That is so cute Amy! OK..talked me into it..lol.. I might have to try it once and see what happens now : )

I think it's only right that this baby come to live with you. What do you think?

Are you serious??OMG I would love that Amy! Hey I can send you a couple leaves from her cousins as a trade?

edited to correct my spelling with all the excitement letters were flying where they didn't belong.

This message was edited Aug 29, 2007 1:46 PM

Well of course I'm serious! LOL I wouldn't have it at all if not for you! :o) I'd love to have leaves of your others, but not til they're big enough that you feel comfortable taking them off. I'll dmail you... :o)

(Zone 1)

Ooooh! Thanks for all this great information you two!! I am excited now! I had no idea you could grow these from leaves! Looking at one of the photo's in that last link you posted Amy:

http://www.dollyyeh.idv.tw/Petrocosmea_barbata_2005avsa_2.jpg....

makes me think my plant needs more room, out of the glass jar. Those leaves are really spreading out in that photo!

Nancy: When your plants get larger I would love to try one leaf from each. Let me try with my own plant first to see if I can get the hang of it. I have grown AV's from leaves for years, sometimes with good luck, sometimes not such good luck!

Well, I'm off to google some more!

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Sounds like a deal to me.Thank You : ))

edited to add.You are welcome to them Lin.Just let me know when you are ready for them.Good luck and keep us posted on how your leaves do.

Ok ... Forget that link ... I don't know what happened there - I really don't read or speak chinese or what ever that language is.

The photo I was referring to is in the last link you posted: photo # 4 of Pet. barbata

Yes, it does look like that one will need room! Little leaves going everywhere! LOL Lin, when I get brave enough to repot this one, I can send you a leaf or two from it. I'm sure I'll break several off when I take it out of the glass. ;o)

There were 4 periods at the end of the link. I backspaced them and got right to it. Here's the link: http://www.dollyyeh.idv.tw/Petrocosmea_barbata_2005avsa_2.jpg

(Zone 1)

Same here ladies .... I will have leaves from P. barbata for both of you too if you want them!

Yay! :o) Thank you both very much! :o)

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Thank you both Very Much Too : )

Lin, what I want to know is how is your Chirita 'Little Dragon' doing? It's just the cutest thing, and Rob is sold out! *pout* LOL

(Zone 1)

Oh, Little Dragon is still very little! LOL. Very Slow growing. He's still in a little teeny pot .... I'll go take his picture!

Ok, here is 'Little Dragon' and he is little! This one doesn't seem to grow very fast it seems! I can't wait for it to get to blooming size! When he gets bigger you can have a leaf or two if you want to try growing it from a leaf!

This was an awesome thread to come upon today, been so busy I haven't been keeping up with the new threads lately. So many things I'd love to give a try just from this one thread!!

Rain I was so glad when you had said that my strep leaves hadn't come up for you yet cause I thought I was doing something wrong with the ones you traded me for as they hadn't produced for me. I put them down like you did (like an AV leaf) which was a first for me, I'd been having success with taking the veins out and laying the whole leaf down but I really wanted the ones from you to succeed so I did it the AV way. I did put them down in those square plastic baby food containers and I can see a lot of roots so I have high hopes. My son was a bit enthusiastic with the watering of them when I was gone but I'm still hoping they will soon be looking like Tractor Beam does for you now! Kitten Face is still the healthiest looking leaf and has the best root system so I'm excited.

I've had an episcia called Scarlet Ribbons for a long long time. I barely kept it alive for months and then I finally joined DG and saw that the episcias like extra humidity so I put her in a terrarium and she was finally happy. Yesterday I was walking by the terrarium and got a blast of color, Scarlett Ribbons had bloomed and she is a beauty!! If I had a decent camera you'd really be able to tell but here's a semi clear shot. She is a beautiful coraly pink with white edges and a yellow throat!

Gail I put the Raspberry Tart episcia you sent me in my bingo box in this terrarium too and she is doing very well, her leaves are just so pretty!

Brenda, those are both Beautiful Episcia's! I am still learning with these Episcia's and hope to get as good as it as some of y'all are! I sure wish I could talk hubby into giving up his fish and coral's in the 150 gal aquarium .... I still think it would make a Perfect Terrarium for some of my plants!!!

