New pop ups for thumnails?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I like the dark background but the difference in delay between clicking the pic vs. clicking the post # is huge. Same with closing and going back.

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

I love the new pics...they seem really clearer or something,
also like the new info when you click on the member name...neat idea!

Yes, I have only tried it on Firefox and an old version of the Mozilla browser.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

I normally use IE and went to check what a pic looks like with FF........it's the same on both for me.....I get the black "see-through" framing around the pic and it doesn't take any longer to load than they did before the change.

I agree with you. Perhaps it's because I am on dial-up, but it takes no longer for me now to be able to view a photo than it did last week. It takes roughly the amount of time that folding a load of laundry takes! LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have a high-speed cable connection - typically 5 - 10 Mps and the new way is MUCH slower.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Dave. What do you do in your spare time? do you have spare time? lol

Valinda, CA(Zone 10a)

For me, the time to display has to do with the size of the image. Tall images take a very long time.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Uuuhhhgg...I feel for you, Candyce!! If it took that long to load a pic on my pc, I would not have the patience to be on the net at all! I do like my DSL......just can't (or won't) afford cable.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

define slooooow.

It's not really THAT bad. But I live out in the sticks where I am surprised we even have phone service. In order to get even a weak cell phone signal, we have to go outside and hug the flagpole - but not during a thunderstorm! LOL

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

No, not during a thunderstorm! LOL I bet you have peace and quiet where you live though.......I don't have that.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

We are in the sticks and have pretty good phone service. I like it that I can be way back in the woods and still be able to make a call, or not have to crawl a half mile to get service.
The quiet is worth it....if you call the call of the wild quiet. It gets pretty noisy out there.

We're in a rural area and when we moved here we couldn't get cable or DSL. A friend clued us in to a local company offering wireless service and it's been great. There are people setting up their own wi-fi networks with friends and neighbors (you just need at least one techie) and some communities are offering it as well. It's worth looking into from time to time. It was several months here before we found it and we nagged the cable and phone companies all the time, too.

Dave, someone else mentioned it, but the photos seem to be sharper than usual. Really like the new goodies.

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

Thanks for the new technology, Dave, but I like the big pictures better being nearly blind as a bat. Thanks for telling me how to enlarge it.
Martha

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I like the brief profile popping up, but I'm not so sure I like it on the photos. The effect is really pretty and slick, but the photos take long enough to load, even on cable, that I watch the wait indicator go though two or three times before the image appears; by contrast, the page with the photo in it used to open almost instantaneously.

One the photo is open, I find I must scroll to view the entire photo a lot of the time, and, like Dovey and a few others here, I miss seeing the post's content displayed right next to the photo. I guess I'll get into the habit of clicking on the post number rather than the thumbnail.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Just for a point of reference....we recently signed for ATT-Uverse. I have wireless dsl situated in the den where the tv is.....I am probably about 30-35 feet from it. The pictures and/or the text load in 2-3 seconds. We are in a suburb of Dallas Texas and they have brought fibre optics to the house but not INTO the house. My pc is winxp and is over 4 years old.....ancient for electronics I am told. (I will have it until it breaks). Have upgraded the ram myself.....very easy... to 756. I talk as though I understand any of this....not. So many variables to each of our pc's and connections. Please understand I am not fussing about anything or anyone.....just something to consider.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

I don't like the black box.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Dave, I have noticed a change in speed from the first time I saw this feature yesterday morning to now. It MIGHT be our connection speed - it varies, of course - but it's usually pretty fast. FWIW

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

I think it's kinda cool that you can continue with reading the following posts, if you look real closely, through the gray overshadow, while the pic loads.

Gladwin, MI(Zone 5a)

No dish for me yet. I heard they are not working too well here. I can live with no tv, I can still live with dial-up. Less speed, less frustrations.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

We've Dish, but even experienced people doesn't recommend it here in our area. Cable is next option for us. I can't wait until the day, I don't have to run 10 errands while download/upload any file by my dial-up connection.

