North Texas RoundUp - Trade page 2

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

I have some baby cottonwoods growing in the equipment yard here at work. Does anyone want one? They'll be killed if nobody wants them.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Cottonwoods are great trees.. just fast growing and short lived - I have been growing some here from cuttings from the oldest trees I can find - one in the park is thought to be 75 years old... two in Italy are known to be 100 plus years old so I am praying the cuttings from old trees will live long lifes too...

All that to say I will pass but these are great trees. City Sylvia was looking for some fast growing trees and might want them.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Mitch I guess she hasn't noticed that I have some Silver Maples on my list, she said she wanted some too.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

She does - she is looking to buy some right now... let me email her and see what is up...

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Alright I sent her an email and will see when she gets over here.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Her and Debnes have been almost silent on the trade thread. Guess they are busy getting plants ready for us???? LOL!

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Bronch, are you still willing to root the rose of Sharon? I can root Mexican bush sage Santa Barbara for you. It is a dwarf version about 2 1/2 ft tall. It is my first year with it, but it is supposed to be hardy to zone 8.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Can I put in a request? :)

IF anyone had wisteria vines that they will be trimming back or pulling up that you do not want I would gladly take some off your hands. grapevines, bittersweet, coralberry and honeysuckle are acceptable too

I am pulling the ones growing through my yard up rolling them like you would a rope and tying them so they stay round.
then when I have enough to fill my canning pot I lightly boil them and pull off the outer bark.
I make 2 groups bark strips and "core" strips and re roll them to save to use to make baskets.

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

My parents have a ton of wisteria volunteers coming up even though the main plant is gone. I will see if I can dig some for you.

Kim

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

they are pretty easy to pull up if they are growing along the top ..I look for the leaves I and start pulling and go which ever way they go then when I get as far as I can I cut it off.

Thanks Kim

Don't know about Deb. But I think Sylvia is quiet on the trade thread because she mostly grows hostas, and not too many others here do.

I've seen several posts lately from people who were wondering about even coming because they think they don't have much to trade. Three years ago I was just starting to relandscape my whole house, and I didn't have anything big enough to share. So I didn't come.

I really hope no one else will stay home for that reason. The whole fun of the RU is to get together. I've been a DG member for awhile, but this will be the first RU I've been able to make. Much as I love plants, I'm going because of people. I can't wait to finally meet all you guys. (I mean, I've been to Sylvia's house, and met her neighbor, but haven't met her yet. LOL!)

As far as the plant swap goes, I just gotta say, I, for one, am not looking trades for this event. I LIKE to share plants. The trade list is helpful so I know that I need a dozen coneflowers instead of 2 or 3. But mostly I just propagate everything I can figure out how to propagate, and will bring as much as I can cram into my car. If you do have something to trade, well, hey, I've never been one to pass up the chance to try growing something new! But if you don't, then sharing is a great way to help you get started, and a lot of us would like that. So please don't stay home for that reason.

Mibus, let's have a discussion. :: climbing on Josephine's soapbox for a minute ::

I'll be trimming back my Chinese wisteria. (I am ALWAYS pruning my Chinese wisteria.) I don't know how to root it, but I can't imagine that it's hard. If you want unrooted cuttings, I can bring as many as you want. But, are you SURE you want to plant it? Seriously. I love vines--almost any vine--and wisteria is the king of vines. I love the nice little arbor it provides for my terrace. And when it's in bloom, I'm like a cat with catnip. Wisteria is second only to gardenias on my favorites list. BUT... despite all of that, it's not really a good choice. You think, "Well, I'll train it as a nice little tree, and I love it so much, I don't mind cutting it back." But after just a year or two, it has to be pruned back CONSTANTLY, or it will choke out, literally, everything in sight. That includes your house, or your fence, or whatever it's near. It's on the invasives list for just that reason. Birds spread it, and it runs rampant and chokes out native trees in the wild.

I'm saying all of this because you probably love the stuff, like I do, so you want to plant it anyway. Same here. But I didn't know then that I could have my cake and eat it too. If you can find it, the native American wisteria smells just as heavenly but still behaves itself. I'm planning to replace mine next spring. I'd do it now, but I want to see one more of those glorious blooms first. :)

Same thing for Japanese honeysuckle. I had a 17-year-old hedge of it that was cleared in July. I've been pulling up the roots that have new growth, and I'm sure I could find you a piece or two. But it's not a good choice either. My bed formed a thicket in a difficult area, which is what I wanted back then. And I'm into habitats, and the birds love it, and there were all kinds of little critters living in there, so I hesitated to dig it up. I finally did because I've spent 16 long years dealing with the neighbors' complaints and trying to keep it out of the grass, trees, flower beds, and their yards. It grew in, and ate, my wood retaining wall. It even grew out in the concrete alley and came up in the lines. Eventually it got 3-4 inches in diameter, and pruning was a very hot, sweaty, all-day job with the chain saw--and it was still just barely under control. The birds love it. But imagine what it's like when they spread it and it runs unchecked. There are other things the birds love just as much.

