Well it's closing in on Sept., our summer is almost over and soon we will be in the hum-drum of winter. Lets keep those photo's coming so we have lots of color to go back and look at when there is nothing but white outside.
We came from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/757889/#top
Hope all of you had a wonderful summer and your garden memories will sustain you through the long winter months. I think along with the flowers, I will miss these guys the most.
What's Blooming Today? #11
I don't believe I have ever mentioned this before, but I am a die-hard fan of Cobra Mustangs. Shelby's to be exact.....but any Mustang will do. My mid-life crisis car will be a candy apple red Mustang convertible....i've already been looking as I near closer and closer to that age.
Sat. I went to the balloon festival but it was so windy that no balloons were allowed to go up. As I rounded a street corner headed back to my car with much disappointment I saw this on display!!!!!!
Those are lovely Pixie and I think they are some type of Forget Me Not....which we shall try not to do this winter when we think of all the beautiful flowers we enjoyed in the gardens and the many visitors that brightened our day :)
I won't forget my first 2 hummingbirds fighting over the red bee balm. I am grateful to have it in my garden :)
I won't forget my little toad friend that lived in my hanging houseplant all summer long :)
He blends so well Kim you almost don't notice him!
Beautiful gladiolas.
I don't suppose I should go out and take a photo of the Mustang sitting in the driveway that my DD and her DH are restoring, eh, pixie?
Candyce....no teasing!! LOL What color is it?? Not Candy Apple Red!!!
It was a balmy 45 degrees here this am. Brrr. Luv the butterfly ,glads and the flashy car pics. That little toad is probably not thrilled with this fall weather this early either.
The garden is also starting to look like early fall. A few pics that show the changes.
Endless Summer hydrangea is looking a lot like fall now.
I think we're giving up on Summer a bit prematurely! Though only in the 50's here tight now, it's supposed to push 90 by week's end. Hopefully that will be the last time we get that hot.
Celeste, that car must match one of your DL's!
Very nice ngam. Like that Friz fern.
Well Victor I don't miss the humidity and it is nice to open the windows for the cool air at night. There will be more HHH days you and I know, but its winding down a bit in the garden. You can see the small changes. Luv the fall color and weather, it's what comes after that doesn't put a smile on my face. It's all good in the long run and we will be thankful come next spring. :)
True on all counts. I would prefer Spring, then Fall, then Summer and finally Winter. That would work better for me. I hate Winter, though it's really only two months that really drag. You don't think about the weather until after the holidays. Then you have to deal with Jan and Feb. By March, especially now with the new Daylight Savings date, things are looking up. I think the darkness bothers me at least as much as the cold.
love the roses and the ferns too!!!! oh those glads are great!!!! I am so dumb... I wanted to tag them so I would know their colors... oh no I just cut the glads and gave it to my mom.... I guess next year !!!!!
Kassia,
We had a "the fairy" rose in a container last year, actually we planted her in 2005, she bloomed all summer 2006, but died during this last crazy winter. ;-( I think we were not meant to grow roses. Out of four climbers we planted in 2005, 2 are climbing like crazy - with very few blooms. The third looked dead but we cut it all off and it came back with one lovely rose, but the fourth was just plain DEAD. I think it doesn't get enough sun.
Don't tell me your secret if it involves anything more complicated than some yearly task!
xxx, Carrie
lol!!! oh carrie, I will post an update by the end of summer... which did what and etc.... I didn't spray much ... and let's see which roses are really the best for me... I am a lazy gardenener..... I want to be able to really enjooy more the garden....
I am going to plant the fairy in a few weeks.... or I will bring her inside the garage for the winter!
She was ok in a pot one year... last winter was just too weird for her!
x, C
ngam - love your Frizelliae fern. It's great! Where did you buy it?
Ordered it from Wayside Gardens, its the only place I found it. I got two of them, the Jap. silver fern and two of the Deer fern. They are all doing well and have gone through two winters.
Where to start......so many fun pics of the jazzy car and the frizzy fern.......both favorites of mine today... Ngam....what a lovely group of pics!
Victor - I agree with your assessment of why winter is a drag...I think it has so much to do with the short days! We gardeners like the sun!!!
....more heliopsis in my stone wall garden.....this means the end of summer is really close. Just behind the heliopsis are the closed bottle gentian almost ready to bloom....
Looks good DB. Mine are doing well too. I have tall ones - about 7 ft high. Jazzy and frizzy are made for each other.
Thanks, ngam. I may have to give in and order it from them.
I agree with Victor and DB - the early dark days are so depressing! Makes it feel winter will go on forever.
I'll look for it elsewhere first. I'm no fan of Wayside. (I call it Stayawayside.)
I dislike them, too. Their customer service was far from friendly or helpful.
Ya I agree, I have had mixed results from them. Could only find it there so made a small fern order.
Also agree about the short days of winter, at least the clocks wait till Nov. this year. My heliopsis was about 7' tall too, 'Lemon Queen'. I think a squirrel tried climbing it and bent a few of the smaller stems, then next day a couple more. Finally the large center stem got wacked either from the strong winds that day or the critters or both. It is still flowering, but is a medium sized shrub now. :)
They only gave us an extra week of daylight savings in the Fall. A month in the Spring.
You will be happy to know that the car is an ugly shade of silver-grey primer right now. It's seriously just in the beginning stages of restoration. I think it's a '67, although I am not sure.
My DDH used to work with Carrol (I think that's his first name. I always called him 'Mr.') Shelby 'waaaaay back in the early 70s. He worked just for a few hours every night after his regular (Active Army) job, and for the absolute fun and honor of it, for about a year. Then we got transferred to Arizona.
So, Victor - When does Daylight Savings time end this fall? I think I want to go to it year around.........
Candyce - those 60's mustangs bring back a lot of fun memories for me!! :)
Me too. Nov 4th.
Victor.........thanks.........I think I'll make the most of it until then.......just think.....Halloween trick or treating in sunlight.......interesting concept.....