So. Puget Sound, WA(Zone 8b)

Sorry Dave, but this is your first innovation I just can't seem to get friendly with. I achieved a much more satisfactory result with just Shift/Clicking on the photos. ie., being able to continue reading while the photo is open.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I am finding I am looking at less photos since this was installed. I just don't understand what we gained by changing it. I am on DSL and it definately is slower to pull up the pics, it isn't the bars. It is irritating to have to scroll up or down to close the pic so I can go to the next post. The pics were always clear to me, and the blacked background is distracting.
My two cents....bring back the normal format.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I'm having problem enlarging the thumbnail's pics. Please, the old format works fine - even on my turtle-dail-up.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Could there at least be a note saying to click the photo to close it? That would at least let people know they don't have to scroll down to the "close" link or the X.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

If you want to look at things the old way, just click on the post #, that'll open it up just like it always used to.

North Augusta, ON

I am on DSL and find the picture takes the exact same time to load, and it is a much clearer picture as well. I also like the convenience of just clicking the picture to close it instead of having to hit the back button.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I agree, I'm also on DSL here and I've noticed no difference in the speed of picture loading (if anything, I think it's faster because it doesn't have to load a whole new page along with the picture). Granted everything moves faster on DSL which would make it harder to notice a difference, but since I've seen everyone posting that the pics loaded slowly I've really been paying close attention, and it is definitely not slower for me. I can't think of why the new way of doing the pics would run slower than the old way on dialup when it runs the same speed on DSL, but who knows! I also really like the new feature.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I agree, ecrane.

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

I much preferred the new feature and I did NOT have to click on the X to close the picture, I could either click anywhere on the pic or on the thread in the background...oh well, looks like he's changed it back now anyway :-(
.
I'd also like to know why some had the darkened background and some didn't? Mine just looked like the normal thread in the background.

So. Puget Sound, WA(Zone 8b)

I'm zipping along now... back to shift/click popping right open. Everything is much faster.

Necedah, WI(Zone 4b)

Uh oh, all the new stuff is gone now. Did it get voted down? I liked it.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Dave disabled it for the moment at least to test whether the new stuff was causing the slowdowns that some people are experiencing. We'll see what happens--I hope there's a way to make it work without slowing things down for people.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Drat! I liked all the new stuff. I hope it comes back.

North Augusta, ON

Me too.........

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I thought I'd give it a few days to sink in and become habit, but I still found myself distracted by it instead of enjoying it. I am on a laptop with a 1024x768 display and had to scroll up and down to see the whole photo in the pop-up, whereas most were wholly visible if opened in a new tab or window.

DG users who don't come to this thread might not realize any of the work-arounds mentioned here, like clicking anywhere in the enlarged photo, clicking the post number link, etc. It might be a good idea to send a Dmail to people when enhancements are made so they know what they are and how they work.

I hope I don't sound too critical, Dave; I've loved every other enhancement, just didn't care for this one. It looks slick and attractive, but using it was kind of frustrating.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

I found out it had been disabled after I had typed a long post and then clicked on a picture. Lost the whole thing. :)

Anyway, I liked the new feature and hope it comes back.

I'm viewing on a laptop as well, gardenwife. There are a few pictures I've had to scroll - but not enough to make it a chore.

I wonder if these larger ones are pics being sent full sized and not reduced to 800 - the recommendation I have seen Dave mention before? It would be interesting to know. I know DG applies a certain bit of reduction automatically, but I don't believe it is very much. At any rate, the clarity of the pop-up photos *seemed* much better and I hope Dave can strike a balance. It's a shame a lot of people suffered slow-downs and I hope a balance can be struck that will please everyone.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Glad I found this thread! I noticed the pop-up thing yesterday and really liked it. Today, I see it's gone. Oh well.

I'm with kaperc - hope a balance can be struck to please everyone. Sure liked that feature though .....
