A not so great shot of my large JM in front of my house.

I just ordered some fall blooming crocus and cyclamen(does anyone have that?). I have 2 mums white and yellow. I have 3 maples and a cherry tree that have really nice fall color.
Deb, do you like your burning bush?
One of these days I'll get a pic to post of my backyard, it's a huge blank slate. I want to plant so many things, every time someone mentions something, I'm like" oh yeah I want that too" lol

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Jen - the burning bush was here when we moved in, and since then the maple has grown so much, that the BB is in a lot of shade, so it doesn't get that bright red any more. But it did host baby robins this year. but yes I like it.

Plainfield, NJ(Zone 6b)

Canyce
I saw some yellow/brown leaves on the ground under my Katsura yesterday too. Sent a wave of sadness along with a bolt of excitement. Although the tree starts shedding way too early for my taste, it does turn a brilliant golden yellow in the fall and emits a lovely fragrance (cotton candy?) as well. I'll try to capture a photo this year.

Almost as much as the colors of fall, I love the SMELLS! Mums remind me of my childhood, the slight odor of decay is pleasant to me, I plant marigold alsmot exclusively so I can sniff them during fall clan up and the the crisp air seems to have it's own special invigorating scent.
Does anyone else remember raking their leaves into hug piles and burning them? That was such a special evening with a holiday feel. If we were lucky, we'd have some stale marshmallows left over from summer Bar-B-Qs and would be allowed to roast them in the blazing bonfire too. Damp bandanas over everyones hair gave a extra chill and watching the steam rise off everyone's heads was a giggly treat. That fire made the blisters from raking all worth it!

LadyCleo:

Oh, such memories you evoked with your post!! I remember doing the burning of the leaves, and sometimes, just sometimes, someone around the neighborhood will try to sneak in a day of burning leaves. Mostly though we have to wait for the smell of the wood stoves and furnaces being fired up!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I said in the trees & shrubs thread that I love the smell of Autumn. Leaves on the ground, etc. Wonderful.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Jen, I'm not trying to sway you either way and everyone has his / her own taste, but I don't like the Burning Bush for two reasons. Main one - it's boring the other 50 weeks that it's not red. There are many other shrubs that have great Fall color but give you more seasons of interest. Second is that they have begun to become invasive in some areas. Not sure about ours.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Victor you are right about the burning bush being a bit boring most of the year, but it came with the house. I've now been here 15 years and see no sign of invasiveness.....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's good news. I don't have any and I don't know if they're invasive around here.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Thanks Victor.
Down in GA they still burn leaves in their yards, last time we were down there saw a guy leaf blowing right next to a big huge burning pile. What would have happened if he blew some of those burning leaves and they landed on his house??

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

If I walk into the small wooded area behind my house, I can see dozens of scrufty little burning bushes. They are invasive here becuase they were not indigenous.

Looks like Jen and Dave have the night shift.

I'm definitely a night owl.

I have several heather plants that will not flower until December. I also like asters and have a tall "perennial sunflower" that flowers in November every year I have no idea of the actual name of.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Wow jjpm74 ~ do you have photos of those late-bloomers?

Stratford, CT(Zone 6b)

I might have a picture of the sunflower somewhere. The heather bushes have pink flowers on them and bloom from December-February.

This is the type of heather I planted:

They are low growing and very hardy to zone 4. They are a nice blanket of green through 3 seasons then really show their stuff when everything else in the garden is dead.

Here's a picture of the aster. The monarch butterflies love them.

This is a really old and really poor photo of the sunflower. I've since trained it into a shrub with some pruning and tying back. I'll get some better photos this year:

Victor you really have a lot going on in that yard! Fantastic!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Dawn. So why I am I never satisfied with it???

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I don't know Victor, do you want to tell me about your childhood?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

jjpm74, do you know the name of your aster? I have not seen one so upright and strong. Very pretty.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Dave, it started when I was Jung...

*groan*

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No, that came later, Candyce.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

It's nice to hear that, Victor.

*smile*

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

So I'm not seeing many Fall color pics at all here - other than my own!! What gives???

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I'm afraid, dear Victor, that for MY photos, you will have to wait until Fall actually arrives. I wasn't much of an outdoor-take-pictures-of-the-plants type of person before I came to DG!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Okay, you get a pass, C!! That's just one more good thing you have gotten from DG. But what about everyone else?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I am sooooo gonna cheat here! LOL

So I take it those are not all on your bountiful acres, Celeste??

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Not all of them just 2 actually, all were taken in Maine and some very close to my house. The first photo, top right is on my land, the beach and lake photo's are across the street, and the big tree is about 1/4 of a mile up the road in a graveyard.
The second set of photos , the 2 in the middle are mine. Pumpkin and the tree is off my back deck.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice. First one is Sumac I assume. Did you plant it?

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Oh, Pixie, that is such a lovely place to be anytime of the year!!

Victor - First clue to the lack of fall photos............IT AIN'T FALL YET!!!!
Has your therapist hinted about delayed gratification as being something to strive for??????
And look how you made Pixie cheat......She may need therapy for that........IT'S STILL SUMMER AND I'M NOT WANTING IT TO END!!!!!!!!!!!! But.........your fall shots have been really pretty..... But you tell him, Candyce!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

DB - bigger clue - the pics were supposed to be from previous years!!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Uh OH......I'm being blonde again..........Sorry! Gulp :(

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Victor, I did not plant the sumac......it's everywhere!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It's nice Celeste. One of my favorite plants for Fall color.

Last year looking off my back deck.
