Today's Weather in Your Garden

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, it seems the last 6 or 7 years have had some type of extreme - very dry, very wet, very hot or very mild. Funny how with different conditions each year, different weeds will dominate.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Seandor, I can't remember it ever being this dry, but we usually get the hot and sticky's during July and August.
Hey, did you guys know that the "dog days of summer" were named so because in summer the constellation Sirius (the dog star) rises and sets with the sun? The "ancients" believed that since it was so bright, the earth received extra heat from it. Interesting . . .

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I did know that.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Me too but still find it fasinating!!

Feels like Summer! 86 degrees at 2 PM.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I apologize...can not spell to save my soul today, it must be the humidity!!!!!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

It is broiling outside - my brugs will like the heat - but I am staying in my airconditioned office.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

oh it's stiky!!!! can't wait to go home and dig some holes~~~

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Beautiful day. High was 83 and it's 76 now. I packaged more trades, moved more daylilies (to give to a neighbor) to make room for many more dahlias next year, added lots of compost to new JI's and other transplanted daylilies, edged (yes, with a scissors), and enjoyed the day. I even quit early! It felt like half a day but it was 6 hours out there.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

88 here right now! High for the day. It's hot. Too hot for me.

Scissors, Pirl?!!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes, Victor. Not every garden, just where I was working so I can see where I finished.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'll send you a nail clipper!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, but I have a wide array of them for clipping.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

It's horrible out there today. Hot and Humid!!! I didn't work in the garden but did housework inside with the AC on. Eleanor

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Kassia, I'm almost afraid to ask, but what are you digging holes for?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Sunny again, nice breeze but more humid and already 88. Watered again but hoping for a little help from rain tonight and tomorrow through monday.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

First rain in 22 days! Just scattered thunder showers. Made it to 94 degrees, very humid, low for tonight is supposed to 74 degrees!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Oh can you send them a little more east when you are done with them? The poor birch trees can't even support yellow leaves any more, they are just getting brown and dried up now. The maples aren't too far behind them, rain, any amount more than a sprinkle would be very welcome.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Will do my best :-)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I had a whole field of astilbes that just dried up due to lack of rain and though we have the system on three times a week, for an hour in each zone, it's just not as good as rain.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Oh pirl that's just awful. Do you think they have gone dormant or just gone? :( I am watering by hand, no auto systems allowed here, and no matter how long you water it is never enough and just not like a good rain soaking. Things are staying alive in the garden because of my watering, but the woods look just awful. The oaks are okay they have deep roots but even they will be in trouble if we don't get some rain soon. All the wild ferns are brown and shriveled, I'm hoping they are just going dormant too. The other thing is risk of fire. With 80 acres of wilderness and thick woods on three sides of my yard, if a fire got going back there, no way to stop it. The rain is just sitting there north east of me and sliding off to the north. A little nudge to the east would be good.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

They've just gone dormant and might even bounce back with some new growth. I put down a very thick layer of compost and hoping for the best.

Fire is a real threat to you! Let's hope for rain tonight and hope the forecasters are right with a few days of rain this week.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

WE could all engage in a Gabrielle Dance to lure her to the Northwest of where she is. We could convolute some sayings: The big Apple shrivels without rain. the garden state degardens without rain, New Hampshire, live rain or die...or is that Vermont, but you get my drift.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'll join the dance Weeze. Hopefully we will get something from Gabrielle. The current model has it zooming up the coast but offshore quite a bit.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Ya the last report I saw said that Gabby was coming right up the coast then turn right just south of us. Another near miss, rats! I watch the little green blobs on the radar. "Oh good look at that, its headed right for us, no way it can miss" .... then they either fizzle out going over the hills just to the west of here or split in two, half goes just north and half goes just south, its maddening! Don't get me wrong I am definitely not a fan of lightning at all but even a thunder boomer would make me happy now.

Tell them about it, Kassia, and they'll send you what you ordered (hopefully they'll have them) next spring, for free. Toll free number is 1-800-944-2250.