So.... all that said, I can give you cuttings from both. But if you've never grown them before, you should know what's down the road in a few years.

Very well said Pbtxlady! and you can climb on my soap box any time! I love all plants too, we just have to use them in a responsible manner so we don't create a problem in the wild.
As you said the swap is not so much about trading but about sharing and meeting each other, and this time with Dave coming, it will be even more exciting.
Josephine.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Talk about growing in the wild. Anyone want yaupon? I have a two acre yaupon thicket. The birds, squirrels and deer love them and whey they put on the red berries they are pretty. However, if you have a pasture full of them and you need the space for your cattle, they are a real bother.

I would love the cottonwoods Broncbuster. I have no shade and need all the fast growing trees anyone has with the exception of tallow trees or paulina as they can ruin a pasture.

Charlene

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Broncbuster, the more shade trees and the bigger shade trees might just get you your own private bowl of nanner puddin. LOL

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Charlene, I could use a few yaupon shrubs, do I have anything that you would like?

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Charlene, I also would like a few of your yaupons.

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Charlene I would like some too.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Frostweed, how about 4 yaupons for 4 Mexican milkweeds?
Charlene

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Patrob, I would like little blue stem and some shasta daisies. Also do you have phaison tropicanna canna lily? If not would you trade for your red stripe? How many yaupons do you want?
Charlene

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

TarRogers, how many yaupons do you want? I didn't find anything on your trade list that you posted for haves to trade. Did I look in the wrong spot. Don't worry if you don't have a trade for me, I'll still gladly bring your yaupons. LOL
Charlene

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Charlene Thank you, 4 Mexican milkweed coming up for you.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Charlene, three yaupons would be great if you have enough. I'll put you down for bluestem grass, shasta daisies, and red stripe canna. I'd love to have a start of your Tropicanna too. It's beautiful!
Patricia

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Let everyone now to come if they have something or not.. My first year I was the driving force to get this thing together and I had nothing I mean nothing to trade. I came and sat and love to meet people and came home with a car LOADED with plants...

Then again I still take any and every plant I can...

So please do come.

I am speaking for city syliva - have not heard back for sure but I know she will want them. so TJ would love several cottonwoods and Josephine she would love the silver maple.
Thank you from her in advance...

Mitch

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I am speaking up for Mibus2..........before the thread gets too long.

Since she hasn't responded. It sounds to me like she is a crafter that uses the vines to make baskets, she isn't wanting rooted cuttings, (but she might not turn them down). She is wanting vines to use to weave baskets with because she addressed boiling them to get the bark off, etc.
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=4004137

So if you have some you need to trim back that are still green, put them in a garbage bag for her before you put them in the compost.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

O.K. Mitch, saving the Silver Maple for Sylvia

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

;-)

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

pat...could I have some shasta daisies too?

:) Kim

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Of course, Kim. I'll add them to my "promised" list tomorrow when I get a fresh supply of "edits."

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Charlene I edited my list so it would make more sense. Bring a lot. LOL

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

Well y'all have been busy today on here I see. LOL

I had to be to work at 9:30-9:15 as the boss was out today for his sons BD party and of course worked all day till close.
I may feel kinda outta place but that is just me being new to Texas, but it is NOT going to keep me from coming to the RU even if I come alone...Have to be brave and venture out to meet people some how LOL

Sheila Thanks you are correct I am wanting them vines for making baskets.

pbtxlady
I learned from previous conversations that going with American wisteria to grow for flowers is better and I hope to make some trellis' from the bamboo we cut for vines to grow on...just have to decide where to put them.

I plan on making up some more and bringing them for the raffle/drawing or whatever it is *S*
but I will need more vines so I can make some up for x-mas gifts ...I am going to make one for my mom for her anniversary then have 2 friends up north that I figure why not surprise them with one each for x-mas.
heck if we could grow colored glass on trees or vines I would ask for that too then I could get some stained glass sun catchers made up and bring too...seeing how hubby won't let me go out back and help him until he gets the PI out.
