oh, but it's beautiful! I've wanted a potentilla for so long (I don't know why LOL) and then found out I could start them from seed. what fun!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Looks good Jan. I think I like red and yellow roses the best. Glad to see you can remember the old days - ah, the roaring '20's.
Can't get anymore red than Barbarossa can you.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Gram those are lovely! I think your right on the cooler temps making the flowers deeper in color. I've noticed it too on some of my flowers. I must say that I am smitten with your 'Well Being', "Sunsprite' and "My Wild Irish Rose'...those really "do it' for me. Glad to see your mallow grw fine for you, did it get very tall this year? Mine its about 3.5' - 4' tall this year, much taller than the first 2 years I grew it.

Gram ... lovely, absolutely lovely, photos. I loved 'Wild Irish Rose', too.

Al - good thought with the hosta test.

Nice shots Jan. Freckles is real nice.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Absolutely lovely roses and adorable lady bug. Great pics all!

Whitehall, PA(Zone 6a)

Thank you for the lovely pictures everyone! I wish I had more to share right now. I am loving this weather (now that the rain has subsided)!

Grampapa- Love that obedient plant, and your roses are so beautiful! I have the Strawberry Candy dl that I am hoping reblooms also, but I don't see any sign of new flower stalks yet. Maybe it will still happen, or should I give up hope?

Al- I am sure there are a million kinds of flies, but the ones in your photos look like the same ones I have this year... the ones that like to bite me.

Too bad I just missed a shot I could have posted..... my dog was looking out the front door and all of a sudden got excited and ran to the window in the next room. That usually means some sort of animal in the front yard. Sure enough, I went to look out the window and there was a squirrel running across the street... with a tomato from my garden in his mouth. The nerve!

Beautiful pics from everyone.....love that strawberry candy rebloomer! And Onewish - that is a nice shot of your potentilla. I just realized that mine didn't come back over the winter last year. I love them!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yeah, the nerve of that squirrel, Aspen!

Jan, those rose and other flower photos just blew me away. Beautiful!

Aspen - how funny - I just had the exact same thing happen with a squirrel, except he had one of my apples and was making a bee-line across my path with it. The squirrels have made fast and loose with every apple on my Granny Smith and now they have just about finished the Red Delicious tree! None for us this year! Here's a shot of the strange contraption I had to rig up to keep the chipmunks from eating my new salad greens.....that's bridal netting stretched over coat hanger wire.........looks pretty strange, but it's worked so far!

LOL!!!!

Gram where did you get potentilla seeds?

Finally took pictures today but have to install software to down/upload them!

Now is still the time for some hostas to bloom. Royal Standard is not only a beautiful flower, but has a delicious scent.
Red Cardinal flower Lobiela Cardinalis and a similiar hybrid which is a bright Fuscia light up the garden beds, These lobelias need plenty of water but this year we have had a surplus of rain here so they are even better than usual.
The Japanese Anemones are starting to bloom, mainly Pink Charm. They can be invasive so confine them to a bed where it doesn't matter.

I said on another thread that my fragrant Hostas, including Royal Standard, are much less fragrant this year.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I have that red cardinal flower (lobelia whatever) in a container because I can't figure out where to put it. It has the really dark foliage and now, the bright red flowers. What kind of spot would make it happy? It's a lot taller than I was expecting! (It looks great among the containers, but I know it wants a real home.)

Ngam- I didn't know the tree rats ate apples too! I used to think they were cute, but I have come to despise them. Good idea with the netting over your greens. I was thinking about draping some bird netting over my maters to save what's left, so I think I will get on that tomorrow.

Carrie- I have a very happy 2nd year Lobelia Cardinalis in a spot where it gets sun from morning til about 12pm, then shade for the rest of the day. I make sure I water it every few days if we don't get rain, but It doesn't seem to need overly moist conditions. It does wilt when it gets really hot, but perks right up when it cools down.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Victor - I have two big beds of Hosta Plantaginea and can't smell them this year. I thought it was just me so I'm glad to know I have good company.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I got it to go under/against the shrubs in the front yard, as other people in my town have something red that brightens up the foundation plantings about now. But this is waaaay to tall for that type of spot! Maybe it's annual - Gosh, I can't remember the name but you know, that bright red annual that looks stupid if you plant one (I did that once) but usually goes in groups with annual salvias.

Aspen that was DonnyBrook's tree rat with the apple but I have one called Einstein that will take down and carry off every suet cage I put out in the winter no matter what I use to hang it with, rope chain bungy(sp) cords. I caught him with one about fifty feet from where it was hanging dragging it towards the woods. He has snagged five of them. I did find three this summer in the woods a ways. Great little thieves aren't they. I rather have them steal suet and birdseed than chew up my garden. I guess they gotta eat too so I feed them year round, it keeps both of us happy. :)

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Ngam - Einstein has been swinging by my place when he takes a break from yours....Such a little athlete he is!!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I can't smell my plantingineas - or much else. I can say they are they toughest hosta I have, they are thriving in the hosta torture chamber.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

VIctor - this photo was not improved with PhotoShop - I swear.LOL

Now that you mention it my RS hosta just started blooming and I have not got the usual in your face dose of sweet smelliness either. Hmmm? Could it be the cooltemps and grey days of late?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Woooa! Al that makes my eyeballs spin. Just like when the vertigo attacks, cool.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I'm sure you can guess the bug - how about the flower?

Victor - I do believe you asked about growing dahlias in containers. I have a few and yes it is easier to lift the tubers, and prolong the growing season if you bring them in on cold nights. The staking in trickier on taller ones and it will limit their size some. Herre's one I have in a pot - Minnesota

Thanks Al. That's a nice one. Sure you didn't make that bug photo fuzzier in PS?? Is it a Daylily?

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Al - may I ask you what kind of digital camera you use?

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Victor - I don't think that was possible - unless I use the superMonet filter.

I had an awful batch of photos tonight Donnie(sorry I keep forgetting your name). I have an older Sony Cybershot DSC-S75. It does pretty good, except white and yellow solids.
