Scattelogical ramblings and desultory humor - Part III

Bouillabaisse the humble 'fisherman's stew'. I will eat that in my sleep.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Isn't there a pill for that? Sleep eating?

Get up walk to fridge. Get what ever crackers, soup etc. Next morning wake up with face in the bowl.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Somnoshing.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I have discovered (to my horror) that there is this snack/treat cheesecake that you can buy for $1.29. And you don't have to refrigerate it . Now how bad is this cheesecake that it doesn't even require refridgeration - I mean, what is the chemical content? What is worse is - I really like them - and they don't taste like chocolate :-)

Oh - why the horror? Because of the extraordinary amount of self-discipline I must exercize. I can resist buying a $12 cheesecake because nobody in the family will eat it except me - but an individual serving??? That I can stock up with - use in my lunches at work? That is full of chemicals? (most likely) YIKES! resist! resist! resist!

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

Resistance is futile!

Frugal you spend time and money.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Oscar Wilde's quote, meant for Seandor: I can resist anything except temptation.

in trouble ?. I will do anything for money except spread my vines, twigs or runners.

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

Oh, pirl! Why didn't I think of that? That is one of my all-time faves! "Of course I have willpower... I can resist everything except temptation". That's me to a T! Oscar was a very astute observer of human nature.

Dee

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Alas - unlike Oscar, I can not give in to temptation - genetics is against me. I would LOVE to indulge in endless cheesecake, coffeecakes, pies, icecream, cookies - especially oatmeal-raisin, butter tarts, matrimonial cake, fruit cake, plum puddings - but my mother is quite obese, so if I don't want to look like her, I must show some restraint.

Although I can make all the above (well maybe not the icecream), I generally don't 'cause I could easily devour the whole batch myself.

Discipline is everything! - well - at least where watching my weight is concerned. . . sigh.

But once I am 85 - I plan to eat everything I want as often as I want. I would rather check out with a massive heart attack triggered by clogged arteries than go out slowly as one organ after another fails. . . . So, at 85 I get to have as much cheesecake as I want! Something to look forward to in my old age. :-)

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Seandor, I hate to burst your bubble, but I recently read in a money magazine of all places, that the average 50 year old person today has the possibility of living to 150. You might have to rethink that gluttoney to 125 years old :>)

Ffld County, CT(Zone 6b)

Yikes, would we want to live to 150 if we couldn't eat cake?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

No thanks to that 150 marker, Victor. Not even 125.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That wasn't me! Man, my joints are falling apart now. Imagine at 150!!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Sorry, Victor! Now I see it was venu who said it. Even the thought of 100 is more than I can handle. I'll take Seandor's way out eating cheesecake.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Death by cheesecake? Not bad.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Victor - I take Omega Man pills to keep me from turning in to a zombie.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Al and Omega, of course. Beginning and end!

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Yep, that was me and my reaction when reading it was, Yikes I do NOT want to live 150 years, unless of course I had the body, mind and organs of a 40 year old and money was no longer needed. Then I'd stick around a bit. With one big slice of German Chocolate cake once a week

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Imagine all the generations of offspring!!! I already forget my two kids' names sometimes.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Victor - I'm the new Charleton Heston. Got a crop of Soylent Green coming up too.

I think they are Benny and June.

That was a good movie.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

They will no doubt import the soylent green from china, then have another recall.

My mom is 94. Everyone except her children that she ever knew in her life has died. She is rational but no short term memory now. All her sibs lived into their 90s too, she is the baby. She is so bored now with life, eyes and ears are going, I don't think 150 sounds so good, pass the cheesescake please. :)

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I liked Benny & June too.

Michaela, All Americans or just women? (the chocolate obsession). I think many of us just see it as good candy not a religous experience.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Benny & June? I thought it was Darby and Joan, "The Folks who live on the Hill", Mel Torme, probably the 1950's. See how out of touch I am?

I have short term memory but can't admit to always being rational. More cheesecake!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

No, seriously. Americans seem obsessed with chocolate. When I go to the supermarket to buy groceries - practically the only ingredients in the baking aisle are chocolate, walnuts, and coconut. Now you can get chocolate in numerous variations - chipped, chunked, squares, dark, semi-sweet, etc.

But, I really have to search for golden raisins, currants, lemon peel, dates, etc. Then when I do find them, they are in little tiny pouches (usually from Dole) and extraordinarily expensive. Dates, for example, can be bought in BC relatively cheaply as a two-pound block of pitted dates. The block has measurements marked down the side, and you just slice off however much pitted dates are called for in the recipe. I have not found anything like that here.

Regarding living to 150. As an environmental sociologist, this will have profound effects on the social order, both domestically and internationally, as those will affluence seek to extend their lives at the expense of those who can barely live a normal lifespan. Thus, social inequality will be further increased. Environmentally, it means that those who are already most responsible for global climate change will have doubled the amount of time they can affect the environment. This cannot be a good thing.

Perhaps there should be a limit on the size of "footprint" (the amount of resources one uses) one can have over a lifetime. Some might choose to live a short, hedonistic life, and croak at age 30, others might be more "resourceful" (sorry for the bad pun) and stretch it out over 150 years. That might work. But most people would not want 150 years of spartan existence. Most want 150 years of what we have now - and that is not ecologically sustainable with a 75 year lifespan.

ooops - sorry for the lecture - sometimes I can't help myself . . . .

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Please pass the chocolate.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

you mean cheesecake, right? Well, I suppose it could be chocolate amaretto cheesecake. . .

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

You are right about the items on the baking aisle being versions of chocolate. I think it speaks as much to the lack of imagination as anything else.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yup, pass the chocolate......or should I? I'm a full fledged chocoholic. I eat chocolate every day rather I need it or not. Love fish...all fish except scallops. My favorite would be shrimp and haddock and I don't want to live past 75 thank you!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, I must confess - I do hope to live to be at least 85. I figure, since I started my career so late in life, that I will have to work until I am 80 to justify all this education - that leaves five years for retirement.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Chocolate is a sure - fire remedy for the urge to lecture!!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Medical science will certainly come up with something to make our over-100 years as good as our over 50 years, I would think.

But, don't you know that the government will keep raising the age for true retirement if we live to be 150!!

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Double fudge Amaretto cheesecake with candied walnuts on top and Haggan-Daz French Vanilla ice cream on the side. (maybe a sip or two of a vintage Tawny Port also ?) Alas, non-fat yogurt and Rye Crisp may have to do.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Seandor re: your chemical cheesecake

I have long agonized over my kids' propensity for drinking shakes from McDonalds and the like - ice cream that is solid at room temperature! What a society! Woe is me! My DH has convinced my two girls that they require chocolate for three or four days a month - RIDICULOUS!

Chocolate, sugar, coffee, cream ... all are staples in my home.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Cream... now you're talking. And they have that at Staples, you say? Don't forget BUTTER!
