New Forum for Passifloras

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Mysharona, your vines are HUMUNGOUS down there in FL... make my look pathetic lol. I'm just happy if they cover a 4ft trellis! Your's are gorgeous!

Oh yeah!

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

Sure if we can also discuss how it is a "weed" for me that will not stop!! LOL

(just like MGs)

Fortunate to some, plagued by others ;)

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

We could discuss a control program, IF we had a passiflora forum ;) I guess we're all geographically challenged in some way. (grass is always greener) What kind is trying to take over, daisyavenue?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I love them too and have bought 3 this summer but know if I plant them my husband will have a fit for in 2 years I will be begging him to help me dig them out and pull off their tentacles for all over my other plants. They just go nuts here.

Last year, on the side of my house I planted a weird hybrid with huge leaves that I found at the San Francisco Arboretum. It has taken off and gone over the fence. I am dreading the day when I see it start to climb over my neighbor's roof. On my side it is covering everything in its path. I want to see just 1 flower before I yank it. Not having learned my lesson, a few weeks ago I bought a weird hybrid from the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden! But this one has small dainty leaves. LOL

Here is P. Donna Brigham that I found growing in Berkeley last year. It had also gone across the entire front of this building. This is the side shot.

PS I meant to start my post with........is there a control program for these? LOL Kind of like trying to hold a few dozen wiggling snakes.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oh, MY! Kell that is beautiful, looks like hot pink! I get some weed killer from the county extension office. It's supposed to be used for killing noxious weeds in pastures... I think it's just super conscentrated round-up... (mix a little with water, goes a long way)... anyway I use it on trumpet vine, which is invasive in my yard, but I let it climb on a fence to help shade my hosta and pretend I'm living compatably with it (lol). Still every year I'm out there trying keep it under control, so I feel your pain at keeping a vine under control. Could you plant them in big pots like I do? You wouldn't have to lug them in for winter.. Why do you buy more when you fuss with the ones you have???? (just kidding) I understand.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

If I knew why I keep buying plants in general, maybe I could be cured!! I see, I want, I have to have. My husband says my brain is stuck at plants and just keep repeating over and over. Also I have some sort of memory problem for when I am away from my yard, I remember it as being huge with great gaping holes needing to be filled. Then I come home and I am so shocked to see a dumpy overcrowded nursery style yard. So depressing! My reality is rarely as much fun as my fantasy world.

Here most do not die in winter which is the main problem. I was visiting another Daver a few weeks ago who lives not far from me and saw a few invasive vines in her yard looking so well behaved. I had long ago had to yank them from my yard. Her secret was that she gets just enough frost in the winter to kill them to the ground and then they come back in spring. So she only gets 1 season's growth which is so manageable. I had not realized till then what a plus that could be. I am by the San Francisco Bay so I get much less frost.

Donna Brigham is hot pink!

Kell - Your PV is gorgeous! I love the hot pink color!
Aunt B - Thank you! I love the vine, but she will be getting a trim this year. I've got tons of fruit now.

Taken today.

I'm green with envy! For me passion vines are grown in a hanging basket and never really get out of hand they only get to be outside about 3 months. The closest hardy plant that would behave like the passis do for y'all would be a Virgina creeper- no beautiful flowers but bronze leaves in the fall and little berries.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Joelle, If you have a south window, you could try one in a pot. I grew one in a pot with a 4-ft trellis, inside during winter for a couple years, it didn't get huge but it bloomed for me off and on all winter. It was fun to have the blooms at Christmastime. Just a few off and on, and it's so refreshing when you are tired of the cold grey and longing for some color. Donna Brigham, I need that one! It reminds me of Molissima(sp)-(banana passionvine) anyway it's light pink... but now I need both... I mean want :) Yes, wiggling snakes, Kell. If I just didn't like all flowers! lol Wish I didn't have to work or sleep. But a passy forum would be great. If not, we'll just have to take over the vines and climbers forum, right Chris? lol

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

Mine is strictly volunteer- no idea what it is but it is pretty and my daughter likes the fruit. It is in the trees even.

