Gardening videos

San Benito, TX(Zone 9b)

Brillant Dave, they all work fine for me. Wonderful addition to your site. Thank you.

Quoting:
will there be some time limit on these video submissions?

Not per se, but I think less than 5 minutes is ideal.

Quoting:
Will they be available to all before any pre-screening by you guys?

No, I think pre-screening will always be important for us to do, for obvious reasons.

Quoting:
Will there be video ads at some point? Thanks.

Not unless enough people specifically want them. We have no plans to have those kinds of ads. It might happen that some gardening companies might want to contribute videos to us, but they would need to be informational and instructional with a minimum of "plugs".

How about viewers? Anyone, or only paid subscribers?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Great. Happy on all three counts - thanks!

Anyone can view them right now. We might make some or all subscriber-only if enough people really want that change to be made.

Dave you did a super job, those are great instruction videos.
Thank you for adding another dimension to DG.

I suggest ones for a)pruning, b)transplanting shrubs or trees, c) vegetative propagation, d) grafting. I'll certainly think of lots more. You can do lots on individual plants, like you did for the maters.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'd REALLY like to see one where you tell the whole DG story - from concept to today. How it's grown so much, how you handle conflicts, problems, etc.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

There are numerous sites where you can post videos for free. I'm not sure I want my mug out there on the WWW for any and all to view. Maybe others feel differently, but I'd feel more secure within DG with only members viewing videos, not sure I'd feel quite as safe with public access. Maybe you could give the option of public vs member viewing?

Don't mean to make your life more complicated but thought I would express my thoughts on this.

Finger Lakes, NY(Zone 6a)

I use Mozilla Foxfire and all the videos ran fine for me; in fact I enjoyed them. Great idea!

I hope to see others added.

If the videos are kept to topics directly related to gardening and forum subjects then there really shouldn't be anything really personal on them that couldn't be made available to non members.

Just an idea, they could become a valuable tool in that they can be used as teasers to convince more people to subscribe. i.e. being able to see 1 video and then an option to subscribe in order to view others that are listed.

West Pottsgrove, PA(Zone 6b)

You wouldn't necessarily have to put your face in a video to illustrate how you prune a certain shrub, for example. Maybe just your hands...
By the way, did anybody notice that wicked bruise on Dave's finger? Ouch!

Cochise, AZ(Zone 8b)

Will there be a little camera or something on the Watch Thread-Print-Post Reply line or somewhere so we know there is a related video?

I was wondering who would bring that up. It was an ouch indeed, and took over 2 months to go away. I'm embarrassed to say how it happened, so I won't, only to hint that it involved a power tool and some unsafe wood cutting techniques...

dave

I love the idea of the video's. Wonderful!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Hi Dave, Yankee Cat told me that you had the videos up and running and wow! She's right!! They look great. You do terrific tutorials. I watched every single one back to back.

It was great meeting you at Kassia's. Thanks for coming all the way out there to see us.

Dave - power tools (and even non-power tools) can be detrimental to your very health.

If using one for the first or second time, please have a "spotter" nearby, so that if things go wrong they can at least sound the alarm and get help on the way.

I know this probably sounds like a silly precaution, but if you are using it and it will eat you, do not take chances - please.

The life we save may not be as important to us as it is to our beloved ones. A fact "driven" home everyday in countless insurance commercials which still really make sense even though we do not want them to.

Sorry, have a good eve, take care of you, 'cause you take care of them.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

DGTV :) Thanks again - this is so fun!!

Dea - Oh perfect! I love it ...... DGTV!!! Great name!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yeah! DGTV!

North Augusta, ON

hehehe...I like how he says "installing" instead of planting....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Shows how much of a computer guy he is! I guess a transplant is a re-boot. Propagating is making version 2.0.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

LOL And grafting is opening a new window?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

A cynic might say grafting is anything Microsoft does! Hee hee.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

So, is it data dumps that cows, horses, chickens, rabbits, etc. do? ;)

Orange, CA(Zone 10a)

How cool is this? Great video and I learned something new besides. Thanks so much

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

oh Dave I love it!!!! I am dreaming of the possibilities....

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

When we have a lot of plants to go in the ground at one time, we have an "install fest"!

Shangshui, Henan, China(Zone 7b)

I just finished listening to the video 'weed'.
Not bad!
With the added new feathure, I am sure that
DG will become hotter and hotter.
Who knows? Some day you guys
Might see and hear me and mine in here.
Jianhua

Jianhua, that would be great!!

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

Talk about thick skinned! I think that tomato could've taken one of those chickens out if you'da miss fired!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

lol... you guys are killing me... I never imagined that I would apply computer language to gardening!!!!

too bad my nephew did not buy into it...he run away after he met Dave... I think I scared him when I said that Dave is a geek gardener.... or a gardener geek... either way Philip was afraid to like it.... he paid for the lawn mower with one condition... never ask him to use it!!!!!

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Sorry Shoe! After I said 'shoes', I left, and it hit me while driving down the road that there were none in the song!!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

No problem, Mel! *grin I was watching your video the other night (again!) and it really cheers me up. I'm totally grateful to ya!

And that brings up another video idea...perhaps some videos in the RoundUp forums, eh? Bringing those of us together who couldn't make the actual RoundUps!

What fun this is gonna be!

Shoe

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

Shoe as usual you come up w/the best ideas and maybe should be a separate forum?

Rock on the DG RU videos forum for those that can not attend & really wanted to.

This would be a "green" thing also.

Crossville, TN

MElody.....I watched your video the other day also....with my DGS....and told him who everyone was/is. Thanks again for it. Jo

Camilla, GA(Zone 8a)

|Where is Melody's video? Would love to see it.. This is fun..

Dave, after being computer-less for many weeks, I just got hooked up again and now have high-speed. It's wonderful to be travelling so quickly through DG, and I am able now to see your videos.

I want to thank you for the Bulbs video! I just got some Caladium and have been waiting for a couple of weeks to see some life. I even dug one up see if it had any promise because I thought surely I must have put it in upside down (I didn't...phew!). How pleased I was to see you planting Caladium, and saying that it's hard to know which way goes up! I felt less stupid to hear that it wasn't just me!

By the way, this morning I see about 1/2 inch of something peeking out of the soil.

Thanks for the new video feature...excellent idea...and you did a really good job, too! Very natural.

Warren, PA(Zone 5a)

Really enjoyed the tomato video. A nice, clear "confidence builder" for anybody who is just starting out with their tomato adventures. Well done

Buff Orpington chickens? Buff Rocks? Or just some happy poultry with that grocery store tomato orange glow?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Will video from digital camara transmit? I've a short video loaded from my camera, and with dial up will it go through?
