you think it should be doing. Here's a quick tutorial on sticky keys: http://www.ehow.com/how_10299_sticky-keys-windows.html
In addition, Internet Explorer also has shortcut commands (similar to sticky keys, but they do different things:) Here's a short list of the shortcut commands in IE7: http://www.maximumpcguides.com/internet-explorer-keyboard-and-mouse-shortcuts/
I'm wondering if some of you have accidentally triggered the shortcut and/or sticky keys in either Windows or I.E.
Terry - I have highspeed DSL connection. I didn't know that you had to put different text in each reply, or that you couldn't just put a pic and no text, but I figured that out after a few minutes and started changing what I wrote. That probably was part of the problem to begin with.
I did try combining several pix into one, but it was way too big & wouldn't upload, so I went back to uploading just one at the time...and they are not too big because I have never had a problem uploading one single picture.
When I would browse and then do preview, the picture and message would come up. Then I would hit send...the screen immediately took me to the screen that offers you options to either go to the Home page, go back to the thread you just replied to, or other options. I would always hit "back to the thread to which I just replied" and when I got there, there was no new reply with the pic in it! I would repeat the process at least 4 times before it would take!!
Karen
Hmm...do you think Terry is trying to tell us we talk to much?? LOL!
If this problem hadn't been happening to so many people all at once that may have been an acceptable explanation.
On looking at the shortcut commands I can't see how this would have just emptied the page of typing and caused the page to bounce up as the shortcut options don't seem to have appeared in any of the cases mentioned above.
I don't have hotmail either but I do know that MSN hotmail can use your information as they please.
I do type fast and could be making mistakes but I don't see how those sticky keys and shortcuts could be wiping out my posts. And, I don't have e-mail right now because I never installed an e-mail client yet. Was afraid to do that with so many new computer issues.
About all I can say is that I am relatively confident my computer is clean right about now.
no hotmail here.
Shortcut keys aren't going to make it bounce up when I type and then I can't see what I'm typing. I type fast also, but not so fast that I've ever hit a shortcut key by mistake. I also don't think hitting a shortcut key would make somebody's whole post disappear.
babybluesntn........you can only add one picture at a time to a post. I don't think it's possible to even add any more than one. But nobody here is complaining about adding photos and losing a whole post or my issue with it bouncing up into text I've already written. I'm not adding in any photos.
cat64129........nobody would ever accuse me of talking too much! They know better than to accuse, it's just a fact ;o)
All right Terry! Careful there, I don't get mad, I get even! LOL!
It just happened again. I am trying to post a new thread to get help identifying a succulent and it won't let me attach a picture. Have tried 3 times. I typed the message, the browsed to the pic and attached. It sits and sits and the bar moves super slow, then kicks me back to a blank dialogue box. Grrr....!!! Frustrating! I will try it again in a minute.
Just tried again, same result. I went in the normal way, thru IE, typed my message on the new thread, browsed to the pic, then hit preview. It sat for a full minute before the attaching "bar" went all the way across. Then sat for 2 more min, and blanked my message and the pic out. Went back to a totally blank new thread box.
For grins, I then went in through Firefox and tried. Same results.
Weird stuff going on tonight! I think I'll forget it for now and go to bed. Try again in the morning.
cat64129 - it sounds like your image is too large to post. I don't know what the correct pixel count is to post but you might want to start another thread to ask about that.
I have no clue on what the pixels are when my camera puts the images over onto the computer. I do know that I can resize, e-mail and web and of course I can customize it. I have forgotten to do it before and DG still takes my picture. It takes forever, but it goes thru.