You got it B, I call for a take down. J/K :) I think if I had enought time I would be doing a tally here. Let me work on that

Flutter

21 posters to this thread so far... I'm just not sure that warrants a new forum. Could ya'll continue to use the Vines forum for now?

dave

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

:( Sure Dave. No problem. ( Okay, people ... let's go over there and spread the passiflora beauty so thick, they'll ALL want to own some. Kell, Please post that hot pink Donna Brigham over on vines and climbers, it is so stunning!)

Marie, is that light pink one the banana passion? (Something about the pinks, maybe cause I don't have a pink passie) love em!

Flutter, we'll all just have to go at this from a different angle is all, keep your chin up! I know sometimes, days go by before I check in on Daves Garden forum home page, so maybe people just didn't see it. There HAS to be more than 21 people in all Dave's community that LOVE pv's and would support a dedicated forum. Goin' on over to VandC's. -Bonnie

Port Saint Lucie, FL(Zone 9b)

Okay Dave. I was going to tally other threads to shout out as I see there are a few new people talking about passis too that might not come over to this thread.

Flutter

Feel free to continue to drum up support. If there is indeed the support out there, I'd love to create the forum.

best,
dave

Aunt B do you want me to root a Lady M for you?

Dover, NJ

Ah come on Dave, what the biggie? Just make another forum!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I spoke up on a thread, in the b-fly HB forum, but I think they were deep in conversation and didn't notice my post. That's what I get for interrupting... I'll try it again. I need to know why my passi isn't blooming and I haven't seen any gulf frit cats on it!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oh, Sharon, that is so sweet of you! I did pick one up at a midnight madness sale at a nursery near here,-40% off! I really appreciate the offer, Thank You. I think Flutter is making a new post/plea on the vines and climbers forum...
Bookworm, what kind of passie do you have? Has it fruited for you before?

Elmira, NY(Zone 6a)

I would enjoy a Passiflora forum. I am just getting back into them again, after not having grown them for years. There are so many kinds.

Lakeland, FL(Zone 9b)

Ok with me but i tryed to start one last year and a lot of you voted no Paul

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

AuntB - That one I picked up at Home Depot, so I hope it's not one of those bred to withstand the cats... What a waste of time and space that would be. I also have a Lady Margaret that is beautiful, but small, and a start of another from a fellow DG'r. Since it's fall and I've seen GF's flying by lately, I hope I'll know for sure.

I didn't go to many forums last year, Paul (no time then...) - so there are probably newer folks like me that just don't know about it. I agree - I only discovered the Dave's forum after I got bored one day and decided to scout other threads than my usual stomping grounds.

B-fly and Hummingbird forum would likely have lots of interest.

Amelia Island, FL(Zone 9a)

Hey Paul - here's the latest booty from Lady M!

Are the Fruit soft or Semi Soft?

Amelia Island, FL(Zone 9a)

We had some high winds yesterday and it blew some off that (I'm sure) weren't ready. Most of them are semi-soft.

Lakeland, FL(Zone 9b)

the semi soft ones will have good seeds

Port Saint Lucie, FL(Zone 9b)

MySHarona, you got D-mail from acrossed the state

Amelia Island, FL(Zone 9a)

Thanks Paul! I'll let you know what happens!

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Count me in - I am just learning about passies and I would love to learn more :-)

Bessemer, AL(Zone 8b)

this forum is a great idea

Port Saint Lucie, FL(Zone 9b)

This is what I wanted to look at Dave. On the vines thread, out of the last 99 threads (not posts), 35 of them are about passifloras and most of those are fairly large ongoing threads. 1/3 of our vine forum strating threads is passi's. There is no way I am counting how many posts percentage is in there :)

Great Idea..would love a passi forum!!

Liz....that is a beauty. Jo

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Thats a pretty one Liz! Incense, maybe? We are requesting a forum specifically for Passiflora, but we need more DG'ers to help. If you know any DG'ers that haven't already posted that they would like a forum dedicated to passion vines, Please d-mail them to come over here and express their interest... Thank You!!