Lin, that Little Dragon looks good! It's grown since the last picture I saw of it. It may just be a slower grower than the others, but it looks nice and healthy. Surely Rob will have more available soon. If not, though, I'll take you up on your offer one day. :o)

Brenda, some Strep leaves are faster than others, just like AVs and everything else, I guess. Party Girl isn't showing anything yet, but I'm watching her like a hawk! LOL

I love using clear pots for my plants. It's reassuring to me to be able to see the roots and know they're doing well. I've started potting almost everything in the squatty 9 oz plastic "party cups". They're crystal clear and I can see everything that's going on with the roots. I'll have to take a picture of Kohleria 'Nicole's Smile' for you. You can see the rhizomes putting up plants under the potting mix!

Scarlet Ribbons is beautiful! A very unique bloom! I like it very much!

(Zone 1)

Oh, I can't wait to see a pic of 'Nicole's Smile' Kohleria! That must be so neat seeing the rhizomes under the mix!

I'm going to take a picture now.

I haven't looked at it in a few days and wow! It's going crazy! I'm not even sure what it's trying to do here! LOL

Here's a picture of the plant. I cut it back, though only sparingly in places. I was scared to death! LOL But it's already filling out very nicely.

Thumbnail by RainGazer

That was kind of a butcher job on it, but I'll do better next time. It looks like it wants to bloom now. The last bud it had didn't make it, so I don't really have anything to compare these to, but I'm hoping these are buds. Think they are?

(Zone 1)

That is really wild! I love it! I'm amazed at how they put out greenery beneath the surface of the soil!

(Zone 1)

Those do look like they may be flower buds!

I am not sure that under there is supposed to look like that! LOL I may need to set it in a pot so light doesn't get to the parts below the potting mix. That might not be healthy. Anybody know? Snowrose, anything you would suggest? Whatever the case, it's interesting and I do enjoy being able to see the roots so I can tell if they look healthy.

I sure hope those are buds! I've looked up the picture and the blooms are beautiful! Thank you so much for sending this one to me, Brenda! :o)

(Zone 1)

I must some day try another Kohleria. Got a K. 'Dark Walnut' from Jannich a couple of months ago and it died on me. :( I'm not sure what I did wrong. Thought maybe it was dormant but I think it rotted - couldn't even find the rhizome in the soil when I got back from vacation.

Awww, that's sad, Lin! I've got cuttings of this one rooting up, so maybe you'd like one of those. :o)

(Zone 1)

I just want to learn a bit more about these plants first .... I would really feel even worse if I got another of the same one and killed it! I really need to do some reading ... I need to print out the info I find since I don't retain much anymore, LOL .... I like having printed words to refer back to! I'm always printing out the info from Plant Files! I even bought a file box to hold all of them!

Lin, we were hijacking makshi's Bingo thread, so let's move the plant-hanging discussion over here. :o) I had said, in reply to your plan of hanging curtain rods from the ceiling:

I'm actually thinking that might be what I do. Hubby has finally given up hope and realized that resistance is futile. This house will be a jungle in the winter, and there's no two ways about it. LOL I've got blinds that are hung inside the window frame, so I could probably hang the curtain rods normally and that would work for me.

About the Kohleria, I'm growing it right along with all the other Gessies on my light stand. I found a care sheet for them once... Let me go see if I can find where it was and link it here for you...

Here's that page, Lin. Tells a bit about Kohlerias, where there from, and some cultural requirements. Maybe this will help a little. :o) http://www3.telus.net/vavgs/intro_kohleria.pdf

(Zone 1)

Oh, that would be great if you can find that care sheet for Kohleria's! I can print it out!

edited to say: Thanks Amy! I am printing it as I type!

This message was edited Aug 29, 2007 8:20 PM

You're welcome! It's not super in-depth, but it might help some. I'll look around and see if I can find anything else about them. I could stand to learn plenty more, myself! :o)

At the bottom of this page, there are links to PDF information sheets on several different Gesneriads, just like the one above for Kohlerias. You might enjoy looking at those, too. http://www3.telus.net/vavgs/information.html

(Zone 1)

Oh Thanks ... I'm gonna check out that link now!

No Kohlerias here, that I saw in quickly scrolling, but some neat Gessie information here, nonetheless. http://www.cloudjungle.com/epibook/Gesneri.html

(Zone 1)

I am printing all of that information in your first link! Going now to check out the next one.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I keep coming back for pictures....................there are noooooooo pictures......boo hoo.........

(Zone 1)

Amy ... that last link has some good info too. Saw the name of a plant I have never heard of: Fieldia australis .... sounded interesting until I saw that it has stems that reach 118 inches in length! Now, I know I have a small jungle but that one is just waaaay too much!
